On one side of a strip of vellum (circa 40 x 18 cm). In fair condition, aged and worn. In English. Scan of part on application

50pp. used, 41 x 16cm, poor condition, surviving front cover (title "High Sheriff's Book") detached, gatherings partly detached. Most in Latin. One page only (November 1721) interpreted by scholar seems to be a record of the civil cases (names, dates, etc.) coming before the Sheriff, almost all concerning debt of relatively minor claims of damages.

On 4to bifolium, with the account of charges on the recto of the first page, and Brewster's letter on the recto of the second. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed, with Nottingham and Derby postmarks, on the reverse of the second leaf, to 'John Goodall Esq | Solr. | Derby'. Docketted: 'Brewster Jno. | Under Shff of Nttm | with acct. of Charges in Grammer at Melbourne | Same at Hides'. The letter reads 'Inclosed I forward you the Account of Charges relating to these

1p., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed, with postmark, on reverse of second leaf, which is docketed 'Mr A. Lang | About dividend from John Brydens funds'. In good condition, on aged and lightly creased paper. The letter reads: 'Gentlemen, | Mr. Lang has just now received your letter of yesterday's date. - Bryden's funds are not yet drawn from the Bank, and the dividends cannot be paid sooner than the latter end of next week, as Mr. L. goes from home on Sunday and will not return till that time. - You will get notice what time to send for Mr. James Brydons [sic] dividd.'

An abridged abstract of this item, by 'Mr. Tallack', appeared in the Social Science Review, N.S. Vol.2 (July-December 1864), pp.421-422, but the present full version of the address, as delivered, is unpublished. 3pp., foolscap 8vo. On three leaves of laid Britannia paper by Conqueror of London. Held together with a brass stud, and with the last leaf laid down on a page removed from an album. With a few manuscript corrections. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The address is written in a vivid but not entirely coherent style, and begins: 'I have been invited by the Secretary, G. H.

Both items in good condition, dusty on lightly-aged paper. ONE: Headed 'Little Ryle June the 12 1732 | an account of what my plate come two that I take with me from ye house'. Docketed on the reverse: 'Account of Plate and other Things taken from Little Ryle to Acton in 1732. by Elizabeth Collingwood'. 1p., folio. Twenty-one items, beginning with 'for my Coffie pote fourteen pound ten shillings' and ending with 'for six brickfast [sic] plates of nine shillings | in all eight pounds eleven shillings'.?>

1p., landscape 12mo. On creased and aged paper. The name of the recipient is not given. In reply to his letter 'I acquaint you that my return to Parliament for the Borough of Armagh is dated the 15th of December 1832 and that I have not been a Member of Parliament prior to the above period'.

On roll of vellum approximately 21 cm wide and 195 cm long. Neatly written in chancery hand, with approximately ten lines to every 10 cm length. The top part torn away, otherwise good, on aged vellum. The placename Westby is mentioned, which is found in both Lincolnshire and Lancashire, but on the other hand the document also refers to justiciars in Kent and at Westminster. An important clue may be that Sir John Blagrave and Sir Edward Yate are both listed as 'nuper vic' - presumably 'late sheriff'. The two men were High Sheriffs of Berkshire in 1624 and 1628 respectively.

Folio, 2 pp. 38 lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair, on browned high-acidity paper, with slight chipping to extremities and slight internal wear.To be folded into packet. Docketed 'Recd 22d. October 1855 | [initialed signature] | Doorga Churm Curr - | - v - | Ob Mullick | Letter from Mr Fisher -'. Difficult hand. He acknowledges to various documents relating to the case, as well as 'two Bank of Bengal notes', in a writ of Fieri Facias. Explains his requirements ('I must have one man with me to Gard [sic] my property').

Each of the two typescripts is on one side of a piece of A4 paper. One is signed in type at end 'T. B.S.' and the other (which appears to be mimeographed) carries what is presumably Simpson's signature at head in the manuscript note: 'From T. B. SIMPSON | 11/6/49.' Text of each clear and complete, on creased and aged paper. Apart from the typed signature to the one copy, and the fact that one copy has square brackets and the other curved, the two texts are identical.

4to bifolium: 3 pp. Good, on lightly aged laid paper, with slight damage to second leaf caused by the breaking of the red wax seal, parts of which still adhere. Address, with black ink Salisbury postmark, on verso of second leaf. The 58 lines of text clear and entire. A chatty, spirited and interesting letter, casting valuable light on the doings of the better class of Hampshire society in Jane Austen's time. Addressing 'My Dear Mr. Jervoise' she begins by explaining that she 'wrote in such a hurry yesterday to save the Post, that I can scarcely know what I said'.

All items 4to, 1 p. All on aged paper: the first and last good; the second lightly creased and with the ink having eaten away at a few words, and some chipping at foot, affecting signature (partially repaired with archival tape), but with text clear and entire. All three bearing the Society's stamp and the first two docketed. Concerning his desire to become a member of the Society. In the second (autograph) letter he inquires whether 'any one from Bombay may be nominated for Membership of your Society by the Council in case he has no friends of his who are Members of your Society'.
