MONTGOMERY

The collection is in good condition, with light signs of age and wear. ONE: Photocopied typescript of the beginning of a piece titled 'The Making of a Field Marshall', on the early career of Montgomery of Alamein. 10pp., 8vo. With a few autograph emendations. Ends abruptly. Apparently unpublished. TWO: Two black and white press photographs, each 13.5 x 19cm.

[3] + 280pp., 8vo, on the rectos only of the leaves. Bookplate of Douglas Neil Wimberley on flyleaf. Around half a dozen additional duplicated maps inserted. With copious autograph additions on upwards of 70pp. of the blank reverses of the leaves, several taking up the whole page, and a number initialled 'DW'. Internally in good condition, on aged and worn paper, in worn green fake-cloth binding, with 'SCOTTISH SOLDIER | VOLUME II | BY | DOUGLAS WIMBERLEY' in faded gilt on cover.

[5] + 145pp., 8vo. On the rectos only of 149 leaves, perfect bound into buff card covers, with white typed label on front, reading 'SCOTTISH SOLDIER VOL. VII | BY DOUGLAS WIMBERLEY.' In ten sections, lettered A to J, three of them signed 'D W' in red ink (pp.55, 78, 128), with index of names and appendix. Title-page in autograph, otherwise a duplicated typescript, but with autograph notes to pp.21, 46 (subsequently inserted), 61, 62, 63, 75. Sections include '"Montgomery", a personal Memoir', 'Broadcast on the B.B.C.

2pp., 8vo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. She apologises for not being able to be 'helpful on any of your questions'. She does not even possess a copy of her own 'Designing and Making Stage Costume'. 'I have no Motley designs at all, as every one which was in my possession has been sold to the University of Illinois, who have taken the whole collection of about 3000 swatches.' She is glad to hear that he has some of them, 'as it means that there are a few still in this country'.

Booklet, 44pp., 12mo, paper wraps, red with phot of the author on front, some marking top of front cover, mainly good condition. INSCRIBE by author on title: "With kind regards | from the Author | M. Montgomery".Scarce; four copies listed on WorldCat (the two major Irish libraries, NLS and Oxford).

The material in this collection is all typewritten, and originally formed part of 4to leaves. It is in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Holbrook Jackson cut it into 31 strips, each roughly 13 x 20.5 cm, and wrote an original aphorism on the blank reverse of each strip.

The background to the collection is simply stated. On the death of the 15th Earl of Glencairn in 1796 the title became dormant. It was claimed by Fergusson (praised by Boswell but dismissed by Johnson as 'a vile Whig' and derided by Burns as 'aith-detesting chaste Kilkerran') as heir of the line of the 10th Earl. Fergusson's claim was opposed by Sir Walter Montgomery Cunningham of Corshill, as presumed heir male along with Lady Henriet Don, sister of the 15th Earl, and wife of Sir Alexander Don of Newton Don, Roxburghshire.

3pp., 12mo. On bifolium. 50 lines. On aged and creased paper, with glue from mounting in album on reverse of second leaf, which carries the address. The letter begins: 'What think you of the Bazaar for a title for your new work.

Dimensions roughly 48cm square, folding four times to dimensions 24 x 9cm, with 'M. OF A.' printed in blue ink diagonally across front. An unusual piece of Monty memorabilia. Found among Anthony Brett-James's papers.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed, with broken seal in black wax, on verso of second leaf, to 'James Montgomery Esqr'. 80 lines of text. He has been twice that day to Montgomery's Sheffield mansion the Mount 'to enquire about you - the first time in vain, and the second nearly so. There they are much as heretofore - but Miss Sarah meaning to write sermons you may have it before this.' Roberts declares: 'I think the present great Lions of the town are myself and mad dogs - perhaps you may think that they might be included under one head - yes - if that head was yours!

One page, 12mo, good condition. He thanks him for his letter, and expresses mutual enjoyment of Brett-James's stay. The latter can consult his files whenever he wants. He goes on I am interested to hear that the Encyclopedia Americana have commissioned you to write a number of short biographical articles. It may be worth menttioning that you can find a number of sidelights on Jack Dill, some of them rather important, in my Memoirs [underlined] - also at least one on 'Pug' Ismay.

Folio, 4 pp. Bifolium. On laid paper watermarked with the date 1800. Worn and aged, with small closed tear to second leaf, but with text clear and complete. Ownership inscription on first page of 'Thos. Adam Esqr | Alnwick Northumberland'. The respondents' case, signed in type by William Alexander and Robert Montgomery, is laid out in detail in small print over three pages.

Text on 87 pp of a 8vo 1944 'Surrey Desk Diary' (Mitcham: Surrey Manufacturing Co.). Text clear and complete. Volume in good condition on aged paper. While the author's ownership signature at the front of the volume ('', ', '') is not decipherable, there are clues to his identity: his birthday is on 24 June, he states on 5 October that he is in the 23rd Armoured Brigade, and on 19 August he gives his Identity Card No. as 116941. He begins as a sergeant, and by 13 January is 'H.Q. Troop commander, which, out of action, no schemes, no censoring, doesn't amount to much'.

The letter (8vo, 1 p) is foxed, but otherwise very good. Had he not been 'engaged for ten days past to dine three or four miles off with an old acquaintance', whom it is too late to disappoint, he would have been happy to avail himself of the kind invitation. Sends best wishes and prayers to the recipient's family, 'from the elder to the youngest'.

Four pages, 12mo. Good, on aged paper with one half-inch closed tear. Claims to be 'compiling an historic book [...] which has been left to the nation', and asks for his contribution. Provides a full-page list from the 'over 500 Autographs'. The collection 'could not be complete without' Montgomery's 'honoured name'. Asks for 'a few words (as many others have done) on the blank side so as to keep this for Gen Alexander & others who took part in your campaign'. Congratulates him on his 'brilliant Victory'.

12mo: iv + 132 pp. Unbound. In original red printed wraps. Stapled. A poor copy of a scarce item (COPAC only lists copies at the British Library and National Library of Scotland). Dog-eared and grubby, with wraps faded and with loss to extremities and spine repaired with tape. Staples rusted and worn through prelims. Text complete and entirely legible. Five essays: 'Chatterton and the Rowley Poems', 'Macpherson's Poems of Ossian', 'The Shakspeare Forgery', 'Psalmanazar and the Formosa Imposture' and 'Bentley and the Epistles of Phalaris'.
