Subtitled on p.1: 'A Paper read on June 4th, 1924, at the Annual Congress in the Mansion House, Dublin, the Revd. Professor Finlay, M.A., S.J., presiding, and reprinted by the Association by desire of the Congress.' Scarce.

Sir (James William) Ronald Macleay (1870-1943) was educated at Charterhouse and Balliol College, Oxford. He entered the diplomatic service in 1895. According to his obituary in The Times, 8 March 1943, Macleay 'achieved much' in 'an unostentatious way', during a diplomatic career spanning four decades, and was known by his colleagues as 'the Worthy Master'.

Both copies 16pp., 12mo, and both stapled in white wraps. Copy 1: Published by the Chinese People's Committee for World Peace and Against American Aggression. Title printed in red. Name of author given at foot of last page: '---- By LIN TA-KUANG.' In fair condition, aged, and on browned high-acidity newsprint, in creased wraps. Copy 2: 'Daily News Release' copy. Title given in black. Apparently identical in its typesetting to Copy 1, but without the author's name. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with short pencil notes on cover and elsewhere.

The three documents mimeographed on folio paper. Part III: 21pp. Part IV: 24pp. Part V: 18pp.; totalling 63pp. All three in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with the last leaves of Parts III and IV loose.

The collection is in very good condition, lightly-aged, and with only a handful of items with light damp staining. 60 issues of Peking Review ('A weekly magazine of Chinese news and views') between 4 January 1963 and 17 December 1965, comprising 17 issues from 1963, between no. 1 (4 January) and no. 25 (21 June); one issue from 1964 (no. 49, 4 December); 42 issues from 1965, between no. 6 (5 February) and no. 51 (17 December). Accompanying the issues are two of the air mail envelopes in which the magazine was sent to Basil Stein in London from China by distributors Guozi Shudian.

Circular Letter, mimeographed, awaiting a signature, one page, 4to, good condition. It commences, We, the undersigned Irish Artists and Writers venture to appeal ... The circumstances surrounding the disposition of Hugh Lane’s Pictures are retailed, and an appeal for the codicil by which they were to go to Dublin to be respected.

Mimeograph, 2pp. fol., pages detached from each other, slightly foxed and chipped, but complete. The internees are characterised, not just Irish (but sub-heading There are still 2 Irish girls interned here) but people the British describe as German sympathisers, some of whom are simply interested in Indian independence. Conditions are Russian. Not listed.

Mimeograph, 8pp., fol., pages detached from each other, slightly stained, foxed and chipped, but complete.(There are at present between 540 & 550 Irish Prisoners at Frongoch). Subjects of report include: housing, events, food, disease, financial aspects, brief report on Mulkerrin who wrote an impertinent letter, Irish books sent but not received, fatigue duty refused, status of prisoners, interception of complaints. It commences, The Committee of the Irish National Relief Fund (London Branch of the Irish National Aid and Volunteer Dependents’ Fund) having been closely in touch with all the events which led up to the release of the interned prisoners at Frongoch, Reading and Aylesbury are convinced that the release was due to the sustained public protests in Ireland ...

It concerns English Government intentions and statements about Ireland in 1917 and 1918, calling Irishmen to oppose this effort to deny an ancient nation – Ireland- the right of self-determination. Author unknown, possibly by Lynd himself. Three copies on WorldCat (NLI, University College, Dublin and Princeton).

J[ames]. J[oseph]. Walsh, Handbill poem, one page, 12mo, creased laid paper, mainly good condition. It is headed ‘THE Flag on the G.P.O. | Easter 1917. | By J. J. Walsh’, and with ‘J. J. Walsh.’ again at foot. The first of three stanzas reads: Why gather the crowd in O’Connell Street? | Why throng all the people there? | What eminent personage do they greet? | With the shouts that fill the air? | Who comes this morning or what’s to be seen | That they hurry and push them so? | ’Tis the rebel standard – white, orange and green | That floats from the G.P.O.

Autograph Signature at end: ‘Lennox Robinson.’ Typescript, 3pp, 4to, good condition.. A bitter denunciation of British rule, written in the immediate aftermath of the 1916 Easter Rising. It begins, ‘Even as I write it is too late; the mischief has been done; eight of the Sinn Fein leaders have been shot.’ Three manuscript emendations: the change of ‘eight’ to ‘12’ here and on p.2; and of ‘treaties’ to ‘treaty’ on p.3.[...] | I write from the South, from a quiet country district. Here there was no trouble.

6pp., 4to, good condition, IN IRISH, translation as follows: "(On top) Write to me soon! ||Deirdre, my dear friend – I was delighted to receive your letter. Thank you very much. Forgive me for not writing much earlier: we are all greatly upset here over the deaths of Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins – isn’t it terrible news! I cannot believe it is true – I don’t know what the country will do without them. It disgusts me to think of Michael Collinsand the way they killed him like a dog; a curse on them, may they choke, the dirty villains!

From the papers of Pinfang Hsia, whose death ('Bank of China aide') was recorded in the New York Times of 23 December 1970.In the 1961 'Diplomat's Annual' the Bank of China's head office was said to be in Peking, China, with the London office at 147 Leadenhall Street. The collection is in good overall condition, with all texts clear and complete on lightly-aged paper. The fourteen deeds are customary English legal documents of the period, all typewritten and filled in in manuscript, with the dimensions of each around 37 x 24 cm. Some are attached with green ribbon.

Number 17 in an edition of 50. Very good in slightly grubby portfolio. The portfolio is half-bound in black buckram with grey paper boards, dimensions 34 x 27 cm. On front board: 'JOSEF SCHWARZMANN | FÜNF RADIERUNGEN'. Dimensions of mounts and letterpress leaves (in thick cream wove paper) 32 x 25 cm. Initial bifolium consists of title and contents leaves, the latter giving the titles of the five engravings as: '1. Sitzender Junge', '2. Portrait H. W.', '3. Portrait L.', '4. Bäuerin' and '5. Landschaft'.

Printed on one side of a piece of laid paper roughly 31 x 19.5 cm. 21 lines. Clear and complete on lightly-aged laid paper with Britannia watermark. Headed 'By the Commissioners for Executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, &c.' and addressed 'To The respective Admirals, Captains, Commanders, and Commanding Officers of His Majesty's Ships and Vessels.' Signed by 'J. Troubridge', 'Jas. Adams', 'W Garthshore' and ('By Command of their Lordships') by 'Wm Marsden'.

The cover is printed on one side of a piece of shiny art paper, roughly 20.5 x 13 cm. Photograph of Kubelik and his violin roughly 10.5 x 8 cm. Paper lightly creased and with slight wear along vertical fold across middle of photograph. Good firm signature.

12mo, 3 pp. Good, on browned and lightly creased paper with some wear to extremities. In French. Long thorough order with instructions for delivery, casting light on the logistical problems encountered in international trade in nineteenth-century Europe. Pražak is sending 'six pièces d'or à vingt francs, ou une somme de 120 francs en or', and gives a list of four books he would like sent to him. There follows a discussion of the problems of delivering the books to Prague.

Three pages, octavo. Very good on lightly aged paper. Interesting communication from one of the nineteenth-century's leading historians to another, with an evaluation of Froude's work by Motley. He is disappointed that Froude's visit to London precedes his own. He has been in Brussels since January, 'occupied with an important <?> correspondence', and is on his way to join his family in Nice. Gives plans for the summer (Switzerland, Germany and London). Thanks the Warrens for their kind remembrance.

Two pages, folio. Good, but on discoloured and lightly creased paper, with remains of stub adhering to one edge of verso. In English, with illegible signature. Begins 'The State Office of Statistics appreciating fully the great importance of an exact information of the British publicity of the conditions in the Czechoslovakia has the honour to send you simultaneously her following publications.' Five items listed.

The pictures, which vary in size from 3 inches by 5 inches to 3 inches square, are crudely pasted to a piece of grey card, beneath a heading made up of three pieces apparently cut out of newspapers or magazines and reading 'Royal Wedding Day | 23 July | Andrew & Sarah 1986'. All seven pictures appear to be cropped, and several bear traces of glue. Corners dogeared. In pencil on reverse 'Photographs by Gerald Guttman (= photographer)'. Four pictures, apparently taken from the television, feature the royal couple.
