Seven pamphlets, unbound, 20-32pp., 8vo, one damaged but complete,another sl. chipped, others complete and in fair condition, with labels, numbers and stamps of the Board of Education, sometimes obtrusive. Dating 1892-3, 1898-99 (missing 1893-4 to 1897-8), 1899-1900, 1900-1, 1901-2-3, 1903-4, 1905-6. Contents listed on title as follows: 1. Council of the Society; 2. Objects of the Society; 3. Prospectus of the Training College; 4. List of Former Students (many of their later "appointments", jobs, listed).

Two 8vo pamphlets entitled "Training Department of the Cheltenham Ladies' College" , 1899 and 1903, with twelve (12) pamphlets entitled "Prospectus of the Cheltenham Ladies' College Teachers' Training Department", unbound, c.9-11 pages each, 8vo, with Board of Education stamps, numbers and labels (stamps usually on front, labels on back). All give information about staff, courses, accommodation, qualifications, etc. Note: Se Josephine Kamm's "Hope Deferred (Routledge Revivals): Girls' Education in English History"for thinformation and context.

32pp., 8vo. In brown makeshift wraps, with blue ribbon. No title leaf, and no indication of the author. The only information, apart from the drop-head title and printers' slug on last page, in manuscript on front wrap: 'University College | London | 1828-1878 | A Lecture Introductory to the | 51st. Session | by | Henry Morley | 1879.' In fair condition, on lightly aged paper. Label (of the Board of Education Reference Library) on front wrap.

The six items in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. With stamps, shelfmarks and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library. The four calendars of 'Special Arrangements' are all 1p., foolscap 8vo, and signed in type at the foot by T. Gregory Foster, Principal, and Walter W. Seton, Acting Secretary. They give details of lectures and other information including the 'Reception of new Students by the Principal and the respective Deans' and the 'Last Day for receiving Essays'. The other two documents only carry Foster's signature in type.

Both items in fair condition, on aged paper, with shelfmarks, stamps and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library. 'Brief Report': 32pp., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn grey printed wraps strengthened at the spine with brown tape. Headings include 'Provision for training in Economics and Political Science', 'Character and Objects of School', 'Methods of Organisation', and 'Property of the School and the Library'. Also the 'complete curriculum of the School', pp.9-17, and list of lecturers (pp.17-20). 'A Brief Description': 7pp., 4to.

The two items bound together in green morocco quarter-binding with marbled boards. On aged paper, with front board and title leaf of first pamphlet detached from rest of volume, and lacking spine. In poor condition, on aged and worn paper, with closed tears, and lacking orange wraps (which presumably carry the full title-page), traces of which are still present. Includes 26pp. of tables. Preface (p.2) by Gater and 'Appendix II' (pp.19-20) by Sir Cyril Burt ('Memorandum by Dr. Cyril Burt, Psychologist in the Education Officer's Department of the London County Council.') The only copy on COPAC at the Guildhall Library, City of London, and the only two copies on OCLC WorldCat both in the United States.

The report by Brassey, Farrant and Foster, covers pp.1-4. It is followed (pp.5-6) by a 'Table showing requirements of respective departments', a 'List of professorships and lectureships requiring endowments (pp.7); a 'First list of subscriptions' (pp.8-10) and a 'Second list of subscriptions' (p.11).

One punch hole to top inner corner of each leaf (for the attaching of the item to others), affecting two words of text, pencil shelfmarks and the number '16.' in red ink at head of first page. Lightly creased on aged paper, with three horizontal fold lines. Williams and Madan 282B ('The Lewis Carroll Handbook', pp.198-199).

22 items, comprising an unbroken run of 19 issues from 1912 to 1930, together with the issue for 1907, and a copy of the 'Report of the Jersey National & St. Helier's Parochial Schools. 1898-1899' (1900) and the 'Rapport de l'Inspecteur Médical pour l'Année 1916' (1917). In a sturdy green cloth box ('Supplied for the Public Service'). All with stamps, shelfmarks and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library. All 22 items are uniform 8vo booklets, stitched in pink printed wraps, ranging in length from 17 to 67pp.

56 items, comprising an unbroken run of 53 issues from 1911 to 1963, together with the issues for 1967 and 1969, and a copy of the 'Report of the Buchan School Commission | July, 1951'. The first eleven issues (ending in 1921) are more substantial than the rest, and are housed in the first box.

36pp., small 4to. Includes eight full-page tables, pp.28-36. Stapled. In grey printed wraps. In fair condition, on aged paper, in worn wraps, with slight damage at fore-edge of last leaf. Stamps, shelfmark and label of the Board of Education Reference Library and the British Education Committee, Royal Commission, St. Louis Exhibition, 1904. In his preface Hailmann sees the 'attempts to colonize America' as a 'struggle set between brutal greed and a certain irrepressible spirit of fair play on the part of the intruding race in their intercourse with the Indians'.

216pp., 8vo, paginated i-viii, 6-212. With numerous engravings of views and plans of schools, 'school architecture' (desks, blackboards and so on), and diagrams and illustrations of gymnastics. Divided into three sections: 'School Architecture', 'School Economy and Discipline' and 'Selections for public Recitation in Schools'. Two-page appendix: 'New Brick School House at Simcoe, County of Norfolk'. In original printed wraps of cloth backed with card. In fair condition, on aged paper, in heavily worn wraps. The volume contains an interesting selection of stamps and labels.

Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copies on COPAC in the National Library of Wales and the Guildhall Library, London.

Entirely in English, and with no explanation of why it should be so. Scarce: the only copies on COPAC at the British Library, Oxford and Cambridge, with OCLC WorldCat only adding a fourth copy at Leipzig.

These three log books, covering a period of nearly eighty years, constitute an attractive piece of social history, charting the growth of a rural school from precarious beginnings to a secure state on the eve of the Second World War, and providing a vivid example of the change in the British educational system from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
