15pp., folio, on 10 leaves of laid paper. In a number of hands, with marginal glosses. In good condition, on aged paper. The conclusion reads: 'Wee will also &c that ye aforesaid Sr. Jno Foster have &c these our Letters Patent under our great Seal of England &c without fine or Freedom because before mentiond & expressed &c in Witness &c Tested at Gothamburg ye 28th. of March'. On reverse of last leaf: '17. Eliz. [i.e. 1575]. The document begins: 'The Queen to all to whom &c.

'Plato and his Dialogues' was Lowes Dickinson's last book. It was warmly received on its posthumous publication, with its contemporary relevance recognised. In a review of May 1932, the Classical Association's journal 'Greece and Rome' declared: 'Here is material for the most exciting and stimulating discussions'. The same review said of the BBC series on which the book was based: 'if all such talks could have so happy an issue, wireless might be said to have justified itself'. And in October 1932, in another BBC radio talk, Lowes Dickinson's literary executor E. M.

8pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Refers to 'Mr. Forster's disloyalty to the Liberal Party in the House of Commons and in the country in framing the provisions of his Educational Bill. [of 1870]' Scarce: no copies on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with a 2.5 cm closed tear and slight loss at one edge causing damage to one word of text. The text is neatly written out in another hand over 14 lines. Allen's signature and other details in his hand are at the end: 'Wm. Allen | Stoke Newington near London | the 11th. of the 4th month (April) 1843'. Headed 'To my dear Friends on the Continent of Europe to whom these lines may come'.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Purdie's letter: 4pp., 4to. Closely and neatly written on a bifolium, with the last page cross-written over the third. Addressed, with postmarks and red wax seal, to 'G. P. Nicholson Esqre. | Wath | nr Rotherham'.

Forster's main objection is that the National Service questionnaire, sent out by the Society of Authors 'at the suggestion of the Ministry of Labour', asks members to 'give general particulars of their political opinions' (see Hansard, 25 May 1939). Four items. ONE. Priestley's letter, addressed to 'My dear Forster' by 'J. B. Priestley'. 1 p, 4to. Twenty lines. Fair, on aged paper.

Folio, 4 pp, on one skin of vellum folded to make a bifolium. Aged, in fair condition. The certificate is boldly printed in calligraphic style, with royal crest. Printed over four pages, with the first three completed in manuscript. Signed by the Vice President, 'W. E. Forster'. With three official stamps, the last stating that 'This certificate is raised to the 1st class July 1886'. Records that Mrs Caron studied at Norwich Training College. Ten brief reports, dated and signed, by the following seven inspectors of schools: 'Frederic W H Myers', 'D J Stewart'; 'Walter Bailey' (3); 'J G C.

On the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. Leaf dimensions 38 x 22 cm. 59 lines. A small area, approximately 1.5 x 2.5 cm has been torn away, resulting in slight loss to the text, the gaps being easy to fill in ('[...] Motion b [...] | [...] It nimously [...] | [...] Mee of Opinion [...]'). The hole has been repaired on the reverse; otherwise the page is in fair condition, on lightly-aged and foxed paper.

Author and radio producer (1896-1972), 'tall, goodlooking godson of G. K. Chesterton', and friend of Aleister Crowley and E. M. Forster. Two pages, 12mo. Folded once. In good condition, with slight loss at head. A somewhat camp missive: 'My Dear Boy, | (What lovely yellow paper you use!) I am overwhelmed with disappointment - but I cannot dive on Monday. Could you possibly make it Tuesday? I should love to - and am only sorry you did feel that the other evening was a failure - and that you feel I affect you like you say. I will try not to now I know. | Lance'.

Irish-born playwright (1784-1862). On one page of a folio sheet folded to make two leaves, with the address on the reverse of second leaf "Allan Cunningham Esq / Lower Belgrave Place / Pimlico / 27". "I am much obliged to our common friend Forster [John Forster, 1812-1876, biographer of Charles Dickens] for telling me that, a few orders for Covt. Garden might not be unacceptable to you."
