3pp., 16mo. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper, with closed tears to both leaves along fold lines, and glue from mount along inner margin of first page. He apologises for having to decline an invitation, having 'just told Lady Grey that I would call upon her to-night'. He would have liked to see her 'to ask your forgiveness for the many blunders I have committed to-day, tho' how to appear before you I really don't know'. He will attempt to 'throw' himself on her 'Good-nature' in a day or two, and concludes: 'I believe the debate in the Lords has confused my understanding'.

1p., 8vo. On aged paper worn at extremities (not affecting text). The note reads: 'Nov 6 1790 | Srs | I received your letter by cover of Mr Herbert & will have ye honour to return an answer on Wednesday next | & am your Obedt Humble Servant | Melbourne'.

1p., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter reads: 'Sir | It gives me sincere Pleasure to learn that The Information against you was quashed. The Offence charged, does not come either within The Letter or The Spirit of my Act. I am only vexed that you have had so much Trouble.' Taylor's connection with the Metropolitan Paving Act of 1817, led to it being referred to as 'Michael Angelo Taylor's Act', but it is unclear which act he is referring to in this letter.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Want of health induced me to retire from Parliament in opposition to the wishes of my kind constituents and hurrying me from Town as soon as my votes had been given for the Liberal candidates at the Kent Surrey Essex and Middlesex Elections - unavoidably deprived me of the interesting though mournful pleasure of attending your final lecture at Finsbury Chapel.

1p., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He thanks her for her review of his collection of children's stories 'The Spider's Palace' (1931). 'I wonder what London is like now. Here the sun is almost too fierce at midday to sit in: & the sea the clearest possible blue.'

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 'I've the vividest memory of starting at Bouverie St. 38 years ago, in 1911, & of the thrill of speaking to him (on the top corridor). The Abbey Co. was just then at the Court, so our enthusiasm about it & its works made two very shy people articulate! | Since then, how much real pleasure I've owed to him!! The News Chronicle will never quite seem the same again.'

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The first item in its envelope, addressed to 'Mrs. Robert Lynd | 14 Downshire Hill | Hampstead'. Both addressed to 'Mrs. Lynd.' ONE: 4pp., 4to. She begins by thanking Lynd 'for "The Chorus". I feel a wretch beyond redemption & there are not enough excuses in St. Ives to meet the case - I had to get those two big portraits finished & off to the Nat. Portrait Soc: & a nightmare of a time it was I thought - I would never pull them out of Hell's seventh Ditch and up to Bond St - but there they are it appears'. TWO: 4pp., 12mo.

ALS, on letterhead of Lochnagar, Bycullah Park, Enfield; 17 December 1912, 3pp., 12mo. He thanks him for the 'letter & all its encouragement [...] The book represents rather under a year's work at verse & I only hope I shall not someday have to wish it had never been other than firelight.

5 ALsS, total 8pp., 12mo.One, on letterhead of 4 Downside Crescent, Hampstead; 'Tuesday' [December 1908]. Concerning Nevinson's sacking as a Daily News journalist following his heckling of the Liberal Chancellor Lloyd George at a meeting in December 1908 in which the Daily News editor Gardiner was also on the platform (see L. J. Satre's Chocolate on Trial, Ohio University Press, 2005, pp.141-144). Begins: 'Yes, it's true enough. Gardiner sacked me directly after the meeting.

Printed personalised Christmas card, 9 x 11cm, of cartoon by Low depicting an irate Father Christmas announcing 'Gad, sir, something must be done about this Depression. Low must wish the Lynds | A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.' With TLS to RL. 3 Rodborough Road, Golders Green; 23 July 1940, 'Cartoon idea being digested and will issue soon.

ALS, on letterhead of the City Art Gallery, Leeds; 10 March 1916. He offers to review 'Rebecca West's forthcoming little book on "Henry James"', being 'particularly interested in both author & subject'. Asks for contact details of a relative of Walter Riddall's: 'I lent him before his death one of my "To-Day" volumes which I can't replace & don't want to lose.'

ALS, on letterhead of 4 Whitehall Court, London; 'Tuesday' [1924], in envelope, 2pp., 8vo. 'You know all sorts of useful things - can you tell me of any way of getting in touch with Mary Ansell - Mary Barrie - Mary Cannan - Mary? here my knowledge stops. [...] Are you "sitting under" Bernard Shaw evening after evening - as I believe is said of preachers? I am going to begin my course on Friday.'

3 ALsS, all on letterheads of Coombe Bissett, Salisbury; 27 April and 25 May 1947, and 11 Oct. 1949, total 5pp., 12mo and 8vo. The first letter begins 'My sister Dorothy has told me of your idea of having a drawing of your husband. I shall be pleased to undertake this, though I regard it as the most exacting branch of my trade.' Describes in detail what the process would entail. The second cancels a sitting, 'Owing to a muddle about the future to which I am especially liable'.

ALS, Bury House, Bury, nr Pulborough, Sussex; 12 Nov. 1932, good condition. 'We have been wondering what those delightful little noises we've been hearing about the house, were.'

One, Stansfield; 3 May 1922. Thanking RL for his praise of his new poetry book. 'I have as you may know been away on a tramp steamer [...] I am as yet a barbarian, unregenerate in literary matters, or I feel I should have much else from your pen to thank you for'. Two, Stansfield nr Clare, Suffolk; 1 July 'not 1916!' [i.e. 1922] Referring to 'the award & its lucky receiver' (i.e. Blunden). Three, Stansfield; 5 July 1922. Announcing the completion of a 'paper on Shelley' mentioned in the first letter. Four, Hawstead nr Bury St Edmunds; 19 June 1930.

ALS, on letterhead of 28 Mallord Street, Chelsea; 11 March 1923. Regarding an invitation, he cannot 'promise to come' as he is 'going to America very soon and in consequence my time is very crowded; - in addition, I am preparing for an exhibition at the end of the month'. With note by MG concerning the Lynd's home at 32 Queen's Gate.

The four engravings are arranged in two rows (the first two parts on the top row and the last two parts on the bottom row) on a sheet of 27 x 38 cm wove paper. Each engraving is 12 x 16 cm, within a light-blue frame, with the 'The Dancing Lesson - Pt. 1 [4]' beneath the image, and the subtitle above. Publisher's details in bottom right-hand corner, and Cruikshank's details at bottom left. (The first part has Cruikshank's monogram and 'Etchd by G Cruikk.', and the other three parts have 'G Cruikshank fect'.

On one side of piece of 31 x 25 cm shiny art paper. In fair condition, lightly aged, with wear at head and foot and vertical fold at right hand edge. Image undamaged. At head: 'THE FAUNA OF CAMBRIDGE. | With apologies to the Authors of "ANIMAL LAND," E.T.R., and the "GRANTA." | THE MYKE.' At foot: 'THIS wyse little animile nose all about what is going on inside, but he is very korshus when he tels you about it.

8pp., 4to. Stapled. In fair conditon, on aged and lightly creased paper, with slight damage to upper staple. Unillustrated: listing 100 works, with date and dimensions. Uncommon: no copy in the British Library, and six copies on COPAC and OCLC WorldCat.

118pp., 12mo. In original embossed black morocco leather binding, with marbled endpapers and edges. In good condition, lightly aged, in worn binding. Attributed in pencil on first page to 'H. G. S. de Zoete'.

4pp., 12mo. Paginated to 4. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. On laid paper watermarked 'A PIRIE & SONS | 1883'. Tastefully printed.

(Durham) | Born 13th June, 1893 | Died 17th December, 1957 | on Wednesday, 15th January, 1958 at 12.30 p.m.' The lessons were read by Val Gielgud and His Honour Judge Gordon Clark. Scarce: no copies recorded on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

33pp., 8vo. In brown printed wraps. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets, and with library stitching on spine. Aged and worn, with stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to damaged front cover. Covers and last leaf loose. 82 lots with unusually detailed descriptions. Mostly devoted to British artists, the collection included a Constable, couple of Turners, three Gainsboroughs and four by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC or WorldCat at Oxford.

On both sides of a rectangular (5.5 x 16.5 cm) strip cut from letter. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. Recto: '4 Brixton place | Brixton Surry [sic] | Janry: 12th. 1833 | Sir | M Mackenzie has conveyed to me y polite offier of allowing a few prospectus of my [...]'. Verso: 'to Dr. Tournay by my friend Dr Burney, but as your house is the rendezvous of all the learned & the rich in Oxford, perhaps it is unnecessary for me to solicit the onor of Dr Tournay's influence. | I remain, | [...]'.

20pp., 8vo. In lilac wraps, printed in black. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets, and with library stitching on spine. Aged and worn, with stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to damaged front cover. (The collection had been amassed by the cotton manufacturer Thomas Taylor, Mayor of Wigan, 1854-55, and was housed in his country house at Aston Rowant.) Around half the 94 lots priced in guineas and pounds in red ink. Includes work by John Linnell, J. W. Waterhouse, Luke Fildes, Marcus Stone, W. P. Frith and G. F. Watts.

On both sides of a 22 x 42 cm leaf, folding into six 22 x 14 cm pages. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. In small print. A few replacement speakers noted in manuscript. Details of the lectures for this four-day conference cover a page, with speakers including Anthony Eden (replaced by 'Mr Nutting'), Herbert Agar and Gunnar Myrdal (replaced by 'Mr Kenneth Yonge'). The rest of the pamphlet carries background notes, beginning: '"Europe 1953", the theme of our conference, is a challenging and topical subject. The face of Europe, as much as Africa and Asia, is changing.

On the reverse of the half-title leaf (only) of her book 'Records of Woman: with other Poems'. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Reads: 'Miss Chorley. With | Felicia Heman's kindest regards.' A nice association: Henry Fothergill Chorley edited the 'Memorials of Mrs Hemans' (1836).

On 7 x 11 cm slip of paper. In fair condition, aged and creased. The note, all in Beechey's hand, and probably addressed to a bookseller, reads: 'Monsieur - | De Regno Laconico, de Piraeeo. 1687. 2to. | Mr. Beechey | 16th. May'.

Both parts in fair condition, with light signs of age; the second part with creased corner causing damage to the last couple of leaves and back cover.
