This item is an anonymous review of Macvicar's work, not the work itself, the author writing: 'what is proposed here is not a critique or an estimate of our author's philosophy, but a simple view of it as short as possible, the accuracy of which may be depended upon, since we have been favoured with it by Dr Macvicar himself'. Scarce: the only copy traced on COPAC at Glasgow. Now uncommon.

Royal crest at head printed in gold and other colours and also embossed. Headed: 'BUCKINGHAM PALACE. | MONDAY EVENING, 16th. JUNE, 1879.' Fourteen pieces are listed, by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Wagner (2), Gounod (2), Bizet, Max Bruch, Rossini (2), Ambroise Thomas, Massenet, Schumann and Cimarosa. Apart from Patti, Kellogg and Trebelli, the performers are 'Herr Henschel', 'Mr. W. H.

I mean the Butcher's shop at Bayonne you spoke to the Baron about. Where does the dear man live? Also how have you settled to keep the meat fresh?' She asks for instructions so that she may inform her cook, 'a German who speaks a few words of french & a sort of nigger English'.

He is enclosing a letter from 'Dr Braun in Rome', and suggests that Smyth will be able to correct the translation. 'I am sorry Dr Braun is not more successful, but he has zeal in the Cause, & will not lose an opportunity.' TWO: 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with remains of mount on blank page. A letter of condolence on the death of Smyth's tenth child, Caroline Mary Smyth (1834-1859).

xi + 67pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. The preface to the first edition is dated from 'Liverpool, 1869', and that to the second from 'Lincoln, 1871'. In the latter Goy writes that he is in 'failing health', but that 'the whole has been thoroughly revised, and much additional matter introduced. The chapter on Artificial Teeth has been enlarged, and the character of the work altogether improved.' Scarce: no copy of any edition found on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and none in the Wellcome Library.

She is sending 'one line' to tell him 'how greatly all of us like the window, which was put up in the Church according to your promise before Easter Day'. She praises the 'beauty & harmony of colour', and the 'noble religious dignity of the principal figures' of the window, with 'the careful delicate treatment of every detail'.

1p., 16mo. In good condition, lightly aged and spotted. Since she is going away, he considers it 'safer' to return the 'Oedipus', which has given him great pleasure. He hopes she will enjoy her 'Freshwater outing', and that 'we may remain above the horizon to welcome your return to town'. The Freshfields were a noted family of solicitors, with strong connections with the Bank of England.

Printed in black on one side of a 12.5 x 17 cm card. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper, with a little light staining. To the right of the page is an illustration by Tenniel of Mr Punch holding Yorick's skull, while a pug dog looks on. Text reads: 'Sir John Tenniel requests the honour of a visit from [blank] and friend, On Saturday, March 30th, To the Private View of some of his Drawings for "Punch Cartoons," etc., At the Fine Art Society's, 148, New Bond Street. 10 to 6 o'clock.'

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged and spotted paper. Written in a close and difficult hand. He begins by apologising for a mistake in his 'account of St Bees', before turning to a paper by him, which he states - adding 'This is private.' - has been corrected by the Dean of St Pauls and Bishop of Truro. He discusses existing text books for theological and clerical subjects, praising R. Denny Urlin's 'Legal Guide for the Clergy', 'which packs into ninety pages of large type all that the ordinary curate need know'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with thin strip from previous mount. The letter begins: 'Sir, | I had the honor (a great one) of being presented to you, by Lord Palmerston, and of meeting you at the house of Mr Ellis.' As he was received 'with so much kindness', he ventures to ask the favour of being allowed to be 'present in the Chamber of Deputies, to hear the debate on the address', which he considers 'a discussion of so much interest'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. In regard to the recipient's 'Memo', he writes that it is 'difficult to define the exact scope of these <?> of Irish Legal Customs'. He cannot help him with 'anything brief', and 'details are of course out of the question'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper, with slight show-through on first leaf. Expressing, 'on behalf of the Eagle Committee', a 'joint sense' of Powell's 'kindly interest in the magazine', whose 'circulation, hitherto, has been restricted to members of the College'. Powell's 'helpful offer' will be considered that week, when his letter is laid before the committee, who are desirous of inserting, 'more systematically, intelligence respecting members of the College in London'.
