On both sides of a rectangular (5.5 x 16.5 cm) strip cut from letter. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. Recto: '4 Brixton place | Brixton Surry [sic] | Janry: 12th. 1833 | Sir | M Mackenzie has conveyed to me y polite offier of allowing a few prospectus of my [...]'. Verso: 'to Dr. Tournay by my friend Dr Burney, but as your house is the rendezvous of all the learned & the rich in Oxford, perhaps it is unnecessary for me to solicit the onor of Dr Tournay's influence. | I remain, | [...]'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with light stain from mount at head of reverse of second leaf. He begins by thanking the unnamed recipient for his 'kind attention to my request' and giving his coming address at Guildford as 'J. Pagan's Esqre | Oak Lodge'.

TLS: 2pp., 12mo. In good condition. The letter begins: 'Dear Al: | Last Thursday morning, while sitting in a barbar chair, I asked myself a question which a number of people have been asking me recently, namely, What are you doing at Harvard? I couldn't come up with a very satisfactory answer, so I went to a friend's house on Cape Cod for the weekend. Monday I saw the head of the English Department at Harvard, H. C. Baker. He said, "Follow your star," which seemed to me a little romantic, but all the same good advice.

Dougal received an appreciative obituary in The Times, 15 June 1948 ('His contributions to the literature of his subject were numerous and valuable. [...] his reputation was world wide. [...] only ill-health prevented him from allowing himself to be nominated for the presidency of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, an honour he richly deserved.').

A total of 1290 pages, in six 4to notebooks. Internally clean, on lightly aged paper, in worn and repaired bindings, with the back cover of one of the volumes loose. Day has signed three of the covers, and decorated the cover of one volume with the crests of three Universities: Montenegro, St Andrews and London. All the texts are carefully written out Day's neat, close hand, with tables and graphs, some titles in red ink, and occasional pencil annotations. A list of the contents of the six volumes ends this description.

The title 'The Study of Arts in a Modern University' is present, printed in red, on the front cover. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copies on COPAC at Oxford and Liverpool.

8pp., 12mo. Stapled. Aged and creased. On first page: 'It is not proposed to issue a complete programme for the Summer Term. This leaflet contains all additions and alterations in the announcements of lectures, classes and seminars made in the School Calendar, together with the General Time Table for the current Term.' The table covers the last four pages, and gives details of the Time; Short Title; Lecturer; No. of Course; Date of beginning. Lectures include 'The Constitution of the United States' by 'Prof. Westermarck', 'Economic History from 1485 (Class)' by 'Mr.

On 4.5 x 9.5 cm rectangle of paper, cut from letter. In fair condition, lightly aged, and laid down on part of leaf from album. Reads: 'Yours vy trly | Henry Thompson'.

Each letter 1p., 8vo. In very good condition, lightly aged and worn. The first two letters in autograph, the other three typed. ONE (26 May 1973): He condoles with her on her husband's death. 'I always greatly admired his poetry & then his work as a critic. I've just been writing down hisname in the index of my second book of Oxford lectures, where I refer briefly to both these activities of his. It is a sad loss, particularly to those of us who admire creative & sensitive scholarship, so rare & so much needed now.

The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | I send you a report - the latest we have issued. It is cut down to 1/3 of its usual size. The regulations given are prewar conditions & hardly obtain now. We now require a man to pay what he can [last three words underlined] towards his board but no good candidate would be rejected because he could not find a penny. Practically this obtained before the war but we emphasise that now.
