[by Major-General Whitworth Porter (1827-1892) of the Royal Engineers]'. Prince Albert had intended to buy the book, but will take pleasure in accepting the copy the recipient of the letter has 'had so handsomely bound'.

viii + [1] + 77pp., 8vo. In purple cloth binding, gilt. Internally good, on aged paper, in worn binding, with dulled gilt title on spine. Inscribed on flyleaf 'To | G. A. R. FitzGerald Esq | With the kind regards of | Theodore Martin | 3d April 1886.' Above this the ownership signature of 'R G E Sandbach', whose bookplate is on the front pastedown.

Ralph Steadman's position as one of the finest of all British caricaturists and cartoonists is assured. While he is best known for his collaborations with Hunter S. Thompson, Steadman's savage satirical studies in Private Eye and his humorous cartoons in Punch are equally memorable.

5 + [1]pp., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and lightly-worn, with slightly rusted staples and rust stain from paperclip. Scarce: the only actual copy on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat at the LSE in London.

ONE: (Queen Alexandra's card): With Buckingham Palace letterhead and mourning border. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. The card reads: 'I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to all the kind Donars, [sic] of the beautiful wreaths & flowers which were sent as tokens of affection in memory of our beloved King'. TWO (Streatfeild's letter): Signed 'Henry Streatfeild | <?> | Equerry'. 2pp., 12mo. On the first leaf of a bifolium with mourning border. In envelope with printed crown and mourning border, addressed by Streatfeild to 'Mrs. Macdougall-Rawson | Millhouse | Halifax'.

50pp., 12mo. In light-blue boards, with white label on front board carrying title and illustration of sickle with sheaves of lavender. Internally good, on lightly-aged paper, in worn and aged boards. Uncommon: only three copies on COPAC (British Library, Oxford and National Library of Scotland), with a further four in American institutions on WorldCat. Farmar's only other book appears to have been 'Castles in Spain' (1907). She also produced the lyrics to a song titled 'Bluebell-time', with music by Ruby Holland.

All three items with 1898 manuscript presentation inscription to the Education Department Library (later the Board of Education Reference Library) by Cecil Davis. All three in fair condition, on aged paper, in worn and chipped printed wraps bearing label and shelfmark. All three 32pp., 12mo (No.III. Vol.II of the magazine paginated 65-96). Scarce: COPAC only lists copies of the magazine at the British Library, Oxford and the National Library of Scotland; and no copies of the 'Occasional Paper' located.

The 40 items range in size from 25 x 19cm to 5 x 4.5cm. All in good condition, lightly-aged, and all but five laid down on the grey paper leaves of a heavily-worn album, with back cover loose, and with ownership signature of Sir Michael's wife Elisabeth Clapham at head of first page. The couple married in 1935, and one of the 40 items is a card with text in red featuring Elisabeth's maiden name. It conveys 'Good wishes for Christmas & the New Year from Elisabeth Rea | 6 Barton Street, S.W.1'.

The two volumes uniform in grey printed wraps. 12mo: 77 + [9] pp., and 77 + [11] pp. Both in good condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn wraps. Both with stamp and red label of the Board of Education Reference Library. Both volumes with extensive lists of English, Welsh and Roman Catholic schools. Scarce: the only copies on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat in the British Library.

16pp., 8vo, inc. printed wraps, small closed tears, front wrap, slightly rusted staples, other unobtrusive staining at edges. It comprises an Introduction by Pepler on the historyof the St Dominic's Press, a Book List, list of Notepaper and Postcards, and entries for individaul works with woodcuts. ENCLOSED: Typed Note Signed "Truscott Hargrave" ("Secretary", Saint Dominic's Press) to Messrs E. Whitby & Son, The Library, 17 Princes Street, Yeovil, Somerset, 27 Feb.

1p., 16mo. Good, on lightly-aged and spotted laid paper. A few pencil calculations on the reverse. Neatly printed. Giving details for the three terms: Lent, Summer and Michaelmas, with dates for 'Pupils re-assemble', 'Opening Address to Pupils', 'Reading of the Reports and Closing Address' and 'Pupils leave'. These details are followed by the following notices: 'Parents are earnestly requested to co-operate with the School authorities in enforcing punctuality of attendance at the beginning and end of Term.

Both letters in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Letter One (25 June 1883): 6pp., 12mo.

65pp., in narrow ruled 32 x 13 cm notebook, with maroon embossed boards and cloth spine. Rankin has etched his initials into the front board. All in pencil, with the first page headed 'NO I LECTURES JAN-FEB. 44 | T M RANKIN. 7394616. 13 F.D.S.', and carrying a numbered list of 38 topics, from 'Observation of Patient' and 'Diet of Disease' to 'Fracture of Spine' and 'Burns'. Four pages of medical notes follow. Upside-down at the other end of the volume are 59 paginated pages of further notes, preceded by a list of a further 15 topics (numbered 39-53), from 'Eye Drops' to 'Rheumatic Fever'.

Persis Burkitt. | July 17th.' Bookplate in green and black of D. Tecwyn Lloyd. The "second book printed at the Essex House Press".

94 + [i] pp. In original green cloth with title in black on front cover. Good, lightly-aged in lightly-worn and spotted binding. Ownership signature ('') in pencil on title-page, with pencil annotations throughout translating passages into French. Chapters on 'Shadowing', 'Burglaries', 'Identification of Criminals', 'Forgeries', 'Confessions', 'Murder Cases', 'Grafters', 'Detective Work in Department Stores', 'Railroad Detective Work', 'Detective Work for Street Railways', 'Other Kinds of Detective Work' (the last including 'Illegal Liquor selling').

On one side of a piece of wove paper, 15.5 x 9.5 cm. In fair condition, on aged paper, with one creased corner and a small nick at the head. The drop-head title is in capitals, with the second line having only the opening quotation marks (before the initial word 'BEWARE'). The poem is 29 lines long, with three seven-line stanzas followed by an eight-line one. At the foot of the poem: 'Albury. Mary Frances Tupper.' The first stanza reads 'The stamp of Rome is on their heart, | Take care! take care! | They play the Jesuits' crafty part, | Beware! beware!

1p., 12mo. On piece of aged and lightly-creased laid paper. The engraving, at the head of the page, is 7 x 9.5 cm., is a stylised full-length depiction of a young man in eighteenth-century dress, wearing a cravat, with hands on hips, standing between two trees. The poem reads 'Dear He - / Or She - / This from me, / Victor B. / Neuburg, to thee.' Second stanza: 'Not me: we, / I forgot, you see.' In bottom left-hand corner, in italics, 'Christmas, 1921.' And in italics in bottom-right: 'The Vine Press, / Steyning, / Sussex.' No other copy found listed.

On a 12mo bifolium of laid paper with 'DUNEDIN NOTE' watermark. Good, on lightly-aged paper. On the cover are a large black swastika and the words 'An Old-Time Greeting.' The poem, titled 'The Rune of the Swastika.' and signed in type 'J. S. M.', is on the recto of the second leaf.

1 p, 4to. Trimmed at top, causing slight loss to first word ('Sir'), otherwise good, on lightly-aged paper, with one short closed tear. Regarding a series of publications he was purchasing, begins 'Sir | I am very sorry indeed to find that No's 11 & 12 are wanting - No 13. is among the lot. | The rest are | No 1, 2, 12, Old Series - | [...]'. There follows a column listing volumes in the 'New Series'.

12mo, 1 p. Eight lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with slight trace of mount on reverse. In reply to his address of 'gracious lady' she must reply 'gracious sir'. She is 'so pleased' to get his commendation of her 'The Best of Friends: Further Letters to Sydney Carlyle Cockerell', and is sending his letter on 'to Sir Sydney, who has long been bed-ridden', as she knows it will give him pleasure.

On piece of good quality art paper, 15 x 19 cm. In good condition, in grey card frame. Shows a cheery Acton in profile, drawn in grey and black. Signed in ink on drawing 'b.g.b. | 82', with 'Sir Harold Acton at the Arts Club 20.I.82' in pencil at foot. On the reverse of the drawing Bagnall has written 'Brian Bagnall | Sir Harold Acton at a private view of Russell Forman paintings Arts Club 20.I.82'.

On the title page Stevens is described as 'GMB FSA ETC | Sometime Student in Yale College in America | now of London'. Leaf of addenda not present. Uncommon, copies on COPAC at the British Library, National Library of Scotland, Oxford, Cambridge, and the V & A and Society of Antiquaries libraries.

An attractive pamphlet, with the illustrations accompanying sections entitled Summer and Winter. At end: 'The text was set in 12 pt. Bodoni by A. File and A. Morris and the machine work is by D. Jackson and B. Dove'. Scarce: no copy on COPAC.

A children's book, with attractive illustrations of children playing, either in red or green. Colophon reads: 'Compositors: D. Beech and J. Baker | Pressmen: G. V. Jones and G. Knott | The Illustrations are printed from the original lino-cuts.' Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at Cambridge.
