1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He is enclosing an invitation (and puts the word in inverted commas) for the New English Art Club, and gives the date of the 'sending in day'. The New English Art Club was founded in London in 1885 as an alternate venue to the Royal Academy by young English artists returning from Paris.

Printed in two columns on one side of a 45 x 28 cm piece of wove paper. Text complete, on aged and creased paper with wear to extremities. Docketed on reverse in a contemporary hand, and with four minor manuscript emendations. The heading reads: 'PLYMOUTH | TOWN COUNCIL. | The following spirited and luminous Lettere on the management of the Municipal Affairs of this Town having appeared in the Conservative Paper of Wednesday last, several of the Burgesses have it re-printed for the general information of the Rate-Payers: -'.

On one side of 11 x 15.5 cm piece of paper. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An interesting and unusual artefact of Devon social history. Reads: 'Messrs. Roberts & Carter, | To the Crier of Barum [the Latin name for Barnstaple] | 1835 | July 3rd Posting Bills, for sale of Rookebeare Estate 1s. 0d. | Crying do. 1s 0d | Augst 27th. Posting Bills for sale of Pinney Estate &c 2s 0d | Duryard 2s 0d | [total] 4s 0d' Bater's acknowledgment at foot reads: '28 August 1835 Recd the above | W Bater'.

1p., landscape 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. With manuscript note of receipt. Robieson grants permission to reprint, adding 'There is no need for me specially to obtain the writer's permission, he will I am sure be only too glad to see his letter get extra publicity.' The carbon of Griggs's letter is stapled to Robieson's. It is dated 16 February 1950, explains that the letter, from 'County Planning Officer', published on 7 February, 'referred to a paper recently read to this Society on "Are Town Planners Planning Too Far Ahead?"'

The diary is 66pp., 4to. In red buckram binding with 'Diary Oct-Dec 1907 Plowden Wardlaw' in gilt on spine. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in good tight binding. Plowden Wardlaw's devoutness is apparent throughout. For example, on 17 October, he appears to be consecrating his own private chapel: 'At home to-day. Most of the day was spent in cleaning and preparing the Chapel for the dedication tomorrow. Father Maturin the former <?> father, who received Edith into the Church in 1898 came down by the 5.40. I met him in the motor. He is a gentleman, & a man of the world.

With frontispiece ('LCC: Ossulston Street Area, Saint Pancras') and 35 plates ('Drawings'), including five fold-outs, two of which are coloured maps of parts of London (one begin 'Suggestion for Re-development of part of Chelsea'). Also included are two maps of the Brady Street Area of Bethnal Green. In fair condition, on aged paper, in worn and aged wraps. Stamps and label of the Board of Education Reference Library.

Three cards (bifoliums), 15 x 12.5cm, 11.5 x 18cm, 10 x 12.5, inscribed by Lamb either below image on front or on inside blanks. Images, two b & w, one faintly purple background, presumably by him, are: Madonna and child (inscribed page[3] "With love from | Henry Lamb"); Carol Singers (inside "Best wishes from | Henry Lamb") ; children and teenagers playing cards (under image on front "With love to you both | from | Henry Lam.| Xmas/48"). 1p., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with slight discoloration and repair on reverse. Giving his address as 'Cary Tuttyt, Charlotte Town, Prince Edwards Island, B. N. A.' With black rectangular stamp: 'RECEIVED IN | 29 AUG. 1846 | MILY. DEPARTMENT.' Docketted on reverse 'Does not appear to have enlisted 1839'.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. 54 lines of text. Good, on lightly-aged and worn paper. Addressed to 'The Hon. T. L. Graham, M.L.C., Prime Minister's Office, Cape Town.' Taylor begins by thanking Graham for his 'courteous letter' and is pleased to find that he has not been misunderstood. 'While siding with Dr. Smart it was on purely personal grounds that I wrote you. I cannot say that a number of your constituents differ from you; I do not know.

[1] + 7pp., foolscap 8vo. On eight leaves, stapled together in one corner. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with slight rust marking to title leaf. The title leaf reads: 'THE MAGDALEN STREET | PROJECT | Further information obtainable from: | THE CIVIC TRUST | 79 BUCKINGHAM PALACE ROAD | LONDON S.W.1. | TATe Gallery 0891'. The background to the experiment is explained in the first two paragraphs: 'This is the story of an experiment in civic design. It is also a story of civic co-operation in which self-help was seen to be synonymous with public spirit.

3pp., foolscap 8vo. 60 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Bifolium. Addressed, with broken red wax seal, to 'C. J. Auret Esqe. | Secretary | Board of Public Roads | Cape Division | Cape Town'. Napier understands that no tender has been received 'for putting in repair the Cross Road leading from Mr. place, to Mr. Henry Dreyer's Bridge on the Constantia Road & from the Bridge to the foot of the Hill leading to Wynberg'. It is 'very evident' to Napier 'that if some means are not immediately taken, that the heavy rains we may expect this winter will render the same totally impassable'.'s?>

As Chorley is described in his entry in the Oxford DNB as a 'conservationist' with a 'deep attachment to and lifelong concern for the English countryside', it is a surprise that no mention is made of the matter to which this collection relates, which created some public interest at the time and involved a landmark legal action. The first item in this collection - a copy of typed letter from Chorley to the Clerk to the Hendon Rural District Council on 24 October 1932 - sets the scene neatly.

2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged laid paper. Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth [James Carmichael Smyth (1742-1821) of the Middlesex Hospital]'. Smyth's son (the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth) is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come out a Passanger [sic] in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings, upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'.

Landscape 12mo. 12 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper, in envelope addressed by Lamb to Inglis. On 'seeing the picture after that long interval' he was 'not ashamed of it', but 'when it was new my friends used to rag me about my "Morgue" pictures', there being 'a few others of similar gruesome import'. Now that he is 'far past youth' he is 'painting mostly scenes of sweetness & serenity'. He is sorry that she is 'denied the priviledge [sic] I have enjoyed all these sinister times', that of being able to paint.

4to, 1 p. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with chipping and closed tears to extremities. Specifically addressed to the 'District Committee for Ward 6. Comprising the Oakley Square and Ossulston Districts'. Summoning the recipient to the town hall, to deal with an 'Agenda' of six numbered points. Facsimile of the signature of Barrett, who is styled 'Honorary Secretary to the Central Executive Committee.' No copy on COPAC or in the British Library.

4to, 166 pp. In ruled 'University Exercise Book'. Text clear and complete. On lightly aged paper, tight, in shaky binding with worn boards. The identity of the diarist is unclear. Her husband is named 'Berten', and their are references to 'Minie' (daughter?) and 'Kate' (South African sister-in-law?). A loosely air mail letter may provide a clue to the identity of the diary's author. Dated 30 April 1962, it is written by P. J. Duncan of Newlands to Miss Ruth Ince-Jones (diarist's daughter) of Geneva, Switzerland.

One page. On one side of a piece of watermarked, laid paper, 18 x 11.5 cm, with the reverse blank. On aged paper with slight loss to left-hand margin and slight stain beneath text at foot of page. Laid down on a leaf removed from an album.

All items good, on aged paper, with Lady Rose-Innes' letter in its envelope. Bower and Rose-Innes had worked together when the former was Imperial secretary to the High Commissioners for Southern Africa at the time of the Jameson Raid. Rose-Innes three letters are dated 17 October 1935 (12mo, 4 pp), 9 July 1936 (12mo, 4 pp) and 13 April 1939 (12mo, 4 pp). All are closely and neatly written. In the first letter Rose-Innes describes a journey 'through the S.

16mo (leaf dimensions 11 x 9 cm), 2 pp. Bifolium. Reverse of second leaf addressed by Rogers 'For the Rt. Honl. Sir Robert Peel.' Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged and creased paper, with a couple of spots of glue on second leaf from previous mounting on second leaf. Rogers writes 'to point out to Sir Robert Peel a slight inaccuracy in the printed forms respecting the Income Tax' ('middle of the third page of Schedule D'): the words 'sitting up' instead of 'setting up'.

4to, 2 pp. Thirty-nine lines of text. Clear and complete. Neatly and closely written. Begins by discussing two books recommended by Bower: Otto Hammann's 'World Policy of Germany' and a work by Sir Francis Younghusband. Hammann's book 'confirms what Sir Sidney Lee writes about the Kaiser's telegram'; he is pleased that Younghusband's, which he has not yet read, contradicts the story that 'Lord Ripon was prepared for such drastic measures'. He has been 'correcting the proofs of the 600-page history of South Africa which I undertook to write for Longmans Green five or six years ago'.

Dimensions of print sixteen inches by eleven inches wide. Mounted on piece of irregular shaped card. 'J. D. H.' in bottom left-hand corner and Cattermole's monogram on barrow in bottom right. Good, with a little light spotting and aging, except for seven and a half inch closed cut from right margin around half an inch from the foot of the print. An attractive bustling street scene, suitable for framing. Original folio version, from John Parker Lawson's 'Scotland Delineated in a Series of Views' (London 1847-1854).

Manuscript note by Harold Sidney Harmsworth (later Viscount Rothermere) at head of first page: 'When Em [pet name for Cecil Harmsworth] had a long talk with the Prince of Wales - I being detained in the H of Commons | [signed] H'. 8vo, 8 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Good, on lightly-aged paper with slight rust to staples. Fair, on aged and lightly-creased paper. On pp. 4 and 5 brief details are given of the subjects of the eight films shown: 'Port Sunlight', 'Bournville', 'A Bit of Thameside', 'Letchworth', 'Hampstead Garden Suburb', 'Well Hall', 'Gretna' and 'War Seal Homes'.

The seven items are all 8vo, and bound together in a contemporary dark green calf half-binding with 'JUNTA DE PLANIFICACION DE PUERTO RICO' in gilt on spine. Very good and tight, on aged paper with a little light foxing. Binding with wear to hinges and outer edges. Containing four fold-out maps and one fold-out table. ONE: Titled in English 'Government of Puerto Rico. Third Annual Report of the Puerto Rico Planning, Urbanizing and Zoning Board Submitted to the Governor of Puerto Rico. Fiscal Year 1944-45'. Laurence A201. 12mo: 15 pp. Stapled eight-leaf pamphlet. Very good, with a little rusting to staples, and in slightly grubby covers. Attractively printed. Note beneath title: 'This is a verbatim report with only trivial corrections of an impromptu speech at a luncheon given by Mr. Eric Macfadyen on October 30th, 1930, at the Savoy Hotel, on behalf of the building fund of the Settlement. It is thought that it would be interesting to have Mr. Shaw's words just as he delivered them without any attempt at rearrangement or revision.' Loosely inserted are a printed donation and bequeathal slips.

On a piece of yellow paper, 18 x 23.5 cm, removed from an autograph album. Dimensions of image 12.5 x 17.5 cm, neatly enclosed within a border. Good, on aged paper discoloured at extremities of margin. An accurate and detailed drawing of the organ in its setting on the balcony, with ceiling above and the surrounding steps, columns and alcoves.

Made up of four sepia photographs, each roughly 7 cm square, laid down overlapping each other to make a strip of 7 x 27 cm. Somewhat faded (especially to the right of the image) and with one small stain, and a one cm closed tear to the left. The paper on which the panorama is laid down, which is captioned in a contemporary hand, is somewhat grubby and chipped.

One page, quarto. On aged and lightly creased paper. He is sending the signature with 'one or two others'. 'Possibly the work I have done for South Africa (I have been upholding the Imperial cause for a quarter of a century) is your reason for paying me the compliment.' Thinks he recognises from Freeman-Matthews' crest that he is 'a descendant of the Llandaff Mathews family'.

One page, 12mo. Very good on lightly aged paper. 'It gives me much pleasure to add my autograph to your collection.' With a 38-line biographical cutting on Fiske.

'Although I am surprised at your wishing to include mine in your collection of autographs, here it is. | I agree with Sir Alfred Milner that Work, Brains & Opportunity are necessary to success; and that the last is most necessary.
