12mo, 1 p. In good condition. Laid down on a page removed from an album. Addressed to 'Rev. and Dear Sir', and calling the recipient's attention to an 'enclosed appeal' (not present), and asking that he 'would kindly put it up in your Church'. 'It speaks for iself and I can only add that the efficiency of the opposition to the disastrous change of law must greatly depend on the means at the disposal of those who are contending for an old domestic purity.'

One page, 4to, good condition. She doesn't disapprove of any kind of collecting and is ahppy to send her signature. She adds I collect all sorts of odds & {?] from which she gets much satisfaction. She describes a bangle made up of about 60 sixpences given to her by a celebrity.each with the name of the celebrity on it. She stopped adding to it because it became too heavy/ Her eldest girl collects stamps her second autographs and youngest tea spoons.

Three pages, 12mo, good condition. "By all means let the subject be [Insi?] the Gipsy. On after-consideration, I was afraid the other subject would be too crowded. I long to see your study from nature; rememebring your beautiful design of 'Mein Vogel'." She goes on to discuss his son's illness and her brother concern.

16mo, 4 pp. Disbound bifolium. Text clear and complete, but in poor condition. Vignette after last item. Gives text of 'Opening Hymn. Daventry. L. M.', 'Alter Prayer. Salem. S.M.', 'After Sermon. Children's Hymn.', 'After Collection. Duetto. - Fawcett.' and 'After Benediction.' Aged, worn and creased, with loss to margins. BBTI has Brougham operating in Burslem between 1828 and 1851 as 'Printer, Bookseller, Bookbinder, Music seller, Librarian/owner of circulating library, Stationer.'

On both sides of card, 9 x 11.5 cm. 16 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged card. Gives dates when they will be in Curzon Street. 'I do hope that we shall find you better. My little red book [possibly a pamphlet printed for private circulation, containing recollections of Gladstone] seems to satisfy everybody, which is an immense pleasure to me'. The book and photograph have delighted 'Agnes Jones' sister', and she has 'letters from Mr Gladstone & Mr Rathbone, & a leader - not a mere review - in the Manchester Guardian'.

Folding card, making four pages. 12mo. Page 1, commences with the pledge ("Realizing that 'votes for women' is the most urgent and vital reform of today and must take precedence of any further social legislation because . . . ", reasons given followed by an undertaking to put Woman's Suffrage first in voting and spaces for a signature and address. Page 2, postal address on what would form a postcard.

Novelist (1770-1844)(DNB). One page, 4to, bifoliate (blank except for Williams' name and address), some marking but text clear and complete. "I am much pleased with the design inclosed but have to observe that I think the tall boy a little too tall and that his trousers have more the look of a young sailor than those of e gentleman - the farmer boy is excellent - the lake scene very prettty and the whole satisfactory. I had great pleasure in naming you as an artist of great promise to Mr Newman who does a great deal of business & is a very worthy man and good judge of art . . . N.B.

Novelist. Two pages, 4to, chatting about personal matters and a MS. by a Mr Bligh which Rosamund Lehmann and C. Day Lewis wish to recommend for publication. [A note added to the letter in Goerge's [?] hand says that the book was published by Secker & Warburg.] She looks forward to the end of the War, concluding with impromtu verse: "I want to climb a steeple/ I want to ring the bell,/So I can tell the people/I love them all so well".

Novelist. 4pp., 8vo and 4to, edges sl. fire and water damaged, no significant loss. She responds to an invitation to give a talk. She likes the suggested theme of Mistakes many of us Novelists make". She then gives thanks for hospitality at talk. Three items,

16mo (leaf dimensions 13 x 10 cm), 3 pp. Bifolium. Twenty-eight lines. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly creased paper with small closed tear in margin (not affecting text). He has been asked by 'Miss Caulfield' to 'perform the ceremony of "introduction" with a view to your publishing (if you approved of it) a work she has lately written [...] <"Janet de Rinzy?">'.

Card, c. 10 x 8cm, good condition. Text: "For the Suffrage Bazaar | Israel Zangwill". On the reverse a printed biography of Zangwill is laid down (cutting) obscuring a phrase written there, starting "For the Manchester & Distri [ rest obscured".

Printed Card, c.4 x 2.5", with manuscript additions in Mrs Craik's hand. She gives the day and month, and time, then adds details about trains and Cabs.

One page, c.20 x 33cms, 7 stanzas (with part of the refrain), mounted alongside a print of a head and shoulders view of Eliza Cook, c.12 x 15". Cook has adjusted her "Stanzas of the Seasons" ("Poetical Works" (Chandos Classics, 1870), p.204, including change the title, omission of first stanza, repeat of a key stanza, and changes to the order. The mount for both items measures, c. 46 x 52cms.

Four pages, 16mo, inc. address page, one chip and some staining marginally affecting text. She is happy to accept his invitation, and accepts it on behalf of her daughter and Mr Romilly [her son-in-law]. "Mr E. Romilly feels some scruple at accepting an invitation which it is possible urgent business in the house [Parliament] would prevent him from waiting on you." In a postscript she reminds him that he has offered his support in the ballot at the Athenaeum on the following Monday.

Irregularly-shaped (like an 'L') piece of paper, cut from the head of a letter with a mourning border. Dimensions (very roughly) 4 and 3 cm high and 7 cm wide. Good, with minor traces of two tissue mounts adhering to reverse. The following written vertically across three lines of writing: 'to all your family, & I am, dear Sir, truly yours | [signed] H. Martineau'. The remains of the three lines acoss which the above is written read: '<...> dear Sir | <...> I am | <....> ur sister <...>'.

4to: 2 pp. 26 lines. On lightly discoloured and spotted paper. She will be happy 'to send you word occasionally of any work or other matter concerning myself which might interest your readers'. Her 'new book', 'Enticement', 'has just been published by Leonard Parsons. At present I have not commenced another.' She has just returned from North Africa, 'where I motored over 3,000 miles in Algeria & Tunisia. On the strength of this I do not contemplate writing a "Sheik" story! We met no sheiks.

Signature, on paper cut from page with black (mourning) border.c.3.5 x 2".

Novelist. The two surviving pages, 4to, from a lengthy letter which has already been crudely repaired but which has an additional tear which does not, however, lead to textual loss. "I was very much rejoiced at the sight of your truly welcome letter" except that it announced a death. She eulogises the departed "He was one of the few of whom you may know little yet think much . . ." She explains how she had planned to visit her within a more complicated trip but "all my plans were laid aside and certainly my pleasures annihilated by an attack of inflammation in the eyes.

The society's letterhead has a circular engraving, 1 1/2 inches in diameter, of Jesus and a fallen woman, surrounded by the quotation ':JESUS SAID UNTO HER, NEITHER DO I CONDEMN THEE: GO, AND SIN NO MORE.' It describes the Society as 'Being "THE LONDON FEMALE PENITENTIARY," founded at Pentonville, 1807, and "THE GUARDIAN SOCIETY," founded 1812, for the RESCUE, RECLAMATION, and PROTECTION of BETRAYED and FALLEN WOMEN from all parts of the United Kingdom, and now united under one management." 1 page, 8vo. Grubby, with staple marks and a closed tear affecting two words of text.

Novelist and philanthropist. Mrs Milner Gibson, wife of the statesman, Thomas Milner Gibson, was a society hostess of note (see DNB). 2pp., 8vo. She says "It is very cruel to pounce upon those just arrived but [?] the Tale of our poor gentlemen the belongs most to be pitied perhaps of all sufferers. I take advantage of hearing that you are expected in London to beg of you to help us next week. We remember well all you did for us on a former occasion".

American children's author, etc. One page, 8vo, good condition. "I beg to enclose my subscription to 'The Poetry Journal' for 1916."

Novelist. One page, 8vo, minor defects, text clear and complete. She explians her tardy response ot his letter by saying she was abroad. She acknowledges familiarity with the works of Calverley but "I am ashamed to admit that when I wrote "The Road that Bends" [pubd 1916] = some ten years ago, I did not remember that one quotation came from his "First Love"." She thanks him for the "connection".

Novelist (1810-1865). Signature removed from album, c. 3 x 1.5", , clear and attractive text as follows: "Yours very truly / E.C. Gaskell // Plymouth Grove." Thie album from which it was removed contained letters and clipped signatures, some of which had been provided by Sir David Brewster, scientist (see DNB), a relative of the collector. I can find no evidence that Brewster corresponded with Gaskell, but Mrs Gordon's biography of Brewster reveals that they met on at least one occasion.

Of Norwich, labouring-class poetess (1767-1839). Some of her work reprinted in "Women Romantic Poets, 1785-1832. An Anthology", ed. Breen. Piece of paper, c.7 x 6", discoloured and marke, chipped and small tears on fold marks, text clear and complete, 18 lines, rhyming couplets, some as follows: "To Miss Drake and Miss E. Drake. / Dear honour'd ladies, this address excuse, / The grateful tribute of my humble muse; / Ye in whose minds each Grace her charm displays, / And infant Virtue sheds her early rays. . . .

Pianist and composer (1847-1925). She has sent her correspondent a card (invitation) to a concert she is organising on behalf of the Church of St Augustine. She says she has made every effort to make it a success, and has persuaded all the artistes to give their services (free).

One page, 4to, grubby, small pieces torn out with loss of two words and the "B" of the Bath address. "Some person having (I suppose with a view to turn my Novel into ridicule) circulated a great many Printed Letters of which I <?> one; I beg the favor[sic] of you to get the advertisement on the other side inserted in the Sun, which will be of more effect than the Bath [? prob. local paper.] / I am sorry to be so often troublesome to you [?.] I hope however you will have the goodness to excuse and am . . ." Verso has address and a note by bookseller, "Mr[s] Mathew".

Novelist. Four pages, 8vo, good condition. She responds to a question by revealing that she is working on a new novel called "Scarlet Sials" (pub. 1924, BLC) "all about the Isle of Wight and a rather fascinating love intrigue and social tragedy". She says it's "full of the sea . . . (Solent, Spithead) and the drifts of orange flower scented air form the Lotus Island, and is a great delight to write in the midst of fogs & General Elections". She mentions the Redwing Yacht Club ("cherry-coloured sails") but is torn from them by her being a speaker at election meetings ("blue" - Tory).

Schoolmistress, of Mangnall's "Questions" (1769-1820). Two statements of account to a Miss Jefferson, listing in Mangnall's copperplate, charges for education under Mangnall., both one page, 4to, faint foxing, hole in middle (spiked?) one had 2" tear not affecting text. Charges given (1814/5) include "Board" £8.13.3, "Reading, English Grammar use of Books" £0.10.9, "Writing, Arithmetic use of pens and Ink" £0.13.3, "Geography and use of the Globes £0.16.0 . . . haircutting 1/-. . .washing, French, School Books, French Books/ Christmas Perquisites".

Victorian novelist (Mrs Henry Reeves). Docketed 'Authoress of "Coming thro' the Rye"'. Signed 'Helen Reeves' and docketed 'nee Mathers'. Closing two lines of letter above signature, and on reverse five lines (referring to "the dreadful time of yours", partly covered by glued-on piece of paper. Creased and discoloured.

Victorian novelist and satirist of the Raj. 'Dear Madam | I regret that I shall be away from England all winter | Yours truly | F. A. Steel." Creased, disoloured and docketed in pencil. Writing offset by folding of letter.
