The envelope is 27.5 x 12.5 cm, and the cartoon is printed lengthwise (around 15cm long including caption) on the front in brown ink, with facsimile signature. In good condition, lightly-aged and worn, with the flap of the apparently-empty envelope gummed back into place. The stamp is attached in its customary place, with the address in Thomas's autograph beneath it: 'Wm. Booth Esq | The Rosery | Cambridge Rd. | Felixstowe'. Thomas's original cartoon had been drawn in ten minutes for the Weekly Dispatch 'Smokes for Tommy' campaign.

Both items are excessively scarce: with no copy of either in the British Library, on COPAC or WorldCat. Both of the present copies carry the stamps, labels and shelfmarks of the Board of Education Library. Surprisingly little appears to have been written about the public baths at 12 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh; with no references to it on the Scottish Archives Network. There is however an informative reference to the subject in Francis H. Groome's 'Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland' (1884): 'Good public baths, of various kinds and various extent, for the upper and the middle classes, are in several parts both of the city and its environs. Public baths for the working classes were long a desideratum, though earnestly desired by many of the working classes themselves.

After thanking him for his assistant Stuart informs Moore that he is 'delaying a further approach to the Council until you tell me that the new Provost has been appointed and you have been able to make unofficial approaches to him about a Deputation meeting me in Edinburgh'. Annotated in pencil by Moore.

The seven items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Strong's two letters are each 1p., 8vo, and are both on thin paper with slight wear to the edges; the second letter is docketed on the reverse by Bourne. In his first letter Strong congratulates Bourne on 'the new journal "The Environment This Month"'. He was 'favourably impressed with the first issue' and congratulates Bourne 'on the initiative you have taken in filling in such a promising way the need which existed for a high quality international journal on environmental affairs'.

An abridged abstract of this item, by 'Mr. Tallack', appeared in the Social Science Review, N.S. Vol.2 (July-December 1864), pp.421-422, but the present full version of the address, as delivered, is unpublished. 3pp., foolscap 8vo. On three leaves of laid Britannia paper by Conqueror of London. Held together with a brass stud, and with the last leaf laid down on a page removed from an album. With a few manuscript corrections. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The address is written in a vivid but not entirely coherent style, and begins: 'I have been invited by the Secretary, G. H.

You have suffered a long and bitter ordeal at the hands of a barbarous enemy. | You have never been out of our thoughts and we now know, as we had always expected, that you have borne the ordeal with the spirit of your race. | That experience is now past and freedom is yours again.

The third page carries an 'Index to Music', at the end of which the address in the following - 'Copies of the Music may be obtained at 7, Harpur Street, London, W.C., Price 2s.' - has been altered in manuscript to 'from Miss C. E. Few | Shalford | Guildford'. Excessively scarce: no copies on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

Stapled and unbound. In good condition, with stamp and shelfmarks of the Board of Education Library. Three perforated leaves, carrying the 'College Entrance Form' (as described above), 'Hall Entrance Form for Resident Women Students' and 'Entrance Certificate | To be signed by a qualified medical man.' The 'Rules and Regulations' are on pp.3-6, and include '5.

He thanks Hodson for his letter, explaining that the last meeting of the Committee before the vacation was held on the previous day, but that he will 'write to Mr. Ansell in accordance with your suggestion'. He is indebted to Hodson for his offer of assistance. He will be grateful if Hodson can 'get in touch with Mr. Dangerfield and can suggest his asking the Society for its opinion'. Hodson was a wealthy brewer and patron of the Arts and Crafts movement.

According to the introduction 'Bert Bensen's account of his attempts to stay in Britain - and of the determination of two successive Home Secretaries that he shall not - reads like something out of Kafka. FORD', with a design with in a pink border depicting the book with its bright red cover illustrated in gilt.

The collection is in very good condition, lightly-aged, and with only a handful of items with light damp staining. 60 issues of Peking Review ('A weekly magazine of Chinese news and views') between 4 January 1963 and 17 December 1965, comprising 17 issues from 1963, between no. 1 (4 January) and no. 25 (21 June); one issue from 1964 (no. 49, 4 December); 42 issues from 1965, between no. 6 (5 February) and no. 51 (17 December). Accompanying the issues are two of the air mail envelopes in which the magazine was sent to Basil Stein in London from China by distributors Guozi Shudian.

Placed within a 35 x 45.5 cm frame, with 25 x 35.5 cm window. In good condition, with unobtrusive 2.5cm closed tear at head. Dimensions of image 34 x 22 cm, with engraved caption beneath: 'A PARLIAMENTARY EXAMINATION TOUCHING CERTAIN CURIOSITIES IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM', and 'MC.LEANS MONTHLY SHEET OF CARICATURES NO. 41' running up the left-hand side of the border.
