All four items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. All four in a bold, expansive hand. The two letters accompanied by their envelopes, addressed to Child in London. Letter One: Address: 'c/o Mr & Mrs G. W. Williams, | 615 East Genesee, | Saginaw | Michigan. U.S.A.' 4 July 1957. 4pp., 4to. She is 'on the first lap of my Vacation' and has asked 'Anne' to contact him. 'During the University year I am so frightfully taxed for time - my own correspondence and my personal affairs suffer in consequence and are perforce relegated to the background.

40pp., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and worn, no wraps, disbound. On pp.36-40: 'Letter to the Editor of The Times, from Mrs. Fawcett', signed at end 'Millicent Garrett Fawcett. | June 7.'

[3]pp., 8vo. Bifolium with heading: 'Vigilance Association for the Defence of Personal Rights.' In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with evidence of side stitching. Text begins: 'The Royal Commissioners for inquiring into the operation of the Factory and Workshops Acts have issued the following circular:- [...]'. The third page is headed 'LIST OF PUBLICATIONS relating to the Subject of this Paper, to be obtained at the Office of the Vigilance Association, 27, Great George Street, Westminster.' No copy traced.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium with drophead title. In fair condition, lightly-aged and worn, disbound with evidence of side stitching. No copy traced, either on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

16 ALsS, 2 TLsS, 1 ACS. Also included are a draft of Arthur's first letter to Harrison (see Item Twenty below), a photograph of Harrison and Mary S. Sims (Item Twenty-three), and two papers on workers' rights in China (Items Twenty-one and Twenty-two). The collection is in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Ten of the nineteen items are in their envelopes, addressed to Arthur at 59 Howard Rd, New Malden, Surrey, with three sent from on board ship (SS Aquitania, SS Mauretania and SS Berengaria). The letters total 43pp. (see each letter for format).

All three 8vo; the first and last 12pp, the second 8pp. All three in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. With shelfmarks, stamps and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library, London. The remit of the committee was 'to examine the problem of child adoption from the point of view of possible legislation and to report upon the main provisions which in their view shuold be included in any Bill on the subject'.

The 'Majority Report' section under the following main headings: Origin and Course of Inquiry; General Results of the Investigation; Remedies and Recommendations; Summary of Recommendations and Conclusions. A large part of the document discusses 'Street Trading'.

The three items in good condition, on aged paper. The second letter is addressed to 'Messrs Sonnenschein & Co', and from the context the other two are clearly to the same recipients.ONE: 2pp., 12mo. He states that he would be 'willing to edit Perez's work provided that the translation is well done & that only a general revision of it is necessary', and that he 'could not undertake to correct a faulty piece of work'. He asks the publishers to send him the manuscript, 'so that I may judge, together with a copy of the original', and asks for their terms.

11pp., 12mo. Stitched. With stamp, shelfmarks and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC in the library of the Royal College of Surgeons.

10pp., 4to. Printed on one side each of ten leaves, attached to one another by a staple in the top left-hand corner. Very good on lightly-aged paper.

On one side of a piece of 12mo laid paper. Fourteen lines of text, beneath the date, with the two signatures in the right-hand margin. On aged and worn paper, with bottom right-hand corner worn away, slightly affecting both signatures, but with no apparent loss of text.

Three pages, 12mo, some staining, but text clear and complete. In asking your consideration of the claims of the Childrens' Aid Society a Branch of the Reformatory & Refuge Union of which I am the President, I am not seeking your help for a mere experiment but for work which has been in progress now for nearly forty years with marked success. By means of this Society large numbers of children have been rescued from criminal & vicious surroundings, from the almost certain fate of a future of dishonesty & vice, & have become honest & honourable men & women and useful members of society.

"Visitors Book // Institute of Child Psychology"), dec. eps,good condition, c.92pp. used (others blank), c.1200 signatures with addresses of child psychologists, clinic and university doctors and other interested parties from around the world (France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Pakistan, India, etc), presumably ranging from the distinguished to the humble toiler in the field. Among the signatories are Serge Lebovici, Tina Keller, Therese Merzbach, E.

Dimensions roughly nineteen inches by thirteen inches. Aged and a tad grubby, but in very good condition overall. Small piece, roughly one inch square, cut away from bottom left hand corner. Government five shilling stamp in top left-hand corner.

4to: 2 pages. 37 lines of text. Text clear and entire on slightly discoloured paper, lightly worn and creased and with a few nicks to extremities. Signed properly on the second page. Place's essay, apparently a biographical account of the psychological development of a very young child, 'whiled [sic] away a long train journey last night very pleasantly'.

Clearly assembled by an enthusiastic collector or dealer-collector (possibly - from an inscription reproduced below - Harold Child, writer?). While the title-leaves and prelims are in variable condition there is no evidence that the prints, which are for the most part very well preserved, have been removed from volumes. The number of duplicates (as many as five copies of the same item) would indicate that this is unlikely, and it is probable that they were acquired separately. The box, measuring 31 x 24 x 5 cm, is half bound in brown cloth with worn leather spine, on which 'VOL.

8vo, 4 pp, paginated [605] to 608. Disbound bifolium. Two stab holes. Good, on lightly aged paper, with slight loss along crease line. A piece of landmark legislation in the field of employment rights. 'And be it enacted, That [...] any Person who shall compel or knowingly allow any Child or young Person under the Age of Twenty-one Years to ascend or descend a Chimney, or enter a Flue, for the Purpose of sweeping, cleaning, or coring the same, or for extinguishing Fire therein, shall be liable to a Penalty not more than Ten Pounds or less than Five Pounds.'

On piece of paper roughly seven inches by four and a half. Good, though aged, and with small closed tear at foot. Evidence of previous mounting adhering to blank verso. Presumably in response to a request for an autograph. Seven lines of text, headed 'The "Half-Timer"', concerning the deleterious effects on health of child labour.

Second baronet (1843-1911), politician and author. Three pages, 12mo. In good condition although grubby and with a few stains. 'My Coal Mines Prevention of Child Labour Underground Bill grew out of the Eight Hours debate and a challenge to the Coal Owners, so I did not put metalliferous mines in, and excluded them by any title. There are very few boys under 13 in them, but the principle might be the same'. He has been consulted on the matter by the Home Office, and has spoken to Lord Grey about it.

Wilshere (1804-67) was M.P. for Great Yarmouth William, MP for Great Yarmouth between 1837 and 1846). The notice: 2 pages, 4to. In very good condition despite minor spotting and two closed tears caused by folding. The letter: 1 page, 8vo. In very good condition. The envelope (addressed to 'W. Wilshere Esqr. M. P. | 12 Stratton Street | Piccadilly | London') in very good condition with red wax lion seal and postmarks. Postage stamps removed. The letter urges Wilshere to 'support the view of the Case of of [sic] the Silk trade taken by the writer Mr Ambrose Moore'.
