Items 95-141: 'Signers of the Declaration of Independence and Presidents of the United States.' Scarce: no copy on COPAC, which does record one copy of a catalogue of a sale of Morrell's books by the same firm in 1866, and two copies of a catalogue of a further sale in 1869.

Octavo: 21 pp. Leaf of prices and buyers' names loosely inserted. Stapled. In original yellow printed wraps. Somewhat creased and chipped, on aged, spotted paper. Two-page foreword. Maggs were the main buyers, but the three highest sellers among the 105 lots, all Shelley letters, went to other dealers: lot 13, 'quoting 36 lines of original verse', for £155 to Pickering; lot 55, 'describing the origins and method of his elopement with Mary Godwin', £175 to Quaritch; lot 65, 'dealing with many topics', £360 to W. H. Robinson.

It includes Cortes, "Carta de Relacion" (1522), other important Americana, and the first edition of "Don Quixote".

Presentation copy, inscribed 'With Compliments from E U Maggs'. Covetable items, accurately described, from a complete set of Addison and Steele's 'Spectator' (£105) to the first edition of both volumes of Wordsworth's 'Lyrical Ballads' (£185). Contains 'twenty-four autograph letters signed [by Charles Dickens] on "The Village Coquettes" to John P. Hullah, the musical composer' (£650).

Quarto: xii + 168 pp. In original grey printed wraps. Numerous facsimiles. Printed order slip loosely inserted. Good, with grubby prelims and creasing to last few leaves at rear. Including a twenty-four page description of an 'extensive collection of Washington letters and documents [covering] every phase of his eventful life'. Participants named in the title: 'Cotton Mather, George Washington, William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Generals of the American Revolution, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Robert Fulton'.

Quarto: 65 pp. Numerous plates. In original grey printed wraps. Internally good, with a little spotting and creasing to the ruckled edges; wraps worn and stained. A beautifully printed item, on thick laid paper. Among the printed matter are books of hours, breviaries, psalters, and letters (with facsimile plates) by Byron, Keats, Johnson and Sterne; and manuscripts of Fielding and Horace Walpole.

Octavo: ii + 174 pp. Stitched. In original grey printed wraps. Internally clean and tight, in grubby and worn wraps. A first class catalogue, with excellent entries on items including letters and documents by Byron, Carlyle, Dickens, Disraeli, Edward Fitzgerald, Garibaldi, Pitt the Younger, Sir Walter Scott, Tennyson, Horace Walpole, George Washington. Fifteen books from the library of Mrs Piozzi.

Quarto: 28 pp. Unbound and stapled. Good, but with wear and discoloration to last leaf, and rust stains from staples. Illustrated catalogue of one of the leading firms of the period. Divided into seven sections: 'Fine Editions, Illustrated and Special Publications', 'Novels, Works of Fiction, &c.', 'Poetry and Standard Classical Literature', 'Technical, Reference and Miscellaneous Books', 'Juvenile Literature, Gift Books, &c.', 'Books for Little Folks and Toy Books for the Nursery' and 'Eveleigh Nash Co.'s Novels, Bartholomew Maps, &c.

Octavo: 18 pp. Unbound: stabbed and unstitched. First leaf and leaves with pp. 15/16 and 17/18 loose. Leaves with pp.3/4 and 15/16 half-separated. Paper discoloured and chipping at edges. Extends to 918 lots. The odd number of leaves implies the loss of a final leaf, possibly bearing text. Stamp of the Public Library Ford Collection. Docketing in pencil notes a duplicate at the New York Public Library. No other copy traced.

Octavo: 32 pp. Stapled and unbound. Rather worn, particularly at first and last leaves. A few pencil marks and notes, and slight ink staining at head of first leaf. Twenty illustrations. 168 items; three-part index on final page. Influential catalogue, the collection sold in its entirety to Duke University. One of Birrell & Garnett's managers was Graham Pollard, co-author of the book which unmasked T. J. Wise as a forger.

all octavo, in worn nineteenth-century binding, with front hinge loose. New endpapers. All items good, on aged paper with occasional foxing. An invaluable collection, providing a snapshot of secondhand bookselling in provincial Victorian England within an extremely short timescale. Several of the booksellers are not represented in the British Library collection, and others are only represented by catalogues of a later date. Of note are the two catalogues published by Sotheran's Manchester arm, the existence of which is not mentioned in Andrew Block's 'Short History' (1933).

Eighteen pages, octavo, with four plates on art paper. In original grey printed wraps. Some light staining, creasing and wear. One of 600 copies. Lists seventy-seven items, with addenda of a further eleven. This milestone catalogue was published, according to Sims (A Life in Catalogues, 1994), in May 1949. At foot of title-page: 'N.B. This collection, with the exception of the Addenda of Books, has been sold.'

Dimensions roughly eight inches by five and a half. Very good on aged paper. All but top edge rough. One page, blank reverse.

Verso of last leaf headed 'from CONSTABLE'S BIBLIOGRAPHICAL LIST', comprising 'THE CARTER-POLLARD DISCLOSURES', 'BIBLIOGRAPHIA SERIES' and 'DORMY HOUSE CATALOGUES'.

All items octavo. All in good condition, on aged paper, bound together in heavily-worn contemporary half-calf. Ownership inscription of the art dealer Faris C. Pitt on front free endpaper. The various issues of the 'Catalogue of Books' vary in length from eight pages to twenty-eight.

In extremely poor condition: grubby, creased and stained, with several closed tears and damage involving loss, particularly to the first leaf, the heading of which has been cut away, so that the name of the firm can only be deduced from the illustrations. There are 27 steel-engravings of various vehicles, of which 5 on the first leaf have been seriously damaged. Details, including prices, are given for each vehicle.

CATALOGUE: Six unpaginated leaves, 8vo. Diagonal blue stripe printed on front and back covers. Unbound. In very good condition despite slight rust staining from staples and paper clip. The prices fetched and purchasers of the thirty-five lots are given in pencil. LETTER: one page, 4to, in very good condition with crease to one corner. Encloses marked copy of catalogue, asks to subscribe to Polo Monthly, and commends article in latest issue. Signed 'William Post & Son | pr Fred H Post'.

In very good condition, one vertical crease from catalogue being folded on itself, and with negligible rust staining from staple. The sale comprised 'Lady's and Gentleman's Single, Tandem, Roadster and Road Racer Safeties, Including Osmonds, Humbers, Simpsons, Acatenes, Royal Psychos, Popular Starleys, Premiers, Cameos, Raglans, Olympic, &c., &c.', sold on behalf of 'Mr. PERCY L. YOUNG'. Front wrap headed 'Priced Catalogue' in manuscript 'CONDITIONS OF SALE' on verso of front wrap.

The actor Edward Alleyn (1566-1626; DNB) was the founder of Dulwich College, to which he bequeathed his library. 8vo. Pages: viii + 586. Leather half-binding, rubbed and worn, but a tight copy. Internally in very good condition, sound and with minimal spotting. Library stamp of 'LAMBETH ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT' on fly-leaf, and 'MINET PUBLIC LIBRARY' on verso of title. Attractively printed, with the Library's crest on the title-page.
