Autograph additions throughout, including some on the endpapers, in pencil and black and turquoise ink. Also present are two pages of typewritten additions at the start of the book, regarding the 'Probable Origin of the Name Brentford', on both sides of an inserted 12mo leaf, on which printed slips of paper from p.3 of the book are also laid down.

Ticket printed on one side of an 8 x 7 cm piece of paper. In fair condition, with closed tear at head and slight damage to bottom right-hand corner. Printed within a decorative border and reading (with manuscript additions in square brackets): 'No [93 - 4] | This Book is the Property of the Brentford Mechanics' Institution. | It must not be kept longer than [14] days. If kept longer than the time specified the Fine of One Penny will be charged for the first fortnight, and an additional Penny for every succeeding week.

The collection is in fair overall condition, on aged and worn paper. Not all from the same source (includes stamps of W. H. Smith & Son, Bromley; the Pioneer Bookshop, Woolwich; and Ascroft and Daw of the Charing Cross Road). ONE: 'November Penguins | published 29 October 1954'. Illustrated fold-out pamphlet. TWO: 3 issues of 'Penguin Books | Order Form', December 1954, August 1958, and October 1958. Fold-out leaflets. The December 1954 issue (creased, as is one other) features a full-page illustrated Christmas message. THREE: 'The New Penguins | ready 27 October 1955'.

On one side of a skin of vellum (roughly 42 x 58 cm). In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Ruled with red lines, and with ornate initial capital and decorative pattern at head. In English. Signature cut away from gutter and tab removed. The document relates to eight messuages in the Parish of St Clement Danes, Middlesex; three messuages and lands in Penzance, Penryn, Madron, Gwendron, Mave, Gluvias, Scancrett and Grade, in Cornwall; and lands in Wilmston and Tavistock, Devon. Scan on application.

Both parts in fair condition, with light signs of age; the second part with creased corner causing damage to the last couple of leaves and back cover. Two stapled pamphlets, uniform in grey printed wraps. PART I. 'Stone Age to 8th Century A.D. | Illustrated.' [4] + 13pp., 4to. Frontispiece and two full-page illustrations, with two more illustrations in text. Inscribed on front cover 'With the author's best wishes | Xmas 1921'. PART II. 47 + [1]pp., 12mo. Stapled. In brown printed wraps. Signed on the last page of text (p.45) 'Hbt Broome | May 1930', beneath the signature in type 'HERBERT BROOME, | March, 1930.' In fair condition, on aged and stained paper.

The fifteen items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The minutes are 5pp., foolscap 8vo, and are docketted: '8. Augt 1850 | Lunatic Asylum | Minutes of Comee | To be entd. in Minute Book inserting in their places Papers 1. 2. & 3.' The document is headed: 'At a Meeting held pursuant to adjournmt at the Asylum on Thursday the 8th. of August 1850. | Present, John Wilks Esqre, in the Chair | George Baillie Esqre | Marlbrorough Pryor Esqre | Thomas Russell Esqre | John Townend Esqre | Walter Buchanan Esqre | Valentine Knight Esqre | Henry Warner Esqre | Benjn. Mo.

In his history of the school Christopher Tyerman points out that Laborde came to Harrow in 1919 after Colonial Service employment as a Head Master in Fiji.

3pp., 12mo. With mourning border. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-creased paper. The lower part of the second leaf has been cut away, not affecting the text. He begins by stating that he has received the recipient's 'last telegram announcing that you had postponed till to morrow your visit to London'. He has in turn telegraphed 'Mr. Benzon to propose to him to come to the Charing Cross Hotel at 11 or 12. In that case I would offer to yourself & Mr. Benson [sic] a breakfast at the Hotel'.

1p., 4to. 22 lines of text. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf: 'To Richard Bulstrode Esqr at Littelton near Sunbury in Midd[lese]x'. In good condition, on aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Son' from 'Yr most affectionate Father | Whit: Bulstrode'. Bulstrode writes that, on his 'comeing to Towne', he 'met wth a letter from one Mr James Norris, who writes himself Auditor, &, it is fro ye Chapr at Canterbury', sending for the rent 'Due last month'.

1p., 4to. 12 lines, in close, neat hand. Good, on aged paper. He received Brett-James's paper that day, and 'read it through all except some of the statistics'. He discusses the 'exceptional' nature of Middlesex, college maps and the difference between the estates held in Hendon and Edgware by Alls Souls College, and 'some of our Midland estates'. In the second paragraph he comments on 'letting values in Tudor times', 'the effect of the depreciation of coinage' and 'the awful meddling with currency between 1543 and 1548'.

8vo, 136 pp. The original sheets of the second edition of 1812, in purple wraps printed in 1920. Text clear and complete. Grubby, on aged paper, with top edge badly trimmed; wraps creased. Excessively scarce: the only copy of this 1812 second edition on COPAC at University College London (like this copy with 'Caption [sic] title'). The accompanying card, with London postmark of 9 March 1938, is addressed to the printer of the wraps, 'Mr J. M. Stitt | Clock House Lane | Ashford | Mddx | "Clock House Press". It consists of 25 lines written with the postcard turned to portrait shape.

4to: 1 p. On grubby, aged paper, with crease to one corner. Laid down on a leaf removed from an autograph album. Thanking the recipient for 'selling Roses in the Middlesex Hospital Area' on 'Alexandra Rose Day'. 'The total sum collected in our Area amounted to £680. 10s. 6d. which is most satisfactory, and I do hope you will feel rewarded for your trouble and fatigue by this very gratifying result.' Docketed at foot 'Viscount Astor'.

1 page, 8vo. Paper discoloured with age, with minor creasing and small closed tears, but in good condition overall. Stamped ('G. A. M.' and '28 JAN 1918') in purple ink and numbered ('352') in red pencil. Tight neat handwriting. He has been moved to write by a passage in Walter Jerrold's 'Highways and Byways in Middlesex', relating to the railings at New College, Oxford. He asks if his letter and that of 'a New College Friend who was in residence about 1887' (the latter not present) might be forwarded to Jerrold.
