Regarding Smith's 'note with reference to the selection of a gentleman to fill the office of Chaplain at the Portland Convict Depôt', he writes that he must 'defer the consideration of this question, as it must necessarily be yet some considerable period before the works at the Island are sufficiently advanced for the reception of Convicts'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium, with the verso of the second leaf carrying a red wax seal (with indifferent impression), with postmarks and address by Titchfield 'To | Mr. Legge | at Messrs. Barker & Co | Chandos street | London Covent Garden'. The letter reads 'Welbeck April 19. 1829 | Mr. Legge, | I am likely to want my cabriolet so soon that I must request of you to write me word immediately on what day I may depend upon having it quite fit for use. - | Yr. Obedt. Servt. | Titchfield'.

4to, 2 pp. Bifolium, with letter on both sides of first leaf, and frank ('For Mrs Montagu at Mr Purdies in Orange Court, Bath'), with red wax seal (bust of a man), on reverse of second. 42 lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with strip of mount adhering to second leaf. Begins by describing her state of health, complaining of 'a Constant pain in my Head & Opression [sic] at my breast', for which she has been 'blooded'.

Three pages. On vellum bifolium made from skin roughly fourteen inches by twenty wide. Three official stamps. Signed twice by 'Jas M Melville', Writer to the Signet, and his partner James Lindesay ('Jas. Lindesay'), and witnessed by their clerk William Bett ('W. Bett').

Lord High Chamberlain (1782-1865). One page, quarto. Very good if somewhat grubby. Lightly folded. Reads 'My Lord/ As principal heritor in the parish of Cargill allow me to petition Your Lordship to obtain the Royal presentation to the church and parish of Cargill in the county of Perth and presbitary [sic] of Dunkeld vacant by the death of The Revd. [last word deleted in pencil and replaced by 'Mr J. F'] Bannerman, in favor of the Revd ['Mr' added in pencil] Michael Stirling of Crieff ['Minister of the Gospel' added in pencil]'. Signed 'P Burrell'.

12mo, 1 p. Fair, on aged paper. Reads 'The Duke of Portland presents his Compliments to Dr. Taylor, and has the honor to acquaint him that he will be very proud of the honor of being elected a member of the Society of Arts -'.

12mo, 30 pages. In contemporary nonce-binding of brown boards tied with twine. Presumably incomplete, as sequential translations of only thirty psalms are present, ending with the hundred-and-fourth. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and none on COPAC.

British soldier (1877-1948): Boer War; General Staff Officer, Portland Fortress, Dardanelles, Suez Canal defences, etc., during Great War. C.B.E., D.S.O. and Cavalierr of the Order of the Italian Crown. Very good though somewhat discoloured with age. Dimensions five and a half inches by three and a half. Bearing the Society's stamp. Signed (beneath stamp) 'A Ersine-Murray'. Headed 'Cantor Sections'. He has 'discovered that several typewritten pages have been omitted' from his fourth lecture ('lost in the post I expect').
