FIELD MESSAGE BOOK: Landscape 8vo notebook with 43pp of manuscript, in a number of different hands (one of them apparently Grubbe's), including seven full-page maps, with two further pages of carbon copies, preceded by 3pp. of printed text titled 'Field Message Book / (For the use of Dismounted Regimental Officers and Non-commissioned Officers of Cavalry and Mounted Infantry.)' In pencil and ink on graph paper pages. In detachable brown cloth cover, with explanatory label ('Cover for Army Book 153').

Document, typed, three pages, sm. fol., good condition. A "Mr. Benoist" of 36 Piccadilly (where he provided luxury food: CUISINE, CHARCUTERIE ET COMESTIBLES "FRANCAISES, on behalf of the proprietors of the Grafton Galleries, facilitates the letting of the Galleries to "Messrs Montague Morris and V. Fodor of 12 Talbot House St Martin's Lane". The document is signed by Benoist as Director of the Galleries, and by "Montague & Fodor". Clause as follows: 1. & 2. agreement that "picture and Fine Art Exhibitions" allowed from 20 Oct. 1908 to 25 Dec.1908; 3.

The collection in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The eleven items range in size from 38 x 26 cm to 22.5 x 21.5 cm. Six with the stamp of the firm's London distributor, A. R. Ware of 35 Paternoster Row. Three circulars (totalling 4pp., 4to), all on the firm's green letterhead, include one duplicated letter, with the cyclostyled signature of Robert Hill, all headed 'Picture Boards, Toy Books and Annuals'.

36pp., 4to. With numerous illustrations of covers. Unbound and stapled. In fair condition, lightly-aged with rusted staples. Addendum, dated 2 July 1917, in red ink on label tipped-in onto front cover. Series include: 'Cecil Aldin's Fine Art Animal Books', 'E. J. Detmold's Colour Books', 'Herbert Strang's Empire Library', 'Mrs. Strang's Annual for Baby' and 'The Something to Do Series'.

Printed in black on one side of an 8.5 x 13.5 cm piece of blue paper. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with minor creasing to corners. Formerly an insert into a book, a nice piece of ephemera relating to one of the greatest English novels of the nineteenth century. 'Middlemarch' was first published in eight installments between 1871 and 1873, before its first complete publication in book form in 1874. No other copy of this item traced on either OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

24pp., 12mo. Yapp-bound in brown-paper printed wraps. Stapled. Very good. Printed in brown ink on glossy paper, with one book per page, each with an illustration of the cover. Begins with 'The Wonder Book | (Fourteenth Year of Issue.)' and ends with 'Animals All | By Ellen Velvin'. Includes four works illustrated by Margaret W. Tarrant, including 'Alices Adventures in Wonderland'. Scarce: no copies traced, either on COPAC or on OCLC WorldCat.

8pp., 4to. Illustrations of covers on every page. Stapled. In good condition, on aged paper, with rusted staples. The cover (with a central photograph depicting the covers of eight titles) is headed: 'Order Form. | A New Series of Children's Toy Books. | The Publishers offer in this new series one of the most striking and original Coloured Toy Books ever published. They will please little children. | These Toy Books will command an immediate sale in any part of the country. They are not expensive.' In right-hand margin of cover: 'A Selection of 49 Titles'.

A convincing copy of a genuine typed letter, with Milford's signature and the letterhead in black ink, and the typewritten text in purple. 25 lines of text in three paragraphs. An interesting glimpse into the state of the British publishing industry in the period immediately following the First World War.

27pp., 4to. Unbound. On thirteen bifoliums, and one loose leaf, formerly attached with string. Corner of first page embossed with small circle containing Prince of Wales feathers and words 'SUPERFINE SATIN'. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. Headed: 'Oporto 2d May 1793. | An Essay on Earthquakes occasioned by a most dreadful convulsion of Nature that was horribly felt here this morning. This is written from immediate feeling by a Father for his Children'.

15 x 21 cm print laid down on 17.5 x 23.5 cm piece of card. Faded and aged, with wear to extremities of card (not print) and staining to reverse. The men are posing in four rows, in front of a large window in a brick wall. They are hatless, and wear single-breasted jackets with seven gilt buttons at the front, with black belt and metal buckle. Four numbers embroidered on either side of collars. In the centre of the group is a sergeant. Most of the men sport moustaches, and many pomaded hair and centre partings. From the papers of the gunsmith C.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Clearly referring to his edition of Charles Lamb's letters, he begins by explaining that the 'trouble is that the size of the books will be conditioned by the circumstance that ultimately they are to go into Everyman's Library'. Even before his 'visit to America', he had assembled 'more than 250 in excess of any current edition'.

In two columns, on one side of piece of 50 x 30.5 cm paper. Aged and worn, with chipping and loss to margins. Two pencil notes in margin: 'this was ommitted [sic]' and 'the truth acquired mostly forgotten'. Clearly not intended for publication, and apparently the advice of a knowledgeable and well-educated man of scientific bent to his family, regarding the future of 'Charlie' (his grandson?). A reference to Clifton College may suggest a West Country origin. The piece begins: 'The subject of Education is in a great state of confusion, and great diversities of opinion exist about it.

Both transparencies negatives on plastic sheets. The two images attached by a thin vertical strip of Scotch tape. On the right (22 x 14.5 cm) the image of the ragamuffin boy fisherman, with net and rod, looking to the left. On the left (22 x 16.5 cm) his young sweetheart, with fishing nets aand lace apron, waving a lace handkerchief. His image with caption (old Breton poem): 'Dear God be good to me | The sea is so wide | And my boat is so small | Sold in aid of the R.N.L.I.' Her image with the same caption, but with the word 'his' replacing 'my'.

Eight witty and attractive caricatures, in a sub-Punch style. All eight in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Each in black ink on a separate piece of paper, five of them 33.5 x 21.5 cm, and three of them 21 x 17 cm. The context of the caricatures is at present obscure, but would undoubtedly make itself clear with specialist research. The five largest illustrations are: ONE: Caption: 'Please to remember | The twenty-seventh of November | The "Bilk-Powder" treason and plot'.

1p., folio. In three columns of small print, on a sheet of 37.5 x 23 cm paper. With three manuscript emendations. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with a couple of short closed tears at margins along folds. The present item is excessively scarce. There is no record of its existence on either OCLC WorldCat or COPAC, nor does it feature in Harold E. Raugh Jr's 'British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography' (2008). The document is anonymous, but its author is clearly an ADC, and there is a strong possibility that it was Lord Edward Cecil.

The four letters all in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE: 22 July 1902. 2pp., 12mo. Rearranging a meeting, following his absence 'at my cottage in Norfolk'. TWO: 6 August 1902. 3pp., 12mo. Regarding a drawing titled 'The little Chest', which 'Mr Macquarie' would like Slocombe to being at once. With postscript signed 'S. L.' THREE: 4 June 1904. 2pp., 12mo. He was 'on the point of writing', to ask when he could 'buy those delectable pipes', when Slocombe's 'most acceptable present' arrived. He ends by asking to be reminded to send him a 'soiree ticket'. FOUR: 1p., 12mo.

19pp., 12mo. Stapled. In grey printed wraps. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged paper; in wraps with stamp and label of the Education Department Library. Marginal headings include: 'Motives for following an Artistic Career', 'Primal Important of Facility of Hand', 'Triumph of Commercialism', 'The Worship of the Ugly', 'Art: Pictorial, Creative, Pot-boiling' and 'Decorum in Decoration'. Uncommon: only four copies recorded on OCLC WorldCat.

One page, 12mo, black border, speckled (foxing?) and smudged, text clear although hand difficult. She tahnks him for enquiries and tells him all are "fairly well". She has heard form a Mrs Coben that "Coben is very ill" and encourages him to visit him, giving him directions and expressing sympathy with the wife.

[3] + 306pp., 12m. In original printed grey cloth. In fair condition, on aged paper, in worn and damp-stained binding. Small ownership signature of 'Colonel Hag. R.A.' at head of title page, and stamp on front pastedown of booksellers 'Thacker & Co. Ld., Bombay.' Uncommon: only four copies recorded on COPAC. Forty essays published between 16 February and 5 December 1860. The main body (pp.1-248) consists of 33 essays of political gossip, under the same title as the book: 'Some Serious Reflections'. Essays 34 to 40 follow, separately listed in the 'Contents': 'The Teapot Series.

Around 190 items, fifteen of them loosely inserted. (The firm was already a century old at the time this material was assembled, boasting that it was 'established the year after Waterloo', 1816.) Contained within a sturdy album of grey paper (dimensions 48.5 x 33.5 cm.), stitched with string into covers with brown cloth spine. Label on front cover: 'ADVERTISEMENT FILE. | CHAS. THURNAM & SONS.' In manuscript on label: 'OLD MATTER | NOT TO BE DESTROYED'.

2pp., 8vo. 29 lines of neatly-written text. In fair condition, on aged paper, with two 5 cm closed tears to leaf. Addressed to 'My dear Marshall'. He regrets that his letter should contain 'so truly painful an account of the state of your family & affairs in the West Indies', but was 'glad to receive it, since after my last communication I was at a loss, not seeing you in Oxford, to explain your silence - I hope at some future occasion, I shall see you again under my roof'.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper, with repair to closed tears. He begins by thanking her for her acknowledgment of 'the humble services I had rendered you in preparing your son'. He praises the boy for '[h]is docility, endearing Manners and Gentlemanly Conduct', adding that '[h]e has very little now left to complete the course of instruction necessary for his Woolwich examination'. He will 'complete that course, on his return from Germany by three months' final training'. Other topics in the letter are her 'excursion', health, and an 'approaching trip'.

Printed in black ink on 8 x 12 cm piece of thick watermarked laid paper. In very good condition. Sims acquired the Gill archive from the artist's widow, and it seems likely that he had the illustration made from one of the artist's blocks. The illustration shows a bearded man in loincloth, trailing a sword along the ground as he runs from a tree. Printed beneath the illustration: 'With the compliments of | George Sims'. Above the illustration is typed 'for Tony & Jean', and below the printed text 'just before it was remaindered'.
