WINCHESTER

Large (35 x 25 cm.) sumptuously-printed stitched pamphlet, in printed wraps. 16pp., with one additional collotype plate (stamped 'Specimen Colour Plate') and one tipped-in plate (of the binding), both coloured, and three full-page half-tone plates. Subscription form (The British Book Centre, Inc., New York), in red and black at rear. Aged and worn, with creasing to front cover. Includes three-page 'Commentary on a Unique Volume' by Winchester, and the first three pages of Wilson's text, two pages listing the contents, and specimen pages.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In very good condition. Covering the whole of the front page is a beautiful coloured illustration of the Imperial State Crown, with no text. The following three pages are printed in black and purple, with the second page carrying the publication details; the third page a full-page note from the editor; and the last page an advertisement for Sir John Wilson's 'Royal Philatelic Collection'. No copies of this item traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. Apparently unpublished. He complains of Lynd's 'very ill-natured review of my "Autobiograp[hy] [...] She makes the ridiculous statement that "a child" at a public school is "at most on speaking terms with five percent of his contemporaries". What utter nonsense. When I was at Winchester in my last two years I was "on speaking terms" with every boy in the school, and I was on intimate terms with at least 100 out of the 400 of which the school consisted. | What on earth can Mrs Lynd know about public schools?

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn grey paper. The only reference to a 'Tory' in Christabel Coleridge's 'Charlotte M. Yonge, Her Life and Letters' (London, 1903) is to one of Yonge's two kittens, born on the Queen's birthday in 1900. In a letter to Coleridge, 17 July 1900, she states that 'Tory is banished', and on 1 August 1900 she reports that she has seen 'Tory in his new abode - also stepped on him'. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the letter is a playful one, addressed to his new owner.

1p., small 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged and creased paper, with slight loss to one corner. Docketed by Clarabut at the head of the page: 'Re book of hours Christie lot 194 8.xii.58'. He thanks Clarabut for 'the solution of the bookplate', and asks him if he knows 'how & when that library was sold', as it would be 'interesting to note'. 'When at the Hague I'll see in my catalogue-list if I find anything on the name of Bateman.'

4pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He considers the cut excellent, and is grateful to Brooks for having 'managed so well' with his article. 'Many such an article of mine has been sacrificed, though absolutely a pretty good one, and comparatively to that which stood in its place, superexcellent. But such is my luck. By the by, don't measure the quantity of all that I do by what appeareth.' He reports that 'Fred is much amused with the verses on the Queen's first baby. I said that there are two men here besides himself who understand a joke.

All items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letters total 33pp., 12mo; and 31pp, 16mo; with nine on 12mo bifoliums, seven on 16mo bifoliums and two on single 16mo leaves. Nine are on Southgate House letterheads, and two on Winchester College letterheads. All are complete except the last, which lacks the last part. Mostly addressed to 'My dear Aunty' and signed in a variety of ways, from 'J. Bowyer B. Nichols' to 'BBN'. The first letter, dated 4 December 1871, sets the tone, showing Bowyer Nichols to be a precocious and spirited twelve-year-old.

The full title reads: 'Articles of Visitation and Inquiry, Concerning Matters Ecclesiastical, given to the Ministers, Church-Wardens, and Sidesmen, of every Parish within the Diocese of Lincoln, at the Triennial Visitation of the Right Rev. Father in God, George, Lord Bishop of that Diocese, in the Year of Our Lord, M,DCC,XCIV.' 8vo, 8 pp. On two bifoliums, unstitched and unbound. Aged and lightly stained, with wear causing loss to a few words of text on the last leaf. After sections on 'The Church-Wardens OATHS.

Townsend was a member of the Holland House circle. Two of his poems were compared favourably with Wordsworth by J. G. Lockhart. 4to, 80 pp, followed by a manuscript leaf, paginated 81 and 82, with the poems 'Sonnet, On Viewing St Paul's from Blackfriar's Bridge' and 'Sonnet | Richmond late in the Evening'. In original brown cloth boards, worn, rebacked and repaired, with 'WINCHESTER.' in gilt on front. Internally sound and tight, on aged paper. Tipped on the recto of the front free endpaper is a presentation inscription: 'With the Authors | Kind regards:- | Jany: 30th: 1837'.

Folio, 9 pp. Unpublished. Written in landscape, with the title ('Samuel Wilberforce - DD | Bishop of Winchester | July 19th. 1873') on the first leaf and the poem on the following eight. The leaves held together with pink string. On paper watermarked 'EDWIN PARR | DULCOTE MILLS | 1861'. Text clear and complete. The commencement sets the tone of the poem, fully worthy of its subject 'Soapy Sam': 'A jennet stumbled on a grassy knoll - | And without sound or sign | Passed from Time's foremost rank a peerless Soul - | A Chief by right divine.

12mo, 7 pp. Text clear and complete. On aged discoloured paper, with rusting staple having been removed. The last page carries a 'List of Characters' played by Gatty, from the 'First Gravedigger' in 'Hamlet' in 1866 to 'Tony Lumpkin' in 'She Stoops to Conquer' in 1882. The reviews, in small type over the previous six pages, are highly favourable, from a range of papers from the Guardian to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph. 4to, 2 pp. Bifolium, with each printed page on the recto of the leaf. Good, on aged paper. With part of the previous mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Five objections are given, including the fact that the primer is 'unattractive in its present form'.

Four pages, bifolium, 4to, fold marks, mainly good condition. Text comprises a letter from W.A. Fearon, Secretary to the Committee who conveys the information to subscribers that Butterfield's plans have been approved (he tendered at £2300) are available for the view of Wykehamists, giving details of the size of the room. This letter, asking for payment also presumably by the laggards, occupies two thirds of the first page. The rest comprises a "List of Subscriptions" divided according to where they were received (Oxford, Winchester, etc), total received £2271.14.0.

Darwin and Huxley's 'soapy Sam' (1805-73). 1 page, approximately 4 1/2 inches by 7 inches. In good condition with minor discoloration to bottom edge. Reads 'I hereby empower Mr Magrath to append my name as the Seconder of the Rev Frederick Reeves for the ballot of the Athenaeum | I have accidentally omitted to Subscribe my own name | S Oxon:' Docketed on the reverse.

Dean of St Paul's Cathedral (1815-90). 4 pages, 16mo. Heavy discoloration, and rust damage from paper-clip. He is glad that he can address his correspondent as Archdeacon, praising him for having shown 'so much judgement & ability in important positions in convocation'. Goes to great lengths declining an invitation, explaining that for health reasons he intends 'to be as far as I dare get in the South, perhaps to Sicily'. Signed 'R W Church'.

Theologian (1824-79; DNB) and biographer of Samuel Wilberforce, successively Bishop of Oxford and Winchester. 4 pages, 16mo. In good condition though grubby. The envelope is addressed to 'John Evans Esqre. | 17 Brazenose Street. | Manchester'. He says the 'only suggestion I can offer is that probably W. H. Smith, or Mudie, may have second hand copies to part with at a reduced price. They usually publish catalogues of their second hand Library Books with a page devoted to periodicals.
