On one side of a piece of vellum (roughly 7.5 x 32.5 cm). In fair condition, aged and worn. In English. Scan on application.

Lascelles bought Lichfield House in 1729, and committed suicide there in 1753. The enormous success of Braddon's novels 'Lady Audley's Secret' (1862) and 'Aurora Floyd' (1863) allowed her to buy Lichfield House, where she too died. It was demolished in the 1930s. ONE: Manuscript indenture on vellum. 'Mrs. M. E. Maxwell to G. M. Maxwell Esq | Conveyance of freehold property known as "The Homestead" Sheen Road Richmond Surrey'. 10 June 1914. 4pp., 8vo, with covering page. Laid out in usual fashion, bound with green ribbon with tax stamps, Land Registry stamp, and two seals in red wax.

Letter and printed text both on a 12mo bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Letter: 2pp., 12mo. Docketed with stamp of the Brighton Aquarium. She writes that she is 'happy to accept an Engagement for a Saturday Concert at the Brighton Aquarium as Principal Soprano' and will do her best 'to meet your terms'. Printed text: 2pp., 12mo.

The three items in good condition, lightly-aged. The two letters signed 'Jack Squire' and the note 'J C S'. Totalling 7pp., in 12mo and 4to. ONE: ALS. On letterhead of the New Statesman; 'Thursday | dead hour of night', undated, but docketed 20 July 1915. An interesting letter, in the light of the fact that Lynd held Squire largely to blame for her husband's descent into alchoholism. He begins 'Dear Mrs Lynd, If I loathed you, as, on the whole, I do not, I should make a little poem e.g. | There was an M.S.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged with pin holes. He has been 'advised that a private [last word underlined] memorial to Gladstone is the best course'. 'Publication', he has been told, would make the plan 'more exacting as giving a sense of importance'. Trevelyan would 'gladly, as M P for the burghs, forward such a memorial'. Gladstone had been intending to retire from politics at the end of 1882.

1p., 8vo. On aged paper worn at extremities (not affecting text). The note reads: 'Nov 6 1790 | Srs | I received your letter by cover of Mr Herbert & will have ye honour to return an answer on Wednesday next | & am your Obedt Humble Servant | Melbourne'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with Stewart's seal in red wax, to 'Mr. Knobel | Wine Merchant | South Audley Street'. He asks Knobel to 'send a person & a Hamper to pack up three dozen of wine & ale left at the Major General's for the Country, as before'. He asks for the hamper to be sent, 'so packed & sealed, together with 3 dozen hamper of His, (Mr. Knobel's) best Port ready for immediate drinking by the Hoy to Woodbridge in Suffolk, as last winter'.

1p., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Reads: 'Sir Henry Parnell presents his Compliments to Mr Mandel, & begs to acknowledge the receipt of his letter. But he has not leisure at present to examine the contents of it. | Feb: 22: 1828'.

15 + [1]pp., 8vo. In grey printed card wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged, with rusted staples. The author describes his work in an introductory note as 'an elegant and ingenious poem in heroic verse; suggested by the third Satire of Juvenal; wherein the foolishness of the institutions of this University, and the dullness and dishonesty of its inhabitants are for the first time properly exposed'. The influence of Samuel Johnson (another adapter of Juvenal and also an Oxford man) is strong, as the opening indicates: 'Though on my brow there rose an angry frown | When B - ll - l's [i.e.

On one side of piece of 31 x 25 cm shiny art paper. In fair condition, lightly aged, with wear at head and foot and vertical fold at right hand edge. Image undamaged. At head: 'THE FAUNA OF CAMBRIDGE. | With apologies to the Authors of "ANIMAL LAND," E.T.R., and the "GRANTA." | THE MYKE.' At foot: 'THIS wyse little animile nose all about what is going on inside, but he is very korshus when he tels you about it.

Although the weather is fine he has a bad cold, and his 'people' will not let him leave the house: 'I regret this very much for I was anxious to testify my regard for Leigh Hunt's memory & it wd have gratified me to meet Mr. S. C. Hall & yourself'. He is sending a 'note for Durham', and wishes to express his 'entire approbation of your proceedings'.

2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with slight damage to one corner. At the head of the first page is a printed form (manuscript additions in square brackets): 'County of [Derby.] The Information and Complaint of [Joseph Walker Bourne] of [Church Gresley] in the said County [Potter] taken upon Oath before [me one] of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County, the [27th] day of [October] 18[30]'. Written out by the magistrate Sir Oswald Mosley, 2nd Baronet (1785-1871), and signed by him ('Oswald Mosley'), his son 'Oswd Mosley Junr' (1804-1856), 'Joseph.

Printed in gold on one side of a piece of thin card. In very good condition. The message reads: 'May Christmas and the New Year bring | Your Excellency Happiness and Prosperity | and | your Country Honour and Victory. | GENERAL SIR BABER SHUM SHERE JUNG, | Bahadoor Rana, | Nepalese Army. | Delhi, 1916.'

48pp., folio. Each page on the recto of a leaf, and all 48 leaves held together by a brass stud. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Authorship or ownership inscription on title page: 'A. E. Bullock | 43 Chancery Lane | W. C.', with autograph note: 'An Essay written originally for a prize, I believe.

On three skins, with the customary tax stamps and ribbon. In fair condition, with some wear along fold lines of the first skin.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He has been 'asked by a gentleman who called here to advise you of publications after Albert Moore &c', and lists five engravings, with prices, the last being, for five guineas, 'a very fine work after <?> etching "A Christmas Carol" | Artist proof on vellum'. He also draws the recipient's attention to 'Phoebe Sir Fredk Leighton cut of which I enclosed'.

Both catalogues disbound from a volume of pamphlets, and bound together with library stitching. Aged and worn, with wear and chipping to extremities. The first (1769) catalogue with library shelfmark in manuscript on reverse of title-leaf. Flyleaf with ownership inscription of 'R. N. Wornum | 1855' and note 'Reprinted at the expense of Sir Thomas Lawrence'. First (1769) catalogue: 15pp., 4to. On laid paper with crown and monogram 'G R' watermark. Second (1770) catalogue: 22pp., 4to. On wove paper with '1825' watermark.

7pp., folio, paginated 338-344. A complete set of accounts for the period from 11 October 1786 to 31 December 1787, on four loose leaves, with the recto of the first leaf blank apart from pagination to 337. Signed at end: 'Errors excepted | Culmore 31st Decr 1787 | Robt. Bateson', and signed 'Jas Henry'. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. An interesting document, revealing some distress among the tenants. The first entry relates to 'arrears due by Insolvent Tenants at Novr.

On both sides of a 9 x 11 cm piece of paper. Very good, with a piece of mount adhering to one corner. Recto reads: 'Neither Fanny nor I can resist the great kindness of your note. If what you write be so consolatory it is natural to expect still more gratification from seeing you. I cannot go till Monday after Lectures. But unless I should be prevented by a relapse which I hope is not probable [...]'. Verso reads: '[...] Afftly | J Mackintosh'.

33pp., 8vo. In brown printed wraps. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets, and with library stitching on spine. Aged and worn, with stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to damaged front cover. Covers and last leaf loose. 82 lots with unusually detailed descriptions. Mostly devoted to British artists, the collection included a Constable, couple of Turners, three Gainsboroughs and four by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC or WorldCat at Oxford.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with one short closed tear along a crease line. Docketted on reverse: 'Majr Williams | 17 Sept 1812'. The letter begins with a paragraph of instructions regarding the payment of a sum of money to his sister. The final paragraph reads: 'This Batt. is at present in the Queen for a passage to Guetania which place we are going to attac [sic] with about 5000 Spaniards and the two Battalions of Marines - our own Trooper is full of Spaniards.' He concludes by sending his best regards to the recipient's father.

1p., landscape 12mo (16 x 20.5 cm). Addressed on reverse 'To | John Bowring Esqre | 6 Freeman's Court | Cornhill'. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded into a packet for hand-delivery. Written in a crabbed, difficult hand. Begins: 'Tomorrow I will send you a copy of my Character [clearly 'The Life and Character of the Duke of Wellington', which is however generally ascribed to his namesake the Earl of Ellesmere], which you will see <?> Blaquiere <?> is just now in demand. Also a work which i can only lend him. <?> The Fragment ought [last word underlined three times] to be sent'.

On 8.5 x 11 cm grey compliments slip printed in blue of 'Professor Sir Claus Moser, K.C.B., C.B.E., F.B.A. | Director'. In very good condition. The autograph, in red ink, reads: 'Best Regards | CM'.

[36]pp., 12mo. In olive wraps printed in green. Printed on art paper with 17 photographic illustrations (14 of them of the house), and the last four pages carrying advertisements. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Disbound from a collection of pamphlets ('13' in manuscript at head of front cover), and with library stitching at spine. Uncommon: five copies on COPAC and WorldCat, but none at the British Library or in North America.

1p., folio. In fair condition, aged and worn, with two punch holes at head. The letter begins by drawing the recipient's attention to an 'enclosed statement relating to Emanuel Hospital. | The principals involved are of great public interest and apply to every educational endowment throughout the kingdom | They involve: - | The confiscation of property | The arbitrary removal of Governors against whom no complaint is alleged. | Entire disregard of the charter of foundation | The absolute prohibition of the gratuitous education of the poor except as the result of competitive examination'.

Copy agreement: 2pp., 4to. Letter: 1p., 4to. The two on a single bifolium, with the agreement on both sides of the first leaf and the letter on the recto of the second. Beneath this, in another hand, in pencil: 'now in China | 1858'.
