He is pleased that her 'footsteps are treading in high places', and hopes that this 'leads to as much golden reward as it seems to suggest'. He will see her friend 'Mr. Kennerley', but he cannot be 'encouraging' as he is not at present 'casting any picture', and will not be doing so for 'a month or so'. His 'activities now never seem to bring [him] to Hampstead', he hopes she will see him when she visits his 'neighbourhood'.

All in good condition on lightly-aged paper, and all but one (Letter Five) bearing the Society's stamp. Letters One, Two and Six docketed. Letter One (18 November): 12mo, 2 pp. Hoping that Wood, 'as an Ex President of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain', will 'help the Hurter and Driffield Memorial Fund [of which he is Honorary Treasurer] which is being got up [by the Royal Photographic Society] [...] to do honour to the memory of those famous workers in the Chemistry & Physics of Photography'. Begins 'With my wretched attainments as a cricketer & golfer how otherwise can I do credit to my revered Chief and his band of brothers than by trying to keep my wicket up in this job?' Discusses 'those Jokers [members of a club?] whom HM has still to honour': 'we all consider that to be a Joker at all is quite enough for any man'.

Three pages, 12mo, good condition. She expresses delight at receiving a bouquet from "Her Royal Highness" and wishes her thanks for the latter's "kindness and consideration for me" to be conveyed to the Queen, an her appreciation expressed.

Folio, 65 pp. In a number of hands. Clear and complete. Heavily aged, in worn binding with front board and flyleaf detached. Many of the leaves are blindstamped at the head with the royal crest. With stamps of the Public Record Office Library, and withdrawal stamp from 'TNA Library' (The National Archives Library) dated 28 July 2007. At head of flyleaf: 'This volume is a manuscript copy of C 1 3 on the search room shelves'. A finding aid, numerating the census returns for the districts of the various counties from Bedford to Yorkshire, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Striking vellum document, 60 x 75 cm. Docketed on reverse. 32 lines of text, ruled with red lines, with ornate engraved decorative border along three sides, headed in large letters 'Victoria by the Grace of God', and depicting the young Queen, the royal crest, a crown held by a cherub, blind justice, and other images. Tax stamp in margin and frayed ribbon at foot. On 9 September [V Geo.

Letter One (recipient not named): Asking to be sent any works 'that would give information on the subject of Chaplaincies abroad in connection with the Government or otherwise', as well as 'a copy of the publisher's circular regularly'. Letter Two (to Smith): Asking if there 'have been any sales of Salverte since the Athenaeum Advertisement', and what Smith would give 'for the whole lot on hand (say per 100 copies) if willing to take them off my hands'.

Folio, circa 360 pp. Label of the stationers E. B. Horwood & Co. Ltd. In sturdy half-calf binding, with red leather label stamped 'MINUTE BOOK' on spine. Text clear and complete. Internally tight, on lightly-aged paper with slight damp staining at foot. Binding worn and with damp damage to back board. Titled 'Society of Chemical Industry | Chemical Industry Club', and with manuscript note on flyleaf by 'G. S.

Folio, 2 pp. On first leaf of bifolium. Neatly written out by a secretary and signed by Curtis and 'W. H. Brown, acting secretary'. Headed 'By Sir Lucius Curtis, Bt. CB. Rear Admiral of the Red Second in Command of H.M. Ships and Vessels, on the Mediterranean Station and Senior Officer during the Absence of the Commander in Chief on Special Service.' Directing Norman to join 'Her Majesty's Surveying Vessel Bonetti' as Lieutenant, 'until the pleasure of Vice Admiral Sir William Parker the Commander in Chief shall be known'

12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. 48 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Attached, in a windowpane, to a leaf detached from an autograph album. He 'fell in, at Newport, in South Wales, with a youth of extraordinary ability as a player on the Harp - not the Welsh, but the Gothic instrument'. Although the youth, named 'Pollock', is 'Harpist to Lady Morgan', his income 'is scanty and fluctuating'. Exclaims 'What is to be done, Sir George!

Square of paper, neatly torn from letter. Lightly-aged and creased. On one side firm signature ('Yrs truly | Dudley Coutts Stuart'), with docketting at foot ('Lord Dudley Coutts Stuart | "The friend of the Poles" -'). On reverse: '<...> a select Committee - A short time I obtained a return of a memorial presented him to the Court of Directors'.

12mo, 1 p. Eight lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Asking if Webster requires a seat at a celebratory dinner for George Washington, 'Tickets not to exceed one Guinea'.

All three items in good condition, with texts clear and complete, on lightly-aged paper. Letter One: 9 January 1913. Typed. 8vo, 3 pp. Bifolium. Twenty-eight lines. Sending florid congratulations on Ormsby-Gore's forthcoming marriage, and describing him as 'one who is bearing burdens bravely & buoyantly in the public service, & striving honestly to do his duty to God & man'. His bride-to-be, Beatrice Edith Mildred Gascoyne-Cecil, is described as 'a maiden like-minded'. Letter Two: 28 April 1913. Typed. 4to, 1 p. Fifteen lines typed and a short autograph postscript.

Around the size of a modern cheque. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. A nice item, considering Rogers' background. A printed cheque for £40 cash, written out to himself (as 'S R'). With a lattice of five lines over Rogers' signature ('Saml Rogers') indicating payment. Denominations to be paid indicated on back.

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium. 13 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Giving details of a proposed trip to London, to be made 'if the weather be such as in my state of health will allow me with safety to leave home', on which he hopes to call on Walton 'in order to see your pictures'. Evelyn played an important role in the creation of Deptford Park, and used land from his ancestor John Evelyn's Sayes Court estate as a recreation ground for his Deptford tenants.

One page, folio, fold marks, good condition. With RSA stamp. He's received a circular asking if I would like my name to be added to the list of the supporters of the Society. | In reply I beg to state that I am perfectly aware of the long and useful services rendered to the public by the Society but as I am not now a resident in London, and therefore should have but little opportunity of taking part in the transactions of the Society, I would rather not at present time, consider the question of Membership.

Three pages, 12mo, black border, some smudging and other marking and minor damage, text clear and complete, as follows: I am not acquainted with Lord Effingham, and cannot undertake to write to him on the subject of the Mendicity Society. | I have for years belonged to, & made use of the machinery of that Society not only to detect imposture, but to relieve real distress, and I never heard before of anybody being deprived of lodgings on account of enquiries being made by that Society - | That you should wish to sell your work ought to meet with your landlady's approbation.

Two pages, 12mo, one stain, fold marks, sl. grubby, text clear, as follows: The Prince of Wales has at the same time desired Sir W. Knollys to tell My Dighton that H.R.H. thinks the likeness of the King of the Belgians would be much improved if he could make the nose a little longer and the beard a little darker -- The portrait shall therefore remain in Sir W. Knollys's room should nr Dighton wish to take it away with the view of making the improvements which the Prince has suggested. A list of names in pencil (Dighton's hand) has been added, including Thomas Baring and Combermere.

4to, 1 p. In reply to a request for an autograph, she feels 'flattered'. She has copied out seven lines from her poem 'Lines on Mr. Johnstone's Picture of the Covenanters' Marriage' (which was published in 'The New Monthly Belle Assemblée' of 1844).

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium. Fair, on aged paper. He begins 'Print the farce', and gives two conditions, ending 'There that's definite'. He will have the farce published after it is performed in London, 'at a good theatre of course'. 'But get on with it and lets have the proofs.' He will 'most likely' play it himself 'at Manchester and somewhere else, when I will put all this stage business &c in'. Ends 'Toole wants to do it. | Yours Tooley - I mean Truly'. In one of two postscripts he hopes Lacy has 'a good supply of Billy Taylor. Hopewood & Crew publish it.'

8vo, 1 p. Text clear and complete. Docketed on reverse 'pour agit | Salles'. Initial bill of eleven items, from '1 jour de Logement 36 [francs]' to café et thé 12 [francs]', amounting to 306 francs. According to the Oxford DNB, 'In April 1814, with Napoleon on his way to Elba, Keith was at La Rochelle supervising the embarkation of Wellington's army for its return to England. He was back at Plymouth on 29 July and hauled down his flag.' This is added to a running bill for 8027 francs, with two extra items (including 'Domestiques'), making a total of 8618 francs.

Three pages, 8vo, some damage, but text clear and complete, tear at fold of bifolium despite attempt to repair with sellotape., He has been asked by a friend to get an answer about the diseases of camels, quoting his enquiry in which one, Photoshootui (if I read the word right), is described, and referring to ancient sources and Native opinion. His correspondent is engaged in a popular treatise, or history, of vaccination. Hallam hopes for references to Western books that might give information.

12mo, 1 p. Ten lines. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Letterhead in red. Headed 'My Garden' (in 1907 Arrowsmith published 'My Garden and other Poems by John Gregory. With an appreciation by E. J. Watson'). He wonders whether the book is 'worth notice'. 'There is no mistake about Gregory being a working man [he was a cobbler]. His son is Prof. of astronomy and Assistant Editor of Nature'.

Landscape 12mo, 1 p. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper, with light traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse. Asking for a copy of his 'Sermons for Families & Villages' ['Sermons chiefly designed for family reading and village worship', 1842] to be given to an individual, and 'put to my Account'.

Landscape 8vo, 1 p. Text clear and complete. Fair on aged vellum. Engraving of royal crest in top left-hand corner. Printed in small type and completed in manuscript. Three witnesses, including 'Rich. Robinson' and 'Walt: Robins'. Red wax seal of head, and government stamp on blue. Brief modern notes accompanying the item state that the elder Shaw was born in 1685, the son of the headmaster of Lichfield Grammar School (Johnson's old school), who died in 1704. There is no record of anything published by the Shaws, who do not feature in BBTI.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Begins 'Selfishly I can't help feeling sad at the announcement of your retirement', which means that he will see 'even less' of him. He rejoices at Senhouse's 'liberation' and sends him 'all love and blessings - not unmixed with envy'.

12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. On aged paper, with a spike-hole with closed tear from hole to edge of both leaves. No loss to text. He is sending 'a list of the books that I wish to part with in order that upon the exchange for a Dyce's Shakspeare, one settlement of our account might suffice.' There follows a list of the books over around 40 lines, beginning with 'Tyndewood's Procinciale Fol. calf. neat. Best edition' and ending with 'Kennet's Impropriations 1 vol calf'. Includes 'Solomon & Perseda 1599'. The recipient has written '£6 .

One page, 8vo, some marking but text clear and complete. "Iam glad that your messenger caught me here, & that the picture could at once be returned. There is nothing to bid fo. It is a wothless painting, clumsily touched upon to make high lights &c. & is in miserable condition might be any child of the period".
