An extraordinarily-detailed account of 'The Siege of Bhurtpoor', from a series titled 'Operations of the Bengal Army in India and on Foreign Service', utilising a wide variety of sources, both published and unpublished, each quotation meticulously cited in footnotes. On 39 sheets, almost all of them in two columns of small print, mostly roughly 50 x 16 cm, but a few longer, and one sheet of three columns (46 x 28.5 cm, being part of a description of the 'Formation of the Army: and the General &c., Staff.'). Numbered in manuscript 346-385, with 374 not present.

1p., small 4to. He refers to 'lunch with the Bells' and 'Tattie', and apologizes for keeping the books for so long: 'They were a great help, especially Rory Fitzpatrick's God's Frontiersmen'. He ends with the news that he is revising his manuscript, 'and would like to send you a copy when it is eventually published'. The book Heren was working on does not appear to have been published.

Printed on both sides of an 11 x 23 cm piece of grey paper. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. A nice piece of ephemera. The front is tastefully laid out, with fancy lettering and the royal crest. Numbered in red ink 1379. Recording Miss Fordyce's guinea subscription to the association. The reverse has the terms of the Association engraved in copperplate over ten lines. It is docketed '£1 . 1 | Fine Art Association | 25 March 1857'.

He thanks Berman for drawing his attention to the two versions of the play, adding: 'I feel that in this Goethe Centenary year, when the Urfaust is so rightly being performed, some English manager should put Marlowe's play on the stage for a few performances.'

With 'Index to Contents' on inside front cover, divided into 'Sheet Music' (including 'Christy Minstrel Songs and Ballads', 'Bishop's Glees', 'Varsovianas', 'Philipp Fahrbach Junr.'s Dance and March Compositions' and 'Brass Band Music') and 'Index of Music Books' (including music for organ, harmonium and concertina). Scarce: no copy found either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

In two columns of small print, on one side of a piece of 44.5 x 28 cm laid paper. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Drophead title, with engraving of the royal crest. The Kenilworth Buffet (now at Warwick Castle) is an ornately-designed table, commissioned by Cookes and Sons for the Great Exhibition, and telling the tale of the romance between Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, carved from 'a colossal oak tree, which grew near Kenilworth Castle, in Warwickshire, measuring ten feet in diameter, and containing about six hundred cubic feet of wood'.

Two-page preface by Hayward, preceded by the following note: 'The Exhibition has been arranged under the auspices of the Syndics of the University Library and the Catalogue made by MR JOHN HAYWARD who, in collaboration with MR HAROLD WILLIAMS, F.B.A., also made the selection of the Books and Manuscripts for the Exhibition.' Uncommon (apart from the Folcroft reprint): the only copy on OCLC WorldCat at the British Library.

Printed brown-paper 19 x 25 cm landscape folder, containing 30 black and white captioned photographs of buildings featuring the firm's doors, on 30 leaves of shiny art paper, loosely inserted. The folder and items all have three punch holes at the spine, and there are the remains of the brown ribbon that bound them together. The 30 leaves are in good condition, lightly-worn, in worn and stained folder. 26 different photographs, and a further 4 duplicates. The captions consist of headings (such as 'Residence of H. G.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. A long letter, closely and neatly written, with a number of emendations suggesting that it is a draft. After a short reference to the Count's kindness to him and his friend Joseph Neave, he devotes the rest of the letter to 'the heavy trial thou has had to pass through', discussing the nature of loss with 'knowledge from my own experience, that the loss of a child is a grief into whose full depths no stranger can enter, and that words, even well-meant, when uttered at an unfit moment, pain instead of helping'.

The collection is lightly-aged, but in good overall condition. It consists of five undated typescripts, twenty-four black and white photographs, and a few items of correspondence. The typescripts: ONE. Early draft of Longford's 1953 autobiography 'Born to Believe', published in 1953. 4to, 58 pp, paginated 1-55, 9A, 9B and 52A. Ends midway through Chapter 6. There are a number of autograph emendations, and the typescript exhibits differences from the published version. A second typed draft of half a page of text covers the earlier draft, which is still legible beneath.

The collection is in fair condition, with the photographs in good condition, and the other items showing some signs of age and wear. The four printed programmes are all bifoliums. Printed in black on one side of a 12.5 x 17 cm card. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper, with a little light staining. To the right of the page is an illustration by Tenniel of Mr Punch holding Yorick's skull, while a pug dog looks on. Text reads: 'Sir John Tenniel requests the honour of a visit from [blank] and friend, On Saturday, March 30th, To the Private View of some of his Drawings for "Punch Cartoons," etc., At the Fine Art Society's, 148, New Bond Street. 10 to 6 o'clock.'

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with thin strip from previous mount. The letter begins: 'Sir, | I had the honor (a great one) of being presented to you, by Lord Palmerston, and of meeting you at the house of Mr Ellis.' As he was received 'with so much kindness', he ventures to ask the favour of being allowed to be 'present in the Chamber of Deputies, to hear the debate on the address', which he considers 'a discussion of so much interest'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with negligible traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the leaf. Addressed to 'Dr Clarke | Harper St.' After explaining that the Commissioners of the Public Records want lists of the new plates for the first volume of 'Foeder', and another list of 'the old ones necessary to be re engraved', reminds him that he promised the latter list 'in September last'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter, addressed to an unnamed recipient, begins: 'My dear Sir | Before I quitted Office I communicated to the Court of directors the Draft of an Insolvent Bill & some letters on the subject which I had received from the Judges in India, together with a request that they might be laid before you for your opinion & observations.' He should like the opportunity to talk over the subject with him, as he considers himself 'pledged to bring the measure forward [in the House of Commons]' with the approval of the present Board.

Good firm signature at foot of one side of 13.5 x 8.5cm card. The rest of the page is blank, and the reverse has printed text for a post card. In fair condition, aged and with negligible effect to signature from rectangle of slight browning on card perhaps caused by extended contact with newspaper cutting.
