The Simplified Spelling Board was founded in 1906, funded by Andrew Carnegie, and counted Mark Twain and President Theodore Roosevelt, and the English lexicographers James A. H. Murray, Walter W. Skeat and Joseph Wright among its members. The present collection of the Board's Circulars consists of 25 uniform items, all unbound and stapled. Simpson was a native of Carlisle in Cumbria, and came to London in the early years of the twentieth century, where he was encouraged by Frank Brangwyn to take up etching. In 1918 he was made official artist with the new Royal Air Force. The National Portrait Gallery has eight of Simpson's works, but none of the present six, which are all in the style of the artist's portrait ('ink, irregular') of the Earl of Halsbury, present in the Gallery's collection.Each of the six caricatures is printed in black within a 17 x 12 cm border.

In his preface Hailmann sees the 'attempts to colonize America' as a 'struggle set between brutal greed and a certain irrepressible spirit of fair play on the part of the intruding race in their intercourse with the Indians'.

The body of the letter, written on 9 October 1897, reads: 'Dear Sir, | I have published only one small volume of verse which has long been out of print ['The Prophecy of Merlin and other Poems', published in 1870]. I will see if from some friend I can borrow a copy to send you. | I have written some occasional and other verse besides that of the little book, but for some years have done little expect writing for the press.' In a postscript of 18 October 1897, signed 'J.

Printed in purple ink on both sides of a 9 x 11.5 cm grey card with rounded edges. In very good condition. One side attractively printed, with fancy type, decorative border and floral vignette. The other more businesslike, headed 'W. J. Little, Stationery, Library, and Useful Present Depot, Next London and South Western Bank, High Street, Harlesden, N.W.' and carrying a list of prices for 'Special Value Writing Papers'. The printers' details are not given, but the item comes from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

2pp., 12mo. Printed side by side on one side of a piece of 23 x 29cm wove paper, with blank reverse. In fair condition on aged and dusty paper. The left-hand page is headed 'NEW BURLINGTON STREET, Dec. 6', and has the slug at the foot: 'PRINTED BY T. BRETTELL, RUPERT STREET, HAYMARKET, LONDON.' It advertises the forthcoming publication in 'Bentley's Miscellany' of two titles.

Five committee members are named, followed by the members in alphabetical order in two columns, from 'Amery, L. S., All Souls College' to 'Yerburgh, R. D. T., University College'.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on aged and folded paper. The reverse of the document is docketted, with the stamp of the St James's Budget. He writes that he is enclosing a photograph, which he asks to be returned to him 'after it has served its purpose'.

Corps badge at head of first page and six illustrations in text. Divided into 24 sections, with headings: Formation; Early History; The First World War; The Second World War; Post War; Alliances; The Badge; Corps Colours; Dress Distinctions; Corps Day; Official Music; Patron Saint; Corps Motto. Written in a no-nonsense style. For example, the final two sections read: 'Patron Saint | 23.

Signed over a stamp by Campbell, and witnessed by Florence Campbell of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Campbell agrees to teach Langsford 'how to prepare the photographic paper called "Gelatino-chloride glossy printing-out paper" by the same formula and process as he uses and put him in the way to start and carry on a business for himself'.

8pp., 12mo. Stapled and unbound. In good condition, on aged high-acidity paper, with slight wear to extremities. Blind stamps and shelfmark of the Hartford Theological Seminary. The text begins: 'The House having under consideration the bill (S. 5876) to establish postal savings depositories for depositing savings at interest with the security of the Government for the repayment thereof, and for other purposes - | Mr SULZER said: [...]'.

William Sulzer (1863-1941), nicknamed 'Plain Bill Sulzer', is remembered as the only Governor of New York ever to be impeached. He served as a Representative in Congress from 1895 to 1912, in the latter year chairing the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 1913, shortly after his inauguration as 39th Governor of New York State, he was impeached by the State Assembly on charges of having diverted campaign funds to his own use, charges which Sulzer asserted were a 'fit-up' by Tammany Hall boss Charles F.

1p., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with minor repair to reverse. A printed document, completed in McKenzie's autograph and signed by him, with the signature of 'Glasgow' at the head. Note: Frederick Pirani was appointed acting professor of mathematics at Melbourne University in 1874, and in 1893, he was elected to the New Zealand parliament."

1p., 4to. Good, on aged paper, with small central spike hole made by recipient. The letter reads: 'Mr Bowyer begs Mr Hookham will send him the following Books as soon as possible | Parkhursts Lexicon for the Greek Testament[;] Smarts translation of Virgil; a translation of Sallust; there is one I do not know by whom it is translated it is in columns one side English and the other latin.' Postscript: 'Send them to Lady Bowyer Tunbridge Wells Kent'. A note in a contemporary hand at the foot of the page identifies the author as 'Sr. Geo B MP on Cathc.

The certificate is 1p., 4to, on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. It reads: 'I hereby Certify that on the twenty-first day of April, One Thousand Eight hundred & sixty five, Walter Stevenson Davidson of No. 16 St. James's Street, Esquire, is a registered Proprietor in the Books of the Peel River Land & Mineral Company Limited of Sixty five thousand pounds (£65,000) Consolidated Stock. | C. A. Aylmer. | Secy.' The recto of the second leaf carries the following: '21st. Apl 1865 | Memo. | Mr.

Mary Lane is semi-literate, but her letter is infused with anguish. 'Dear Brother | I have written to you Since I received your letter, but perhaps mine has never reach'd you almost every one of the family has wrote to you before this period no doubt you heard of the deaths of our father and Brother.
