A nice collection of souvenirs of a very exciting and interesting tour. The West Indies did very well indeed, beating England in the test series 3-1. ONE: The signatures on four pieces of paper, laid down on green 8vo paper backing, with card carrying maroon and black logo of 'West Indies | 1963 | England'. All in good condition, lightly-aged. First, signature of 'G Sobers' written across 22.5 x 11.5 cm magazine photograph of Sobers at the crease. Second, signature of 'W Hall' across 8 x 5 cm magazine photograph of face of 'WESLEY HALL (Barbados), age 25.', with swollen left eye.

Each 1p., 12mo. Both in fair condition, aged and worn. ONE (30 June 1898): 'Received an acct from you. The only error in it is that I dont owe you anything. I sent a cheque to settle up with you some months ago also an order for goods which you never sent so have not troubled you since'. He is returning the invoice. TWO (22 July 1898): 'In reply to yours yesterday I may tell you the goods for which you sent invoice were never supplied. So I cannot owe for them.' 56pp., 8vo. On aged, chipped paper, with slight damage at spine, rusted staples, and stamps of the Bibliothek Sporthochschule Köln. With loose damaged remains of brown printed wraps. Largely unopened. Berlin was selected as host city in July 1912, and preparations for the event began later in the year. Scarce. No copy found on COPAC, and of the ten copies on WorldCat, one in the IOC Library in Switzerland, five in Germany, one in Holland, one in France and two in the USA.

285pp., 8vo, including newspaper cuttings laid down on 24pp., and one loose cutting. In contemporary black leather half-binding, with brown cloth covers, and 'MINUTE BOOK' in gilt on front. Marbled endpapers. Ticket on rear pastedown of 'W. BLAIR, | Stationer, | Post Office Buildings | TONBRIDGE'. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in worn binding with front hinge split. Manuscript title: 'Tonbridge Cricket Week. | 1894. | First Held 1890'.

1p., 12mo. On aged and creased paper, with discoloration to one edge affecting a few words of text. Names of the club president, captain, vice-captain and members of the committee are given at the head, followed by Tozer's circular letter, discussing the AGM to be held at the Traveller's Rest Inn, Woodford Wells.

Not published. A fair copy, neatly written out over 8pp., 4to. 175 lines, in heroic couplets. On two bifoliums of wove paper, each with hunting-horn watermark of 'G R'. A well-written production, with valuable content regarding a loathsome practice which persisted in England until 1835.

[8]pp., 16mo (10.5 x 8 cm). Stitched into card wraps. In very good condition. An attractive production, wtih the light-blue card covers printed in dark blue ink, with the club's device, featuring a lion on top of a wheel, embossed and printed in red. A list of names of the 'Executive' is inside the front cover. With the sixteen 'Rules' on the first two pages, and the other headings: 'Racing Fixtures', 'Executive Meetings', 'General Meetings'; the fourth page carries general notes.

Nicely printed on both sides of a piece of 11 x 15cm card, folded once to make an 11 x 7.5cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages, and the internal double-page opening in portrait. The outer covers are blue, with a cloth weave; the internal opening is matte white.

4pp., 16mo (11.5 x 7.5 cm). Bifolium. Printed in black, within decorative red borders, on all four sides, with the outer covers grey and the internal pages white. In very good condition. A tasteful production, with the 'Officers, &c.' on the front cover, the twelve 'Rules' on the second page; 'Club Runs' on the third page (fifteen of them, between Wroxton on Wednesday 8 June [1892] and South Newington via Milcombe on Friday 29 July [1892]. Small vignette of a frog on a penny farthing centred on the back cover.

The three items in very good condition. ONE: 'Run Card for May & June, 1891.' 4pp., 16mo (11.5 x 7.5 cm). Bifolium. Printed in brown within decorative border on all four sides, on creamy-grey paper. In very good condition.

On a piece of 6 x 10 cm paper. Laid down on leaf removed from autograph album, next to a newspaper cutting of a photograph of Drobny at play. Three autographs on slips of paper laid down on the reverse of the leaf: one of 'Leonard Cheshire' and two of Hugh Foot (one 'Hugh Foot' and the other 'Hugh Caradon').

The seventeen signatures are on a piece of 8.5 x 11 cm paper, laid down on a leaf removed from an album, captioned '"ENGLAND" RUGBY FOOTBALL TEAM | 1954'. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Present (with one unidentified) are the signatures of Vic Leadbetter; Ted Woodward; Phil Jones; John Kendall-Carpenter; <?>; Jeff Butterworth; Pat Quinn; Eric Evans; Tug Wilson; Peter Young; Dickie Jeeps; Gordon Rimmer; Peter Yarranton; Rob Stirling; Martin Regan; Sandy Sanders; Reg Higgins. It may be that the item is misdated, as this exact team did not play in the Five Nations of that year.

Bannister achieved his record on 6 May 1954 at the Iffley Road Track in Oxford, with Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher providing the pacing. The signature ('Roger Bannister') is firmly written on a piece of 4 x 9.5 cm paper, laid down on an 11 x 16 cm leaf removed from an autograph album. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Laid down next to it is a 14.5 x 5 cm black and white photograph of Bannister running, cut from a magazine.

Ten pages, sm. folio, green paper covers, with title label as above, stapled (sl. rusty), covers slightly marked. contents foxed but clear. From the regulation height of ponies to handicapping. WITH: Manuscript, 5pp., 8vo, stapled to inside cover of the Rules, printed heading "MEMO || From Capt. G.B. Rimington, M.C. | Box 1884, NAIROBI", commencing "If No. 1 gets ball at roll[?] in No 2 to Back | If No 2 or 3 get ball No 1 goes to back [..., concluding] No. 3|| Must be well mounted. He is half back assisiting his forward in attack & helping his back in defence".

Crisply printed on both sides of a piece of 15 x 11.5 cm card. In very good condition, lightly-aged. Priced at a penny, the scorecard is headed 'Reigate Priory Cricket Ground. | Surrey v. Oxford University. | Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, June 21st, 22nd & 23rd, 1909.' Reverse carries an advertisement for J. Keasley & Sons, bakers, cooks and confectioners of Bell Street, Reigate. Oxford batted first, and the scorecard states that M. G. Salter is not out on 97, with A. J. Evans having been bowled by Platt for 47. The rest of the Oxford squad are J. A. Seitz, C. V. L. Hooman, C. S.

On 7 x 21 cm. rectangle, cut from the base of a 4to letter. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, laid down on a piece of card. With the word 'SCARVES.' printed in the right margin, from the shop Hobbs bought with the proceeds of his 1919 testimonial. The text reads: '<...> to similar appeals by this same post. | Please forgive me. | Yours very truly | [signed] J B. Hobbs.'

4pp, sm. folio, fold marks, one passage blotched but mainly readable. Kenmure's letter starts things off, followed by A Second Challenge by Kenmore to Nathan, itself followed by Nathan's answer to the foregoing. Apart from two insignificant variations the text, aprt from the order, is as printed in Memorabilia curliana mabenensia - Page 95. This book was published in 1830 (possibly 23 years after the poem was transcribed on the paper), and I have yet to told of earlier printings.

4to: 1 p. Fourteen lines of text. Aged and worn, with closed tears along the fold lines, but with text clear and complete. He thanks his correspondent for the letter ('It is always a great delight to me to know that people like my work.') and gives details of where the 'little book I published on "Pride of Body" ' can be purchased. Ends with the details of his 'new novel "A Soldier of Life" ': 'I mention it, as you say it is difficult for you to get hold of books and I should like you to read it.'

TWO COPIES, both octavo: iv + 158 pages. Several collotype plates, several in red and gold. In original green printed Sotheby wraps. Both items sound internally, with some wear to the wraps. One item has extensive pencil annotations to the front wraps, and the other has a few ink marks to the reverse, with minor wear to the last couple of leaves. Both catalogues partially priced with some names by the London booksellers Myers & Co. of New Bond Street, one on the second day of the sale and the other on the fifth.

On piece of paper roughly 2.5 x 5 cm. Laid down on leaf of cream paper, 8.5 x 12 cm, from an autograph album. In slightly faded blue ink, and with a crease to the bottom left-hand corner, affecting the lower loop of the 'J'.

For this eccentric club see 'The History of I Zingari' by R. L. Arrowsmith & B. J. W. Hill (1982). From the Mark Bonham Carter archive. Roughly five inches square. In poor condition: grubby and creased with several closed tears. Text entirely legible. Ink notes on back (by Bonham Carter?) including picture of sailing ship and reference to Somerset Maugham Prize. Reads 'The Governor, I Zingari, has pleasure in sending you a "Testamur" as a proof that you have successfully passed the probationary period.

Both 40 pages, 16mo. The first in original orange printed wraps and the second In original green printed wraps. Both in good condition, but with some spotting and discoloration to the wraps. Both include statistics and reports on the previous seasons. Club fixtures and some results filled in in ink and pencil in both. Two items,

English cricketer (1845-1901), wicket-keeper and right-handed batsman who played for Oxford University and M.C.C. 1 page, 16mo. Grubby and discoloured, with some fading, but no loss of text. The context raises the interesting possibility that a pseudonymous article might be identified as Boyle's. "Dr. Mr. Maxwell. | I enclose the paper on Lords Cricket which I think [hope] will be worth its space.
