3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, creased and lightly-aged. The letter begins: 'My dear Lord Errington, | You know the difficulties I had to run through because of my loss of money. The rest of my present fortune I am not allowed to withdraw without, for one sum, a years notice, the other, 18 months, the whole sum being 5 or £6,000.' He proceeds explains the particulars of his proposal to 'deposite [sic] with A. B. [i.e. Alexander Baring] two bills of exhcange each of half the sum above mentioned'.

It begins: 'Full many a gloomy month had past, | On flagging wing, regardless by - | Unremarked by aught - save grief since last | I gazed upon thy bright blue eye, | And bade my Lyre pour forth for thee | Its strains of wildest minstrelsy!' The fourth line in the fourth stanza, 'For blessings on thy future years', has been deleted and replaced with 'To save thee from affliction's tears'.

Shall you print my prose tale do you wish it altered? or do you reject it altogether, if the latter pray let me have it again as soon as convenient'. He concludes with 'best compliments to Mrs. Watts in which Mrs. Bayly unites'.

A substantial collection of original documents in various formats (from fold-out folio pages to 12mo, but mainly foolscap 8vo) bound into two large 8vo volumes, with the material in the first volume foliated 1-435 (with an extra nine-page index at the front and additional material at the end), and that in the second volume foliated 436-626 (preceded by seven-page index).The two volumes in matching blue cloth half-bindings, with boards in lighter blue cloth. Stamped in gilt on the front of the first volume: 'Zoological Society of London | New Aquarium | Vol. 1. | 1922-25.

The story of the Johnstone family has been told in Emma Rothschild's 'Inner Life of Empires' (Princeton, 2012). According to Rothschild, Alexander Johnstone 'became a soldier in the British army and was sent to North America.
