The letter is in a secretarial hand, with Tegetmeier writing the valediction: 'Very sincerely Yours | W B Tegetmeier | C Collette Esq'. He thanks him for his 'exceedingly kind and friendly reception of me at the Club last night', and encloses 'a slip of what I wrote in the Queen, as it may interest you'. He asks to be sent a post card to confirm receipt, 'as I am not quite certain whether you have any letters sent to the Club'.

The first page, with 'Conditions' and details of publishers, is headed 'Donovan's British Quadrupeds; with coloured plates. | On the First of January will be published, | Part I. Price Nine Shillings; and Volume I. Price One Pound | Sixteen Shillings in Boards; | of | The Natural History of British Quadrupeds; | [...]'.

A substantial collection of original documents in various formats (from fold-out folio pages to 12mo, but mainly foolscap 8vo) bound into two large 8vo volumes, with the material in the first volume foliated 1-435 (with an extra nine-page index at the front and additional material at the end), and that in the second volume foliated 436-626 (preceded by seven-page index).The two volumes in matching blue cloth half-bindings, with boards in lighter blue cloth. Stamped in gilt on the front of the first volume: 'Zoological Society of London | New Aquarium | Vol. 1. | 1922-25.

1p, 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of glue from mount on the blank reverse. Reads: 'The Secretary presents his compliments to Miss Kerr and begs leave to inform her the Composition fee of £35 has been duly paid to Drummond & Co'.

3pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, on two leaves pinned together. He begins: 'I am sending herewith living specimens from Eagle Pond, Epping Forest, of a species of Volvox without protoplasmic connections between the cells. If you have not had it before you will no doubt be interested. If you have, I should be glad if you could tell me what you think it ought to be called. It is evidently close, if not identical, with V. Monona Gilb. Smith recorded by Pearsall as British from the Lake Dist. But it may also be V. tertius Meyer (cf.

1p., 12mo. With mourning border. (On his father' sdeath in October Derby had acceded to the title.) The letter reads: 'Lord Derby presents his compliments to the secretary of the Royal Zoological Society, and beign desirous of becoming a member of that body, would be much obliged to the secretary if he would inform him which steps are necessary to be taken for that object.'

3pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper with a thin strip of glue in gutter from previous mounting. Lankester complains that he has 'not received a copy of Mr. Sedgwick's translation of Claus' Handbook of Zoology'. He has 'a large number of students (annually over 60) at University College' to whom he would recommend the book if he had it. 'I should wish to be able to place it on the lecture table for them to see.' He claims that it is 'usual for publishers to enable teachers to do this kind of thing - by sending them copies of works likely to be recommended'.

On slip of paper, roughly 2.5 x 10 cm, cut from a letter for an autograph hunter. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Reads 'Yours sincerely | J Arthur Thomson'.

12mo: 1 p. Nine lines of text. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. Suggests a convenient time for a meeting 'with you, Dr. Masters and Profr. Allman.' Looks forward to hearing from the recipient, once he has 'fixed the hour and the place'.

All items are good, on lightly aged paper. The 'Report of the Auditors of the Accounts' is seven pages, octavo, stitched and unbound. It consists of five full-page tables: 'Receipts', 'Payments', 'Comparison of Receipts in 1867 and 1868', 'Comparison of Payments in 1867 and 1868' and one showing 'The Assets and Liabilities of the Society on the 31st of December 1868'. Comment by the seven auditors (all named) on final page, remarking on 'the unexampled state of prosperity of the Zoological Society at the close of the previous year'. The four handbills are each on one side of a 12mo leaf.

British zoologist (1864-1945), Secretary of the Zoological Society of London, under whose guidance Whipsnade Zoological Park was created; attached to Department of Military Intelligence during World War I, and 'chiefly responsible for the distribution of propaganda behind the German lines' (Who's Who). One page, quarto. Very good on creased and ruckled paper. Docketed and bearing Royal Society of Arts stamp. Signed 'P. Chalmers Mitchell'. He is just back from holiday and is sending an Honorary Admission to 'Mr. William Perry - your Assistant Secretary.

French-born American traveller in the interior of West Africa (1831-1903). On piece of paper roughly 4 1/2 inches by 7 inches. In good condition although somewhat grubby and creased. Reads 'Yours very truly | Paul Du Chaillu | June 26th 1901'. Letterhead, with vignette in gold, gray and blue, reading 'Au Bord | des Schnelldampfers "AUGUSTE VICTORIA" | den ........ 19 | Hamburg-Amerika Linie'.

Presenter of 1930's show on BBC radio, 'The Zoo Man'. 1 page, 12mo. Folded twice. In good condition. 'All you can do for your parrot is to paint the jaws with iodine, but I am afraid the trouble may be with the kidneys & in that case you cannot do much. | Give quite simple food, nothing fattening | Yours truly, | D. Seth-Smith "The Zoo Man". Seth-Smith's book 'The Zoo Man Speaking' was published by Thomas Nelson in 1937. In grubby stamped envelope addressed in autograph to Freakes.

Fellow of the Royal Zoological Society (1900-68); fascist; writer of thrillers; intelligence officer for MI5 who recruited Ian Fleming, Tom Driberg and Anthony Blunt; jazz drummer; friend of Aleister Crowley; said to have been the individual on whom the M of the James Bond books is based. The forwarded letter is signed 'Angus' and is on letterhead Old Rectory Ashton Northampton. All five items are in good condition, all of one page, the letters 8vo and the cards 16mo. Knight's handwriting is difficult.
