The distinguished wartime career of George Patrick John Rushworth Jellicoe (1918-2007), 2nd Earl Jellicoe, is well described in Loma Almonds' 'A British Achilles' (2006). However Jellicoe, who commanded the Special Boat Section from 1943 to the end of the war, was not always blessed with success. The present collection of eighteen documents constitutes Jellicoe's own file on what Almonds describes as a 'shambles': an attempted series of sabotage attacks on six Sardinian airfields in the run-up to the allied invasion of Sicily.

Accompanying the letter is a translation (2pp., 8vo) by Colin Jordan, with the assistance of Dr Loukas Christodloulos. The letter is of great interest, casting light on Leigh Fermor's activities in Crete in the period following the Second World War.

The talk itself covers pp.1-22, and the session of 'Questions and Answers' pp.23-60. Typed notes in the text (Spelling?', 'Distorted', 'Indistinct') indicate that the transcription was made from a recording. Besides the questions in the latter section are pencil notes relating to the identity of the questioner ('Craig', 'Scott', 'Asian', 'Australian').

The document is divided into sections discussing MCP aims, tactics, 'Youth, Students and Schoolchildren', 'Labour', propaganda, 'The United Front', and a conclusion. 'It should be clearly understood that the Malayan Communist Party owes allegiance to the World Communist Movement led by the Soviet Union, with Communist China in close support, which aims to set up (by revolutionary means if necessary) a World Union of Socialist Soviet Republics.

Both items foolscap 8vo. Stapled together. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper, with first leaf of first document loose. Nicol, who joined the Malayan Union Police Force in 1950, and in the Royal Malaysian Poilce between 1957 and 1967, 'to assist in promoting and consolidating the successful transition to full independence. During this period the Special Branch played a vital role in maintaining peace and security in the country.'

The text begins: 'The insurgents in Burma, some 24,000 strong, are variously motivated by ideology, ethnic aspirations or prospects of profits from smuggling and dacoity.' The three items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All three are 1p., 4to, and printed in purple on government 'S O | ABSORBENT' paper. Item One: Special Order of the Day, 11 November 1918. Signed in type at foot: 'J. BYNG, General, | Commanding Third Army.' It begins: 'The operations of the last three months have forced the enemy to sue for an armistice as a prelude to peace. | Your share in the consummation of this achievement is one that fills me with pride and admiration.

The collection is in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with all texts clear and complete. Totaling 223 pp in 4to (67 letters) and 30 pp in 12mo (6 letters). Twelve of the letters (4to, 30 pp; 12mo, 4 pp) date from 1928; thirty-two (4to, 93 pp; 12mo, 14 pp) from 1929; and twenty-nine (4to, 100 pp; 12mo, 12 pp) from 1930. All are addressed to 'My darling Mummy', with Leahy usually signing his name in full, and occasionally as 'A. J. Leahy', 'John Leahy' or 'John'.

12mo, 11 pp. Text clear and legible. On one side each of eleven leaves of lightly-aged paper, with slight creasing at foot of some leaves. The pages are numbered, and the article is incomplete, cutting off halfway through a sentence on p.11. An interesting and well-informed analysis, from an unashamedly pro-Japanese viewpoint.
