The letter begins: 'I have in hand the production of a film somewhat of a national character, including all the episodes in the reigns of our Royal Family, from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee onwards, and I thought it would be a very nice idea to finish the film with a short length of little Princess Elizabeth.

Typed title on cover, with circular red label of 'British and Continental Plays Ltd'. The main characters include the unnamed members of a continental royal family, together with 'Baroness Sibyl Konigsmark' and 'Section-Leader Grumb', and the scene is set at an Old Castle and Summer Palace, and 'Late in June of the year 1941. Three o'clock p.m.' and periods shortly following.

Printed brown-paper 19 x 25 cm landscape folder, containing 30 black and white captioned photographs of buildings featuring the firm's doors, on 30 leaves of shiny art paper, loosely inserted. The folder and items all have three punch holes at the spine, and there are the remains of the brown ribbon that bound them together. The 30 leaves are in good condition, lightly-worn, in worn and stained folder. 26 different photographs, and a further 4 duplicates. The captions consist of headings (such as 'Residence of H. G.

The large and unusual letterhead is the point of interest: it is roughly 17 x 11.5 cm, and mostly taken up with an illustration, printed in red, yellow, green, blue, orange and black, depicting an idealised scene in a Victorian bookseller's shop, with a young lady with bonnet and parasol, two schoolboys in top hats with Eton collars and a bespectackled master in mortar board and robes, the last of whom is examining a book shown to him by an elderly bookseller.

The collection is in fair overall condition, on aged and worn paper. Not all from the same source (includes stamps of W. H. Smith & Son, Bromley; the Pioneer Bookshop, Woolwich; and Ascroft and Daw of the Charing Cross Road). ONE: 'November Penguins | published 29 October 1954'. Illustrated fold-out pamphlet. The collection in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The eleven items range in size from 38 x 26 cm to 22.5 x 21.5 cm. Six with the stamp of the firm's London distributor, A. R. Ware of 35 Paternoster Row. Three circulars (totalling 4pp., 4to), all on the firm's green letterhead, include one duplicated letter, with the cyclostyled signature of Robert Hill, all headed 'Picture Boards, Toy Books and Annuals'.

The cover (with a central photograph depicting the covers of eight titles) is headed: 'Order Form. | A New Series of Children's Toy Books. | The Publishers offer in this new series one of the most striking and original Coloured Toy Books ever published. Charles Harry Lawrence (hereafter CHL) was perhaps the finest gunmaker of the twentieth century. At the age of 14 he joined James Purdey & Sons as an actioner's apprentice, and he remained with the firm for the rest of his life. For fifteen years, ending in 1970, he was the firm's managing director. He was twice (1954 and 1962) Master of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers, and was Chairman of the Proof House Committee for 27 years from 1954. Having previously received an MBE for his war work, he was awarded an OBE in 1978.

The collection of sixteen items is in good overall condition, on aged and worn paper. Includes: two lists of 'Messrs. Methuen's Sixpenny Books', one of them dated to 1908; lists for 1912, 1915, 1924 (two), 1934 (two: novels and 'new books'), 1939 (two: one in red of novels, and the other in blue of non-fiction). Also advertisements for: 'The Illustrated Pocket Library of Plain and Coloured Books'; 'The Heather Moon' by C. N. and A. M.

Items One and Two: Copies of the 'Book Gazette' (both 32pp., small 4to), numbered 8 (October 1896) and 16 (September 1901), and containing Announcements, Literary Notes, and extracts from publications. Two leaves of addenda tipped-in, the first, with text printed in red, headed 'Notice. - American Competition!'; the second carrying text and illustration of the '"Rhodes" "Excelsior" Treadle Guillotine Shear'.

It is Sir Basil Blackwell, in his DNB entry on Wilson, who described him as 'the most famous English [sic] bookseller of his time'. The freshness and enthusiasm conveyed by this small volume supports Blackwell's view that Wilson viewed 'bookselling not so much as a matter of retail trade as a service in which bookseller and customer met and shared the experience of contact with the precious manifestations of the spirit of man', as well as casting light on the methods and practices which made Wilson so successful.

Present as part of the photostat is the stamp '19 MAY 1960 | No. 14728' in the top left-hand corner of the first page, which also reproduces the four Inland Revenue tax stamps. Two attractive pieces of Dickens memorabilia, and tasteful examples of Victorian printing, by a firm one of whose partners (John Cheney) described himself on his calling card as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work'. ONE: Printed in gold on brownish-red marbled paper. Dimensions 26.5 x 30.5 cm. Consisting of the words 'The Works | of | Charles Dickens. | [short rule] | Pocket Volume Edition.' in large type, within a gold border, with 'Chapman & Hall, Lim.' in small type within the border at bottom left, and 'London.' at bottom right.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. Typed and duplicated on one leaf. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with fold lines. The Pakistan had been established on 14 August 1947, and Israel would be established from part of the British Mandate of Palestine on 14 May 1948. The present document is an interesting artefact of the changes in postal arrangements regarding these two regions at the time. The top half of the first page is headed 'Palestine', and the lower half 'Imports from the United Kingdom into Pakistan'. The reverse carries sections on 'Exports' and 'Imports'.

The three items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from Lytton to Keedick. 19 June 1914. 4pp., 12mo. On bifolium. He apologises for the delay in replying, caused by 'a bad attack of hay fever which has almost incapacitated me'. He regrets to say that 'it will be impossible for me to do what you wish namely to enter into a contract with you immediately to deliver 30 lectures in the U.S.A. & Canada next year about November, because it is possible that before that date I might obtain some work which would prevent me leaving this country'.

The bulk of Ross's papers is deposited in the Rhodes House Library at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The present collection derives from Ross's sister, Mrs Paterson.

Westley Richards & Co was established in 1813. In 1957 W. A. Clode bought the firm from Captain E. D. Barclay, and it remains within the hands of the Clode family today.

Three-page form relating to the firm's dealings with National Provincial Bank of England, filled-in and signed on behalf of the company by the secretary Henry A Burnell, dated July 1904. The minutes are in a number of different hands (beginning with Burnell's) and signed by a number of different chairmen.
