On one side of piece of laid paper, roughly 48 x 59 cm, watermarked 'J A | 1840'. Clear, complete and neatly written. Text in italic and headings in gothic script. Good, on aged paper, unobtrusively repaired on reverse with archival tape. Eighteen numbered tolls and duties are described, with their costs, in the following four subsections: 'Tolls for Cattle', 'Tolls for Goods &c exposed for sale in cases where Stalls are not used', 'Tolls and stallage Duties upon Butchers' and 'Other Tolls and Stallage Duties on Goods exposed to sale upon Stalls | either opened or covered'.

Printed on both sides of a piece of 7 x 9 cm paper. Worn and aged, with damage along edges on both sides, affecting a few words of text, but not the signatures. Both sides with ornate decorative borders. On one side with printing details and decorative pattern of foliage; the other with the number filled in in manuscript, engraving of Royal Crest, and printed declaration, dated 'in the sixteenth Year of the Reign of His Majesty GEO. the Third. Dated at Philadelphia, the 8th Day of December, 1775. Signed at foot 'Jos Redman', 'Wm. Smith' and 'M Clarkson' (the second signature faded).

On one side of a piece of 12mo laid paper. Fourteen lines of text, beneath the date, with the two signatures in the right-hand margin. On aged and worn paper, with bottom right-hand corner worn away, slightly affecting both signatures, but with no apparent loss of text.

12mo, 10 pp. Text clear and complete. On aged and worn paper, with pin holes and a spike hole. Includes list of the 'Board of Management for 1907', accounts, 'Statement of Accounts, December 21st, 1901, to December 20th, 1906. Compiled by Mr. J. M. Longley, Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.' Also 'Report Presented at the Half-Yearly General Court, 27th Dec., 1906.' The 'Result of Poll', 'December Election, 1906', by Courtney, contains lists naming 'Successful Candidates' and 'Unsuccessful Candidates'.

8vo, 24 pp. Disbound. Text clear and complete. Contemporary ownership inscription at head of front cover: 'D Chalmer | 3 Clayes St'. Stamps of the New York Public Library on front cover and first page of text. On aged paper, with chipping to extremities. Scarce: the only copy of this fourth edition on COPAC at the British Library, and the only other copies of any other edition on COPAC - single copies of the first and third edition - both also at the British Library. John Rylands has 2 copies.

Card, c.11 x 7cm, [RECTO] date "Ist Novr 1807" in manuscript as are the figures in acolumn after categorisation as follows: "Redeemed by Annual Million &c [£] 66.968.173 | Do.[corrected in ms. to] on acct of Loans 61.622.815 | Do. by Land Tax 22.942.813 | Do. by £1. pr. Ct. pr. Ann . on Imp. Loan 814.723 | Total £ 152.340.529 | The sum to be expended in the ensuing Quarter is £2.529.224.155. [VERSO] [Manuscript] The Rt Honble Lord Melville". It appears that Melville and, presumably, others, received monthly notice of the size of the National Debt and other figures.

Janet Maxwell married William Maxwell in Buittle Parish on 3 September 1839, and died three years later. The nine items, in good condition on lightly-aged paper, provide a fascinating insight into the requisites and cost of an early Victorian Scottish middle-class wedding, from the wedding 'pelisse' to the 'bride's cake'. ONE. Covering packet with manuscript note by J. H. Maxwell reading 'Vouchers | My Daughters marriage - clothes jewellery pocket money &c | 3d Sep 1839 | £439. 5. 4'. TWO. Autograph itemised account by J. H. Maxwell. 12mo, 1 p.

8vo volume, on thick laid paper, in black simulated leather binding (a Black Book of Bankers, so to speak), marbled endpapers. Gilt stamp of the Bank of England on the front cover. In very good condition. The recto of the first leaf is inscribed 'To Gordon Richardson | In admiration and With every good wish On your 90th birthday | From your Friends and Colleagues of the Bank and the City and from abroad | 25th November 2005'. Around 70 signatures follow, over seven pages.

76pp., cr. 8vo, unbound and stabbed as issued, top edge of first page/title chipped with faint foxing and other minor damage, back cover (also with printed title) partly dusted, item mainly in good condition. Inscribed at the top of the title, faintly, "Received from Mr. Freshfield [presumably the lawyer/MP, JJW Freshfield (DNB)] | 23 Oct. 1862 | [GH?]". This proposed text has been annotated (not extensively) in an unknown hand, and has some differences from the later published version.

Sargeant's Machine for raising water') and . folding frontis (diagram, 'Improvements by Henry Witmer upon Anderson's Patent Condensing Tub'), small closed tear, attractive contemporary tree calf, red leather label, corners bumpedtop and bottom of spine also, other signs of wear browned and foxed throughout (reason given later), hinge strain front and back (with failed attempt to repair from with tape), ownership notes on endpapers, slightly damaged, else very good. INSCRIBED "Harrison Hall" (Author) on front pastedown.

With original addressed envelope for Letter 1 (Sir Robert Giffen KCB | etc etc etc. [Chamberlains' joke?], 40 Brunswick Road ...) , with franked signature of Chamberlain. Letter One (1902): Many thanks for your notes. I agree with you in thinking that preference is chiefly valuable as promoting the Imperial sentiment of unity. | It has, however, other advantages - (1) it is a movement as far as it goes, towards free trade within the Empire. Every reduction of duty helps towards the end.

68pp., printed wraps, comb binding. The programme for the Congress, with photographs of speakers, and synopses of their subjects, and other introductory matter. The discussions (or some of them?) were apparently later published but COPAC records only two publications. This item is not listed on COPAC, but WorldCat lists a copy at Harvard. Perhaps a pivotal discussion of the emerging China.

16mo, 24 pp. Stitched. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly-spotted paper. Topics, under nine headings, on pp.1-9, include the 'Aims and Methods' of the Society, constitution, 'Workers', 'Training for Social Work', 'Application for Help', 'Inquiry Department'. Pp.10-15 gives a list of different charity organisations in London, with names of officials, opening hours and other details. Pp.16-17 carry a list of borough offices of 'Metropolitan Mutual Registration of Assistance'. Pp.19-22 carries a 'List of District Committees and Offices.

Folio, 2 pp. On first leaf of bifolium, with the verso of the second leaf docketed, under the heading 'King's Warrant'. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Headed '(Copy)', and with 'George R' in a bold hand in the top left-hand corner. Although the signature is almost certainly not in the hand of the king, the document is docketed in pencil: 'Signature of his late beloved Majesty King George III on Copy of a Warrant retained by General Saml. Townsend'.

Fair, on aged paper, with slight damage to some corners from rusty paperclip. Signed in type 'ARTHUR HENDERSON, CHAIRMAN. | G.D.H. COLE, SECRETARY'. Headed in manuscript 'Memorandum by Mr. Henderson & Mr Cole.' A scarce, historic document in the history of British politics, addressing what its authors claim to be 'the most wide-spread and deep-seated unrest that has ever been known in this country'.

Five columns of text, each 51 cm long, on one side of piece of paper, 42 x 57 cm. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. An autograph note on the reverse by Miss E. C. Abraham of Swarthmoor Hall, Ulverston, states that the item was sent to her its author A. W. Rumney, whose presentation inscription ('With best wishes for Xmas | AWR') is at the head of the article. The first column discusses the accounts which cover the remaining four columns, dating from 'the year of Waterloo' 1815. The entry 'Sept. 2, Pd. for Mrs. Hofland's packages per wagon ... ... ...

Folio, 2 pp. On the rectos of the two leaves of a bifolium. On laid paper watermarked 'Gilling & Allford 1816'. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The first page contains a letter addressed to 'General Hall' from 'Union Office | Norwich 16th Novr. 1818', forty lines long and signed 'J Crowe'. The second page is headed 'Norwich Union Life Insurance Society | Statement of the particulars of the misconduct of the Secretary Mr Thos Bignold Senr.' It contains a six-point indictment of Bignold, totalling thirty-seven lines.

The collection comprises: A. 6 Autograph Letters, one signed John R. Forrest , 3 ending Farewell and 2 possibly incomplete or simply unsigned, to John Abraham of Liverpool, England, addressed as cousin, druggist, 1847-1879, various formats, total 27 (twenty-seven) pages, some lines faint, good condition. Subjects: (1847) introductory; personal and family information; Montreal connection; Vermont industries; railway about to be connected; I am a real Yankee by this time; jobs he's done inc. agent for the Liberty Gazette; currently doing a variety of jobs inc.

Continuation of title: "... Also, shewing how and quantity of Money may be made upon entirely new principles, so as to form a safe and useful Currency, and how the National Debt may be rapidly and honestly liquidated, at the rate of Compound Interest, without imposing fresh Burdens on the People." Booklet, 42pp., 12mo, brown printed paper wraps, corner of front missing (loss of word and 5 or 6 letters from imprint), some staining, chipping and tears of covers , mainly intact, bottom corner of pages turned, contents mainly good condition.

Foolscap bifolium (leaf dimensions 33 x 22.5 cm), 3 pp. On laid paper, with watermark of a horn on a crowned shield, from which dangles a number '4' and the monogram 'WR'. Ink faded, but text clear and complete, on grubby aged paper with some wear to extremities. Written in a neat seventeenth-century clerk hand. Docketed, on the otherwise-blank reverse of the second leaf, 'Establishment of his Maties: Forces'. First section [eleven entries] on first page headed 'His Maties: guard of hors Commanded by the Earl of Atholl'.

Four pages, folio, chips and tears, loss of a few letters, poor condition. Not listed on COPAC.

With the title lengthwise on reverse of second leaf, which also carries a table of 'The Fleets of the Cunard Company and of its Allied Lines' (both of vessels 'in commission' and 'building'). In small type. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Detailed prospectus quoting letter from 'the Chairman of the Cunard Company, Sir Alfred Booth, Bart'. Accompanying printed application form (8vo, 1 p). Both prospectus and application with the stamp of the Edinburgh stockbroker A. W. Banks.

[Full title] "The Gross and Net Produce of all the Branches of the Revenue under the Management of the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs in England. Together with an Adjustment of the Net Produce with the Payments into the Exchequer Annually from Christmas 1710. To which are prefixed the underwritten Acco[unts] viz[t] : 1. Three pages, 4to, bifolium, not bound, very good condition. Election to Burgess apparently means being the MP to represent the University at that time, apparently elected by some sort of proportional representation. In the circular, Murray's achievements, alignments, principles, and views (Liberal) are summarised (including how dangerous a continuance of the Conservative Government would be, listing their failures). Advice on voting is given, bearing in mind PR system.

Title continued: "Comprising A Description of the Customs and Manners of that Country; together with Observations on its Government, Finances, Population, Agriculture, Religion, Public Schools, Conduct towards English prisoners, and Internal Commerce. 1. Physical Description: 8vo, 20 pp. Ten loose leaves of watermarked laid paper. Aged, and with chipping to extremities causing occasional minor loss to text. In a neat, close Chancery hand. The leaves would appear to be sequential, with no evidence that any are lacking from the series. Docketing in a modern hand in pencil at head of recto of first leaf, which also has laid down on it a fragment of a small type-written slip: 'B/26 | <...> AL - SERIES B. | <...> 1681 - DECEMBER 1681'. Pp.1-10 (on Leaves One to Five) concern gold; pp.11-20 (on Leaves Six to Ten) concern silver.A.

65pp., folio, marbled wrap front only, ragged. It considers the issue of money bills and the two Houses between 1661 and 1703. Pencilled note, front free endpaper verso, "Unique M.S. from Earl of Harrowby's Collection".  The writer discusses various bills and their progress though amendment and proviso, precedent, dissent, and committee, commencing with the context: "There do not appear in their Lordships Journals any thing Remarkable touching that matter till after the Restoration, when the Lords from that Time to the year 1695 frequently amended Money Bills of all kinds , , , ".

Two pages, 12mo, minor staining, mainly good condition.

Three pages, 8vo, good condition. He commences with a mathematical supposition (in formula terms) then proceeds with putting the suppositions of "the master" [Malthus, Ricardo or their like?) in mathematical terms, concluding a fall of price to "3/4d or one quarter", adding that "The suppositions he makes are incompatible with the ratio theory ...", doing sums which he concludes with the an answer he describes as "absurd".
