He suggests a date, 'as being the farthest off & giving time generally', but if another is preferable, he 'can attend'. If Macgowan 'will fix the day and let know [sic] - (in case Monday is a bad day)', he will 'follow your decision'.

2pp., 4to. 51 lines of text. On brittle, discoloured paper, with closed tears and slight loss at foot, including the signature. In September 1826 Hartshorne had returned to England from a tour of the continent with the Earl of Guildford, to find that rumours were circulating that he had been engaged in a homosexual liaison with Richard Heber. In December 1828 he married Frances Margaretta Kerrich.

1p., 12mo. On aged and creased paper, with discoloration to one edge affecting a few words of text. Names of the club president, captain, vice-captain and members of the committee are given at the head, followed by Tozer's circular letter, discussing the AGM to be held at the Traveller's Rest Inn, Woodford Wells.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with remains of stub adhering to margin on reverse of leaf. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | I got as far as Charing Cross last night on my way to you - when horrified by the lateness of the Hour, I did not venture to put in an Appearance & turned Homeward. -' He concludes by inviting him to a dinner at the East India Club, 14 St James's Square.

On one side of an 8 x 21 cm slip of laid paper. Embossed with 3d tax receipt. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Nicely printed in gothic type. Reads, with the manuscript portion in square brackets: 'Received from [The Count de Flahault] the Sum of Five Guineas, being his Subscription to the Bannatyne Club for the Current Year, 1827. | [Thos. Kinnear.] Treasurer. | Edinburgh, 26th January, MDCCCXXVII.' Docketed on reverse: 'Count Flahault | 22 Septr. 1829. | Rec. Subscription | Bannatyne Club | For 1829. [sic] | £5. 5'.

10 printed items. In aged and worn condition, with seven items showing evidence of removal from an album and three items still attached to separated leaves from it. Comprising three card menus, five seating plans, a list of 'Resident Members' and a newspaper cutting. The Oxford New Tory Club was a university club to promote and discuss Tory principles, founded in 1861. Its records are in the Bodleian Library. ONE to THREE: menus for the years 1912, 1913 and 1914. Each a bifolium on card of 3pp., 12mo.

The two items are both on both sides of 8.5 x 11cm grey cards (the first gilt-edged). In good condition, lightly aged, with traces of mount adhering to one edge of each. ONE: From Redlands (of Rolling Stones fame). He begins: 'My dear Seymour | I enormously enjoyed your book [presumably 'If I were your Father' (1919): I've read it thrice! It's great fun, with an immense amount of real good sense: & it sparkles, Seymour, almost as much as you do when you stand on the <?> at the Garrick & let go at us!' He thanks him for sending the book, and hopes to see him at 'the Club' the following week.

Limited Edition, no.464 of 600, designed by John B. Goetz, glassine type wraps, sl. chipped, mainly fine. There is a calligraphic presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, "Presented to Anthony Rota [distinguished modern first dealer] on the occasion of the Septmber 28, 1988 meeting of the Caxton Club with the appreciation of the members and guests whose signatures appear below." There are 81 signatures, commencing with Charles [?] Cullen, David G. Hilliard and concluding with Harrison Hayford and an indecipherable.

Totalling 280pp., 8vo (each issue 20pp), with aditional grey card printed covers to issues 13 and 14. The first twelve issues are bound up, without covers, in a black leather half-binding with black cloth boards. As the covers are lacking it is only possible to date these issues from the gilt title on the spine: 'OUR OWN | 1913-6'. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper: 'Cecil Thom | 22 Nov. 1916.' (Henry E. Thom appears to have been a music teacher at the school.) Modern bookplate of John Gadd on front pastedown. Issues 13 (March 1917) and 14 (April 1919) are loosely inserted.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with damp tide mark across the two leaves. 92 lines of closely-written text, regarding Lynd's book 'Irish and English' (London: F. Griffiths, 1908). The letter begins: 'My dear Robert | I have purchased (please commend this virtuous action) and read your book "Irish and English" and now write to congratulate you on its quality. It has this, sections of it are quite admirable.

[8]pp., 16mo (10.5 x 8 cm). Stitched into card wraps. In very good condition. An attractive production, wtih the light-blue card covers printed in dark blue ink, with the club's device, featuring a lion on top of a wheel, embossed and printed in red. A list of names of the 'Executive' is inside the front cover. With the sixteen 'Rules' on the first two pages, and the other headings: 'Racing Fixtures', 'Executive Meetings', 'General Meetings'; the fourth page carries general notes.

11 x 7.5 cm. bifolium, with outer covers on shiny paper and inside matte. The cover printed in brown ink in fancy type within an attractive decorative border of gold and light-green. In very good condition. Cover reads: 'Banbury | Bowling Green Club | (The Chestnuts). | Dinner | at the | White Horse Hotel, | June 16th. 1896. | H. Busby, | Proprietor.' With 'Cheney, Banbury' in small type in bottom left-hand corner. Inside, the five-course menu commences with a choice of 'SALMON. CUCUMBER.' or 'FRIED SOLES.

Nicely printed on both sides of a piece of 11 x 15cm card, folded once to make an 11 x 7.5cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages, and the internal double-page opening in portrait. The outer covers are blue, with a cloth weave; the internal opening is matte white.

4pp., 16mo (11.5 x 7.5 cm). Bifolium. Printed in black, within decorative red borders, on all four sides, with the outer covers grey and the internal pages white. In very good condition. A tasteful production, with the 'Officers, &c.' on the front cover, the twelve 'Rules' on the second page; 'Club Runs' on the third page (fifteen of them, between Wroxton on Wednesday 8 June [1892] and South Newington via Milcombe on Friday 29 July [1892]. Small vignette of a frog on a penny farthing centred on the back cover.

Printed on both sides of a piece of 9 x 12.5 cm card, folded once to make a 9 x 6.25 cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages and the central opening a double-page spread. 4pp., 32mo (9 x 6.5cm). With shiny pink outer covers and matte white internal opening. In very good condition, very lightly aged. Tastefully printed, with the front cover within a decorative border, headed 'BANBURY | P.S.A. Cricket Club. | Season 1894.' and giving the names of the club officials, including Rev. H. Cubbon, President; Mr. Frank Lovegrove, Captain.

Both items in very good condition, lightly-aged. ONE: 16mo (11.5 x 8 cm) green-card bifolium, printed in blue, with engraving in gold of the 'Club Badge' on front cover. On cover, beneath the names of the patron (the Earl of Jersey) and officers: 'FOOTBALL. | Captain - J. G. COWPER. Sub-Captain - A. M. BARROWS. | Captain Second Team - W. MORRAY. | Sub-Captain Ditto - W. HEMMING. | COLOURS - BLUE & WHITE.

The ten items are in very good condition, lightly-aged. Six of the items (the three fixture lists and three of the certificates) carry slugs, with the printers' details not stated on the other four items. ONE to THREE: Three 16mo (10.5 x 7 cm) booklets, each of 8pp: 'Fixtures, 1890-91', 'Fixtures, 1891-92', 'Fixtures 1892-93'. Uniform in design, and attractively printed in green, blue and lilac card covers and papers, with the Club's crest embossed on each front cover in gold. Each pamphlet carries the following inside the front cover: 'Object.

42pp., 12mo. In cream printed illustrated wraps printed in green. The body of the magazine is paginated 53-85, with additional pages of advertisements at the front and back, and on the inside and back of the wraps. Aged, and with a little damp damage and rust to staples. From the Lynd archive, and with a full-page photographic portrait of 'Mrs. ROBERT LYND' on p.66. For the purposes of reproduction her daughter Maire Gaster has altered 'Mrs. ROBERT' to 'Sylvia' in pencil, and written 'Courtesy of MAIRE GASTER' at the head of the page.

Both items are scarce, with the only copies on COPAC (other than 'electronic resources') at the National Library of Scotland. ONE: 'The Watt Club. Instituted 1854. (Baron's method involved asking one celebrity how to contact another.) He next discusses two of his works: '"The Memorial Windows" appeared in the Gentleman's & was published in Pippins & Cheese (Bradbury & Evans) - "The Valley" you will see in enclosed list'. He concludes by thanking Baron for his 'complimentary note'. With envelope addressed to 'J. T.

8pp., 12mo. Stapled. Printed in blue on shiny art paper, in cream card wraps, also printed in blue, and tied with blue and white ribbon. On aged and worn paper. With illustrations in text, including a half-page image of the 'Pip, Squeak & Wilfred Jig-Saw Puzzle'. The first page carries a message to 'My Dear Boys and Girls' from 'Uncle Bill', including: 'To-day's Gugnunc Party - our third - is particularly interesting as it is also a birthday party.

A handsome production, as one might expect from one of the nine founders of the Grolier Club, with a two-page introduction followed by a full-page reproduction of the Ascensius printer's device, and 47 examples of pages set in various point sizes of Cushing, Ancient Roman, Jenson, Satanick, Louis XV, and Century Roman. No copy on COPAC, six American and one French on WorldCat.

At the foot of the final page is a list of 'Foundation Members' of the 'South African Branch Compatriots' Club'.
