NORWAY

Three items, all typed. In good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Covering note, probably by Peskett. 1p., 12mo. Headed 'Ribbentrop's Speech on the Occupation of Norway 1940'. Beneath the heading is an eight-line quotation from Low's 'Years of Wrath', followed by: 'The document herewith, issued by the German Foreign Office, is the Italian ambassador's copy of a number issued to those present on the occasion of Ribbentrop's speech to the Heads of Foreign Missions and members of the German and foreign press in Berlin in 1940.

9pp., foolscap 8vo. Duplicated carbon, printed in purple (except for Item 27, added in black), with the type breaking up heavily at points. Listing 92 numbered items, with columns for 'Departmental Serial No.' and 'Priority', the latter marked up in red pencil with 'A' (top priority), 'B' and 'C'. The list is divided into the following subsections: 'Hull & Miscellaneous', 'Auxiliary Machinery & Gunmountings', 'Electrical', 'First Fitting Stores'. The document was presumably produced as part of an assessment of whether the ship should be saved or scrapped.

20pp., small 4to (16.5 x 13 cm). Sewn in card wraps, illustrated in colours. In fair condition, lightly and spotted, in worn wraps, with two uncoloured illustrations on the inside wraps coloured in. With ownership inscription on half-title, dated 18 September 1927. Eight attractive full-page colour illustrations (two out of register) in text, in a range of styles, suggesting stock images by different illustrators, and two uncoloured illustrations on the inside wraps, coloured in (by a child?), with another two illustrations on the front and back covers. This item is something of a mystery.

Both items in good condition, in worn wraps, on lightly-aged paper. The two journals give bright, pleasant accounts of the two trips. The author appears to be a British woman, whose husband is named Sidney. FIRST JOURNAL: 60pp., small 4to. Two pencil drawings. In 'Baberton spiral note book'. Two items (a guide to Tromsø Domkirke and a receipt) loosely inserted. The first entry reads: 'Arrived Bergen 1600 1/2 late owing to fog on way over. Also fairly choppy towards end of crossing. Oil trouble with ar so went to a Garage directed by young man who squeezed in amongst luggage.

8vo, [vi] + 36 pp. In original blue printed wraps. Text clear and complete. Aged, and with staple hole to top inner corner; in worn wraps. Stamp on front wrap of the 'Education Department Library', with red 'Education Department. Reference Library.' label on back wrap. Pp. 5-23 give a 'General Plan of Education in Girls' Schools in Scandinavia' (in eleven subsections) and discuss 'The Education of Girls after the End of the Ordinary School Course'. Also included are 'Philanthropic Schools' for 'Deaf Mutes' and 'Deformed and Crippled Children and Adults'.

Hf.lea, worn, raised bands, red lea., gt spine, title as above, some foxing and damage in parts, mainly good. Contents (listed on front endpaper in Abel Heywood's hand): "Four Days in Iceland"*, "A mountain walk in Norway"*, Scandanavian Stories about Huldre"*, " Notes on Japan and the Japanese"*, "Sveningdael"*, "Trout-fishing in Norway", "Fish out of Water", "A Night at the Lochinvar", "One Way to the Tweed", "A Fishing Adventure in Japan" [not listed in Contents], "The Vision of Fishes", "Fishes Ee-Seet", "Norway Re-visited".

Nachez's letter: 12mo, 3 pp. Good, on aged and lightly-ruckled paper. He is keeping his promise and sending the 'autograph of Lord Randolph Churchill, which I found in Norway during my last journey to the midnight sun'. He explains that 'Lord Randolph must have signed his name by his own hand into the Strangers list', because of the 'different handwriting of his private secretary Mr. Wm. Trafford'. 'The slip of paper is out of a book at the Hotel in Trondjhem.' The slip from the hotel register is roughly 8 x 27 cm, with six signatures on each side, including those of 'Dow.

Hubert Smith was a man of many parts: local historian, town clerk of Bridgnorth, Shropshire; author of a book which combines a mountaineering interest with a gipsy interest ("Tent Life with English Gipsies in Norway"); linguist; etc. He was also a passionate pursuer of information about the Guitar and guitar music at a time when the instrument was not popular. [Smith kept autograph copies of all his correspondence.] Letter , 3 pages, 8vo, soiled but clear and complete. He thanks them for the latest payment of royalties on "Tent Life".
