Both sets of proofs unstitched and unopened (and both opening out into a folio sheet), and both with title-pages printed in red and black. Both in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, and both stamped on first page 'PLEASE PASS FOR PRESS | MARGINS' in blue, with purple oval dated printers' stamp. FIRST SET: 16pp., 8vo, paginated to xvi. Title: 'THE WORKS OF MR. FRANCIS | RABELAIS | [...] | Illustrated by W. HEATH ROBINSON | The Second Part'. Publishers' details at foot on pasted label at foot of title-page: 'MCMLIV | THE NAVARRE SOCIETY LONDON'.

10 x 8.5 cm original print of black and white photograph. In frail condition, with slight loss to one corner, and another corner torn away and repaired with archival tape. A full-length view of the elegant artist, in long painter's robes, pointing a brush at a painting on an easel, with three paintings, including a miniature, on the wall behind her, and two paintings leaning against the same wall, and a small sculpture on a painted clock behind the easal. There is no representation of Gottschalk in the National Portrait Gallery collection.

A highly interesting letter, indicative of the relationship between artist and patron in late Georgian England, and revealing of Cotman's mental state at a time during which, as the Oxford DNB notes, he 'suffered from depressive illness'. 4pp., 4to. Bifolium with 53 lines of text. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper, with a few short closed tears at ends of crease lines. The letter concerns the painting 'View from Yarmouth Bridge, looking towards Breydon, just after sun-set' (now in the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery).

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with 'Conversazione' in a contemporary hand at head of first page. Addressing his letter to 'Dear Sir', Haghe begins by acknowledging the receipt of 'a card for the conversasione [sic] of the 5th. of June next', adding that he will be pleased 'to send you a couple of pictures at the appointed time'. He gives the dimensions of the two pictures. He ends by reminding the recipient that 'my brother Charles has not yet received the card you have usualy [sic] been kind enough to send him'.

[1] + 10pp., crown 8vo. Held together with a metal stud, and placed in a brown card folder, with typed title on front cover. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear. Professionally presented, with the text typed out in columns and the sums and running totals written out in manuscript. An estimate, with costings for a large number of itemised elements, ranging from 'temporary lavatory accommodation for the workmen for all trades' to 'the removal of trees or shrubs as required, and grub up the roots - The timber will belong to the Contractor - and he must here allow for same'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. In 1857 O'Neill married Emma Stuart Callcott, granddaughter of the artist Sir Augustus Wall Callcott, from whose house the present letter is addressed. He informs Cooke that he has 'asked Mr. Callcott [probably O'Neill's father-in-law William Hutchins Callcott (1807-1882)] to come & take a "friendly cup" with me on Thursday Evg. & we shall be glad of your company if you can favour us'. In a postscript O'Neill states that Callcott has promised to let him have 'the sketches I spoke to you of, in case you should come'.

Printed on one side of a 25.5 x 16 cm piece of cream paper. The portrait itself is 17 x 12 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Printed above it is 'LIFE | FRANK MILES | October 18, 1879.' And below: '"VIOLET FANE" | Phototypie, 15, Quai Voltaire, Paris'. Inscribed at foot in pencil: 'To Mrs. Rolland from her affte. | "Violet Fane"'.

ALS, on letterhead of the City Art Gallery, Leeds; 10 March 1916. He offers to review 'Rebecca West's forthcoming little book on "Henry James"', being 'particularly interested in both author & subject'. Asks for contact details of a relative of Walter Riddall's: 'I lent him before his death one of my "To-Day" volumes which I can't replace & don't want to lose.'

TLS, The Studio, Carrigoona Cottage, Co. Wicklow; 15 May 1950, 2pp., 8vo. And Photograph. He recalls that SL was ‘good enough to read a manuscript of mine several years ago, and since then, after re-reading it, I came to the conclusion that it was perfectly awful. I then on the advice of Sean O’Faolain, added a few more chapters re-wrote and altered the whole thing, and a few weeks ago I signed an agreement with Batsford, to publish it with the title, “An Irish Portrait”.

8pp., 4to. Stapled. In fair conditon, on aged and lightly creased paper, with slight damage to upper staple. Unillustrated: listing 100 works, with date and dimensions. Uncommon: no copy in the British Library, and six copies on COPAC and OCLC WorldCat.

He has been 'asked by a gentleman who called here to advise you of publications after Albert Moore &c', and lists five engravings, with prices, the last being, for five guineas, 'a very fine work after <?> etching "A Christmas Carol" | Artist proof on vellum'. He also draws the recipient's attention to 'Phoebe Sir Fredk Leighton cut of which I enclosed'.

33pp., 8vo. In brown printed wraps. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets, and with library stitching on spine. Aged and worn, with stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to damaged front cover. Covers and last leaf loose. 82 lots with unusually detailed descriptions. Mostly devoted to British artists, the collection included a Constable, couple of Turners, three Gainsboroughs and four by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC or WorldCat at Oxford.

On both sides of a rectangular (5.5 x 16.5 cm) strip cut from letter. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. Recto: '4 Brixton place | Brixton Surry [sic] | Janry: 12th. 1833 | Sir | M Mackenzie has conveyed to me y polite offier of allowing a few prospectus of my [...]'. Verso: 'to Dr. Tournay by my friend Dr Burney, but as your house is the rendezvous of all the learned & the rich in Oxford, perhaps it is unnecessary for me to solicit the onor of Dr Tournay's influence. | I remain, | [...]'.

In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets ('13' in manuscript at head of front cover), and with library stitching at spine. Uncommon: five copies on COPAC and WorldCat, but none at the British Library or in North America.

20pp., 8vo. In lilac wraps, printed in black. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets, and with library stitching on spine. Aged and worn, with stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to damaged front cover. (The collection had been amassed by the cotton manufacturer Thomas Taylor, Mayor of Wigan, 1854-55, and was housed in his country house at Aston Rowant.) Around half the 94 lots priced in guineas and pounds in red ink. Includes work by John Linnell, J. W. Waterhouse, Luke Fildes, Marcus Stone, W. P. Frith and G. F. Watts.

On 7 x 11 cm slip of paper. In fair condition, aged and creased. The note, all in Beechey's hand, and probably addressed to a bookseller, reads: 'Monsieur - | De Regno Laconico, de Piraeeo. 1687. 2to. | Mr. Beechey | 16th. May'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter reads: 'I beg to re-enclose for the excerpt from your publication "Men & Women of the Time," of my biography which I have revised, making a very few alterations, & adding a few lines which I write on the other sheet of this note: [not present] my permanent address now is the above'. The note relates to the fifteenth edition of the work, published by G. Routledge & Sons in 1899.

1p., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Letterhead illustrated in old-fashioned style, with a bare-chested woman clutching a pen, floating at the head of a twirl of loose papers and fabrics. The circular, which encloses a prospectus, draws the recipient's notice to the nature of the two courses offered within it.

Printed in black on one side of piece of 33 x 20 cm thick paper [full page containg image, 20 x 13cm]. Dimensions of print 23 x 13.5 cm [largest image in book, 15 x 9.5cm] . In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper, with slight foxing.

Lumb Stocks was, as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography points out, 'one of the most influential exponents of steel line engraving, and his death left the Royal Academy without an engraver in its ranks'. He bequeathed his collection of prints to the British Museum;; the present collection was retained by the family, and purchased from the estate of Harold Carpenter Lumb Stocks (1884-1956), organist of St Asaph Cathedral.

Identical in layout, and including 'List of Professors', 'Examiners in Diction | 1910-1917', 'List of those who have acted as Honorary Examiners in the Dramatic Section', 'Fees', 'Rules of the Classes'. The last four pages give details of the 'Instruction given', in the form of Courses A to F.

Three pages 12mo, fold mark, good condition. He informs his correspondent that he has jsut beeen to London for "dem internatioalur Kongress fur Schulhygiene" but the rest escapes me. Image of letter may be obtained on request. Price assuming decent content. Note: "From 1920, Dr Heinrich Stadelmann, Dresden psychiatrist and hypnotist, fixes us with outsize spectral watery-green eyes, rims pinkly bloodshot. His face is ashen – Stadelmann never saw the sun, working only at night – and his ears are so large that they evoke another nocturnal creature, a bat.

Bifolium of advertisements (4pp., 4to) loosely inserted between cover and first leaf. In fair condition, with the first page browned by the loosely inserted advertisements. Wraps (stamped 'Spécimen') chipped and worn. The article on Legros covers pp.71-79; and the Beardsley obituary is on p.90. Also present is a seven-page article (83-89) on 'Murailles'by E. de Crauzat.

The thirteen items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All but one bear the purple oval stamp of the Royal Society of Arts, and most are docketted. Totalling 10pp., 4to; 3pp., 12mo. The earlier letters are addressed to Wood and the later ones to Menzies. The first letter (14 August 1915), in which Pite proposes becoming a member of the Society, is the only one not to concern the course of lectures.
