On 18 x 8 cm piece of paper, tipped-in on a leaf removed from an album. In good condition, lightly aged. Reads: '24.1.06. | Dear Sir; | We have no mummies to sell. You should apply to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. | Ys faithfully | E A Wallis Budge. | C. D. Sherborn, Esq.' Budge had been Keeper since 1894. Sherborn is best-remembered for his 'Index Animalium', 'an 11 volume, 9,000 page work that catalogued the 444,000 names of every living and extinct animal discovered between 1758 and 1850'.

343pp., 8vo, with sixteen-page publishers' catalogue at rear. Frontispiece and six full-page illustrations (one for each story). In blue cloth, with decorations in gilt on boards, and gilt titles on spine, all edges gilt, and attractive patterned endpapers. In fair condition, on aged paper, rebacked. Inscription on reverse of frontispiece reads: 'To Mary Charnock, | from the Author, | Mrs Rhoda E. White, | with every kindest wish.

20pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Scarce: only two copies on OCLC WorldCat.

1p., 16mo. On recto of first leaf of bifolium; second leaf attached to card, which carries notes in a Victorian hand. In good condition, lightly aged, but with thin strip cut away at top, presumably carrying details of place of writing. He is sending 'Mr L<?>'s sheets for the Printer', together with the title page, 'which however should not I think be printed off till we see whether he is to add any new matter - as that should be stated'. After stating that he has cut out a diagram, he concludes: 'I have not yet got any proofs'.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In very good condition. Covering the whole of the front page is a beautiful coloured illustration of the Imperial State Crown, with no text. The following three pages are printed in black and purple, with the second page carrying the publication details; the third page a full-page note from the editor; and the last page an advertisement for Sir John Wilson's 'Royal Philatelic Collection'. No copies of this item traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He thanks him for his reply to his 'plea for assistance in connexion with the possible publication by a foreign press of my history of Plague'. He had 'no intention' in writing 'of soliciting any financial aid from the Society, because any such solicitation would have been an impertinence on my part.' He would need £20,000 to have the book 'privately printed by one of the smaller English presses, such as Messrs.

2pp., 8vo. Handbill with drophead title. Dated at end 'Cambridge, March 1. | F. D. MAURICE.' In good condition, lightly-aged, disbound. No copy traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. 'His gentleness was always a lenitive and an example in such a raving jungle as Fleet Street. He will be badly missed everywhere by everybody.' He concludes by lamenting that as he is leaving for Italy the following day, the present letter will have to be his 'only tribute, alas. But I hope you will read into it a lot of things difficult to write.'

Only the prelims of the book are present, on four leaves. In fair condition, on aged paper, with slight damage at the margin of the first leaf. Orioli's two inscriptions are on the two central leaves. Comprising a leaf with series title ('The Lungarno Series No. 12'); leaf with half-title and limitation (no 5 of 300) on reverse, signed 'G. Orioli'; title leaf; and contents leaf. The inscription on the title reads: 'This is for Barbara and Raphael | with love and affection | from Pino [Orioli] | Florence day of publication'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He has 'desired Longman to send you half-a dozen copies of the magazine'. Conway can 'either sent them as they are, or cut your own article out'. Froude would prefer the first option, '& will of course bear the expense & the Postage'. The letter ends with Froude making a dinner invitation.

48 + [4]pp., 8vo. Stapled. In green printed wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Divided into ten chapters, including 'Royal Air Force Tests used in the Present Investigation' and 'Types of Respiration, and the Respiratory Apparatus in Men and Women'. An interesting document: the Royal Air Force only having been in existence for six years. With stamp, shelfmark and label of the Board of Education Reference Library. Four copies on COPAC, and uncommon.

[10] + 244 + [2]pp., 8vo, consisting of sixteen loose signatures, unstitched and unbound, wrapped in a piece of green paper on which is written in pencil 'Group 2 | Special'. Very good, on lightly-aged 'Holbein' wove paper. Each signature with uncut edges, and with only the first four of the eight leaves opened.

8vo booklet of four leaves, containing eight specimen pages (119, 497, 375, 499, 551, 716, 718, 850), all illustrateed. Stitched and stabbed, in blue printed wraps. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The cover of the wrap carries the illustrated title, with the date 'Sept. 1. 1839.' in small print at the foot; the reverse carries the first six parts of the 'Sketch of Contents', which continues with parts seven to nine on the reverse of the back wrap (paginated 3).

3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He has been reading Wortham's biography ('Gordon: An Intimate Portrait', published in the same year) and asks whether he might be interested in 'a book which was published in 1885 by my mother's uncle, a Mr. Samuel Mossman. I believe he died about forty years ago, and lived in Liverpool.

1p., 4to. On bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'H. G. Watson Esqr. | 13 St. Andrew's Square | Edinburgh', with three postmarks, and docketted 'Lawers | Military College 9 June 1845. | Tradesmens Bills'. In good condition, on aged and worn paper, with a few closed tears. The signature is illegible, but does not appear to be that of the Governor, General Sir George Scovell.

The four items total 21pp., foolscap 8vo, on 21 leaves. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Comprising the four final chapters of Notley's account, each separately stapled and paginated: Chapter IV (26 October to 4 November), 6pp.; Chapter V (4 to 9 November), 4pp.; Chapter VI (9 to 17 November), 4pp.; Chapter VII (18 to 27 November), 7pp. For more information on Notley, see the appreciative obituary in The Times, 3 September 1962, and the letter by 'C. F. T.' in the same newspaper two days later.

13pp., foolscap 8vo, each on a separate leaf. Compliments slip printed in blue. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Headed 'TRANSCRIBED FROM A TELEDIPHONE RECORDING'.

These items not only constitute survivals from one of the leading Lancashire textile manufacturers, in an era when the industry in that area was world-renowned, but also of what was considered to be one of the very best of the north of England's celebrated working men's colleges. A total of 507pp., 4to., in four folders. In addition to Frank Mallalieu's meticulous course notes, diagrams and calculations (with occasional tutors' markings), the contents include 99pp. of mimeographed course notes and 47 swatches of material.

1p., 12mo. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, laid down on a grey paper backing. Addressed to 'My dear Macmillan. He begins by asking: 'Could you do anything in this matter?' He considers 'Mr. McMahon's Edition of Aristotle's Metaphysics a highly creditable & conscientious work'. In a postscript he gives his opinion that 'The Letters [...] will fill rather more space than the Sermon'. According to the Oxford DNB, Maurice was the firm's 'first truly prolific author', and was referred to by Alexander Macmillan as 'their prophet'.

Both items good, on lightly-aged paper. LETTER: 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In envelope, with stamp and postmarks, addressed to Baron at 48 Griffin Street, Wilton, Blackburn. He writes that he has 'been trying in vain to find the Nineteenth Century containing my essay - The Pound of Flesh'. He is 'pretty sure - but not absolutely - that it was in the number for May 1880'. The 'paper' is 'much more completely given' in his book 'The Wandering Jew', and he is enclosing a copy of a programme with an advertisement for the latter and another of his books, 'Demonology'.

[v] + 135pp., folio. With diagrams and plans in text, and one large fold-out diagram of '100 Ton Waste Paper Cleaning System'. A well-produced item, well-typed and with clear diagrams, bound in navy buckram with 'REPORT ON AMERICAN VISIT | 1954' on the spine. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The text is preceded by an Index, a map of North America, and an itinerary. The 'objects of the visit' are given on the first page as '(a) To obtain information on the current production practice in Woodpulp and Paperboard Mills.

4 pp, 12mo. Bifolium. 89 lines. Text clear and complete. She begins by apologising for the delay in sending an autograph: 'In atonement I give you Anthony Trollope's signature, which perhaps you have not got.' Reports that they 'went to the Italian lakes this summer. We aimed at Venice but gave it up because of the cholera.' She regrets that the recipient's 'friends book & chart do not prosper. Mr Bowes (the Macmillan of the shop) thought the chart a good plan and likely to succeed, except that the size would be against it'.

3 pp, 12mo. 41 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper with a couple of closed tears. He is sending 'the trans. of the Baghobahan together with the Original', and trusts that Robinson will keep his promise 'and not detain it long'. Considers it fair that Robinson's friend 'should pay the carriage thereof from & to London'. 'The younger Stewart is to send me up a book of mine in about a week - the best way will be to send the Bagh along with it as it will be the same expence'. Suggest sending another book with 'the Bagh to Haileybury', rather than to Portman Square.

3 pp, folio. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Supporting the application of 'Surgeon [Charles] Lowdell, Officiating Agency Surgeon Baghelkhund, [sic] applying for the Acting Appointment of Medical Officer in Charge Bhopal Battalion in the event of a vacancy occurring in October next'. Lowdell is holding his current post while Surgeon Goldsmith is on furlough, and on his return will be without an appointment. 'His duties in connection with the special charge of the young Maharaja have been difficult and have required the exercise of tact and patience.

Both letters 1 p, folio. Texts clear and complete. Fair on aged paper worn at extremities. In the first letter he informs him that 'his name has been entered in the register of candidates selected for appointment in the Opium Department, but that the Lieutenant Governor cannot hold out to him any home [sic] of an early appointment'. The second informs Pagose that it is 'quite impossible to say when it may come to your turn to get an appointment in the Opium Department as vacancies in it are not of frequent occurrence and the number of candidates is large'.

On both sides of a piece of paper 25.5 x 41 cm. 44 lines. Fair, on aged paper. The upper part of the first page laid down on card, resulting in loss of text. Begins 'I am of opinion that no partnership was created between Mr. H. D. Kingdon & Mr. Newman by the Indenture of 1838 sufficient to bar the former on an action upon that deed.' The document dates from the year in which Cockburn took silk. H. D. Kingdon was author of 'The Old English Mastiff' (London, 1873).

The collection, consisting of 31 items in a variety of formats, is in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with all texts clear and complete. Wellby's correspondence with Rogers (an affluent Kent businessman and farmer, collector and dabbler in the jewellery business) reflects a relationship at once businesslike and friendly, with items being offered by Wellby on behalf of his firm, and news of items consigned to the firm by Rogers. The personal element is apparent from the first.

Possibly a presentation to Radcliffe and his wife. 4to photograph album, in heavily-worn leather binding, all edges gilt, lacking clasp and spine, containing a total of 113 photographs, including 108 albumen cartes-de-visite, each print approximately 9 x 5.5 cm, and each laid down on a gilt-edged card mount roughly 10.5 x 6 cm. The large majority of the photographs are in excellent condition, with some carrying a small pinhole at the head (obscured by their mounts). Three pages of the album carry minor damage, otherwise good and tight internally. Almost all from the studio of Alfred D.
