[1] + 28pp., 4to. New title-leaf and text pp.215-242. In printed brown paper wraps, inscribed at head of front cover 'to Mr Richard Bentley | from Michael Sadleir | Dec 1924'. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. The paper was read before the Bibliographical Society on 17 November 1924. NOte: Sadleir describes the wonderful moment when he first saw the Bentley file copy collection in "Nineteenth-Century Fiction". He inevitably became very friendly. Richard Bentley was the grandson of the founder of the firm, selling up to MACMILLAN'S IN 1898.

[10] + 288pp., 4to. In original quarter-binding, with blue paper boards and cream buckram spine with gilt lettering. A handsome book, profusely illustrated, with 49 plates (some with guards) and the two signed 'Extra Plates', and numerous illustrations in text. Announcement on reverse of first page: 'THIS edition, with an original etching and an original lithograph by Frank Brangwyn, is limited to 65 copies, of which this is No. 41'. The etching, facing p.1, is titled 'A Back Street, Tours', and the lithograph, facing page 180, is titled 'Newcastle'. Both are signed by Brangwyn in pencil.

On a piece of paper, roughly 14 x 12 cm. Creased, and with a few pin holes (not affecting text). Edges untidily cut. Possibly the ffep of a presented book. Text in purple ink, with good firm signature (roughly 4.5 cm long). Reads 'To my very dear Friend | E. Bawden | [signed] Lionel Ellis | Siena May 1926'. The '6' in the date slightly cropped.

Harper (1863-1943) was a writer and charming 'pen-artist'. His 'The Hardy country: literary landmarks of the Wessex novels' was published by A. and C. Black in 1904 and reprinted in 1911 and 1925. Quarto scrapbook of approximately fifty leaves. Leather half-binding in poor condition, worn and with much loss to spine. Internally very good, with minor spotting and discoloration. The cuttings, from newspapers as diverse as the Weymouth Telegraph and the New York Post, are mostly laid down, with several on slips of the Author's Clippings Bureau.

One page, 12mo. Good, if a little aged and lightly creased. He apologises for the delay in 'sending the drawing that now I ask you to please me by accepting' (not present). He asks her to accept it as a present for 'that almost superannuated festivity' of Christmas. 'I send you a coat-of-arms as that includes a certain amount of letterpress which you will I think prefer to a simple drawing'. He has delivered all the drawings bought by Mrs Samuel's friend and has received his thanks.' Signed 'E. T. Rees'.

English artist and illustrator (1820-1912). Swain (1820-1909) was a noted wood-engraver, and the letter concerns his possible employment by Macquoid. Two pages, 12mo. Good, but on discoloured paper, heavily sunned along one edge and browning in one corner, with small closed tear at top of fold. Swain's price 'for Blocks will do - £8. 8. 0 for full page & £6. 6. 0 for front page -'. He has seen Williams 'who was very polite & promised me some work'. Williams is 'going to be married soon - wh: he said wd. "come in the way" of drawings at present'. Signed Thos. R. Macquoid'.

Parkinson received the degree of Master of Arts from Oriel College, Oxford, but took up art and drew the cartoons for Judy magazine, 1890-96. One page, 12mo. Very good if a tad grubby. Folded once. Attractive illustration, roughly two inches square, in top left-hand corner, showing the head and shoulders of a 'Gibson girl' type beauty, in dress with leg o'mutton sleeves, looking over her left shoulder. Clearly responding to request for autograph, the text reads 'Most willingly | Yours faithfully | Wm Parkinson. | Aug 5. 1900. | "Dearhurst" | Streatham | London. S.W.'

Twenty illustrations, each roughly four inches square and each with its own caption, on a sheet of paper roughly forty-four inches by eight and a half inches, folded into a booklet four and a half inches square, in original printed blue paper wraps. Extremely scarce. No copy on COPAC. Frail, on discoloured brittle paper, creased and with several closed tears. A charming account, timed between 5 a.m.

Children's writer, poet and illustrator. All three items one page, quarto. All in good condition, with minimal staining. All three docketed, and the two letters signed 'Dorothy AH. Mills. F.R.S.A.' LETTER ONE: She enjoyed a 'magnificent' item by F. T. Blanchard in the Society's magazine 'immensely': 'it contained what it seems to me we have lost in England, in the appreciation of Letters, - namely, spirituality and idealism, and the Divine plan in the life of the individual.

English illustrator (1876-1953), best-known for his work in 'Punch'. One page, 12mo. Very good. Folded once, and with one closed tear in crease. 'Many thanks for the good wishes and the horse shoe'. Signed 'Frank Reynolds'. Docketed in ink on reverse.
