He is enclosing a letter from 'Dr Braun in Rome', and suggests that Smyth will be able to correct the translation. 'I am sorry Dr Braun is not more successful, but he has zeal in the Cause, & will not lose an opportunity.' TWO: 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with remains of mount on blank page. A letter of condolence on the death of Smyth's tenth child, Caroline Mary Smyth (1834-1859).

3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. And interesting and informative letter from a long-established couple of English settlers in Australia, to their kin in England. They have been prompted to write after viewing 'a Fox Short showing Bathing at Southend, Eastbourne, Bognor, Brighton and Blackpool taken during the Easter Holidays when you had a remarkable warm spell. To make it even we had a vicious little cold spell descend at the beginning of April [...]'.

3pp., folio. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper. Docketed on reverse of second leaf and addressed to 'Mr. Robert Park | Writer in | Glasgow', with postmark in red ink. The first page is headed 'Edinburgh within John's Coffee House the fifteenth day of December One thousand Seven hundred and Eighty six Years. | Siderunt of the committee respecting the Attorney Tax Law.' The minutes end at the top half of the third page, and a followed on the lower part of the same page by Sprott's covering note, written by a secretary and signed by him with short autograph postscript.

Frontispiece facsimile of the first page of the 'draft of contract for Woodrow Wilson's History of the United States - to be sold with six letters relating thereto, each signed by him'. In printed wraps. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. 949 lots, from a 1758 letter from James Abercrombie, Commander of the British Forces in America, to an 1899 letter from the Prince de Yturbide. Includes full-page facsimile of 'last page John Adams' fine letter on independence', and half-page facsimile of 'last page Roosevelt's letter on the management of Congress'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Recipient not named: addressed to 'Dear Sir'. She is sending 'one line' to tell him 'how greatly all of us like the window, which was put up in the Church according to your promise before Easter Day'. She praises the 'beauty & harmony of colour', and the 'noble religious dignity of the principal figures' of the window, with 'the careful delicate treatment of every detail'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed: '20 August 1835 | Lord Auckland to R L'. Reads 'Lord Auckland would be much obliged to Mr Lambert if he would call here tomorrow soon after two o'clock -'.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, despite slight singeing to extremities. He is sorry to hear of the recipient's 'uneasienes', and that he is unable to attend on him, as he is 'oblidged to goe sie the Lady Mackerston's daughter in the afternoon'. If he can, he will wait on him on the following morning, as he suspects there may be 'a tendency to your Ague'.

The collection is in fair condition, with the photographs in good condition, and the other items showing some signs of age and wear. The four printed programmes are all bifoliums. ONE: Programme for a School House and Galpin's performance of R. F. Delderfield's 'Worm's Eye View', 12 March 1955. Signed by sixteen members of the cast, including Budgen. TWO: Programme for a King's School Players performance of Romeo and Juliet, 16 to 23 July 1955. Signed by five members of the cast.

Page with reference at foot: 'SCHEDULE.ACC 28 Aug 95', headed with printed list, divided into four sections: 'Completed' (5 items beginning with 'Message to Future Mars Colonists (Video: Russian Lander, 96)'), 'Contracted' (5 items beginning with 'S.E. Asia Information Conference (Keynote: Colombo 5 Sept)'), 'Optioned' (5 items beginning with 'The Hammer of God (Spielberg, Zanuck, Brown - Paramount)'), and 'Under Discussion' (7 items beginning with 'Telecom 95 (ITU, Geneva 3-11 Oct)'). Clarke's autograph note reads: 'Dear Malcolm [sic] - photo herewith!

1p., 16mo. In good condition, lightly aged and spotted. Since she is going away, he considers it 'safer' to return the 'Oedipus', which has given him great pleasure. He hopes she will enjoy her 'Freshwater outing', and that 'we may remain above the horizon to welcome your return to town'. The Freshfields were a noted family of solicitors, with strong connections with the Bank of England.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged and spotted paper. Written in a close and difficult hand. He begins by apologising for a mistake in his 'account of St Bees', before turning to a paper by him, which he states - adding 'This is private.' - has been corrected by the Dean of St Pauls and Bishop of Truro. He discusses existing text books for theological and clerical subjects, praising R. Denny Urlin's 'Legal Guide for the Clergy', 'which packs into ninety pages of large type all that the ordinary curate need know'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with thin strip from previous mount. The letter begins: 'Sir, | I had the honor (a great one) of being presented to you, by Lord Palmerston, and of meeting you at the house of Mr Ellis.' As he was received 'with so much kindness', he ventures to ask the favour of being allowed to be 'present in the Chamber of Deputies, to hear the debate on the address', which he considers 'a discussion of so much interest'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. In regard to the recipient's 'Memo', he writes that it is 'difficult to define the exact scope of these <?> of Irish Legal Customs'. He cannot help him with 'anything brief', and 'details are of course out of the question'.

34 lines of typed text on air mail letter on blue paper. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed to Malcom at Paisley, Renfrewshire.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper, with slight show-through on first leaf. Expressing, 'on behalf of the Eagle Committee', a 'joint sense' of Powell's 'kindly interest in the magazine', whose 'circulation, hitherto, has been restricted to members of the College'. Powell's 'helpful offer' will be considered that week, when his letter is laid before the committee, who are desirous of inserting, 'more systematically, intelligence respecting members of the College in London'.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Replying to the recipient's 'very natural & proper inquiries', he discusses the granting of the 'honorary Degree of M.A.', which is 'often granted by our best colleges, to professors & men, known to those who nominate, on evidence of attainments equivalent to what is demanded for the same degree in course [...] No respectable College could confer the M.A. - in view of mere theological qualifications'. He discusses the length of time spent studying theology at Kenyon College, adding 'In absence - I think you wod.

2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Addressed to 'Rev. C. J. Wilding | Hartley Vicarage, | Bewdley.' Setting out his view that 'any property belonging to the Church in Edward the Fourth's timee became public property on the transfer to the nation by Henry the Eighth at the Reformation', with reference to the 'Gift or Settlement of 1675'. He concludes: 'I should reply to your question "Would you disendow a living thus endowed"? - No.'

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper. Written in a difficult hand as befits a medical practiioner. The reference reads: 'I have much pleasure in giving a testimonial in favour of my assistant Mr. Crawford. He is a good assistant and a pleasant man to work with and is well qualified in all branches of medical work. He is also thoroughly acquainted with the modern development of surgery.'?>

Printed in black ink on one side of a 14 x 11 cm piece of wove paper. At the foot, in blue ink, is a good firm signature: 'E. Nesbit | 1921.' Above a central engraving of the façade of the Cathedral is written in stylised lettering: 'THE RECONSTRUCTION OF RHEIMS CATHEDRAL AS A MEMORIAL TO THE ALLIED FALLEN'. Beneath the illustration is printed, in conventional lettering: 'May France and the British Empire ever walk side by side in the paths of Peace!' Restoration of the cathedral began in 1919, and is still in progress.

Church was a leading authority on the chemistry of paintings. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition. Written in a neat and close hand in the spirit of a true antiquary. Addressed to 'My dear Friend'. He begins by discussing Roman coins ('by no means rare even when in good condition'), describing 'two gold Neros' in his possession, and 'aurei of Galba', before turning to his activitiies since leaving Cirencester. He has not been 'working at Britanno-Roman things', but has been through 'some very interesting specimens belonging to Mr. T. B.

1p., 4to. On aged and worn paper. Ornate letterhead featuring Prince of Wales feathers and motto 'Patronised by his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales', reading 'Vance's Concert Party, | Annual Tour. | Proprietor & Manager, | Mr. Alfred G. Vance.' The 'Route' for the following Wednesday to Saturday is given as 'Newcastle on Tyne'. He asks that a 'Parcel of bills' which have been 'addressed to your House' be given to 'the principal Bill Poster to Post immediately', his agent to go over the following day.

Neatly written out on one side of a stamped, postmarked postcard, the other side addressed by Wright to 'Miss Alice A. Leith | 10 C<?> Gardens | London | N.W 3'. He is 'very pressed with work', and refers her to his 'Life of Blake', which 'gives all I know respecting Blake's attitude to Bacon - or Coban (altering the letters) as he sometimes calls Bacon'.

Both items in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: Copy letter. 2pp., folio. On paper with watermark 'JOHN HOWARD | 1804'. Ends: 'To | Sir J. T. Duckworth K.B. | Vice Admiral of the White | &ca. &ca. &ca. | Given on board the Ocean off Cadiz | 12th. August 1806 | (signed) Collingwood | By Command of the Vice Admiral | (signed) W R Cosway | A Copy -'.

1p., 12mo. In stamped envelope addressed by Wood to 'J. T. Baron Esq | 18 Griffin St | Witton | Blackburn'. Writing in 'greatest haste' he explains that he does not know the address of the writer George Macdonald (1824-1905). 'If you address to him at Messrs Isbister & Co 56 Ludgate Hill, the letter will probably reach him'.

1p., 12mo. On bifolium. In very good condition. Having asked Thorp's son to ask him to 'turn this' in his mind, he writes again on behalf of the Duke, who would like 'the names of such gentry, as might be made Depy. Lieuts. Mr. Adamson complaining of their want at Hexcham - Avonlea - & some other places'. The only name that Smith can recollect is that of 'Mr. Mitford, of Mitford Castle, who is desirous of acting'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with negligible traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the leaf. Addressed to 'Dr Clarke | Harper St.' After explaining that the Commissioners of the Public Records want lists of the new plates for the first volume of 'Foeder', and another list of 'the old ones necessary to be re engraved', reminds him that he promised the latter list 'in September last'.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter is 2pp., 4to, and is written in a playful tone. Escaping the accompanying spoof Steward writes: 'Your remark that Glasgow was as alien to you as Mars got me thinking along the lines of the attached headline . . . . . It would be a good idea for a story if it hadnt been done about three thousand times already (See Robert Bloch (Report on Sol III) and others).

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter, addressed to an unnamed recipient, begins: 'My dear Sir | Before I quitted Office I communicated to the Court of directors the Draft of an Insolvent Bill & some letters on the subject which I had received from the Judges in India, together with a request that they might be laid before you for your opinion & observations.' He should like the opportunity to talk over the subject with him, as he considers himself 'pledged to bring the measure forward [in the House of Commons]' with the approval of the present Board.

Good firm signature at foot of one side of 13.5 x 8.5cm card. The rest of the page is blank, and the reverse has printed text for a post card. In fair condition, aged and with negligible effect to signature from rectangle of slight browning on card perhaps caused by extended contact with newspaper cutting.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. In envelope addressed by Smith to Owston-Booth at Beckenham in Kent. She thanks her, explaining: 'I very seldom contribute [to] symposiums, and it is not possible for me to do so at present as I am exceedingly busy and am just arranging to go to America'. For the same reason she cannot arrange to see her either.
