EPHEMERA

The Van Diemen's Land Company was formed in 1824 by a group of London merchants, including Charles Richard Fenwick (1822-1888) and Thomas Dyer Edwardes (d.1912), to supply wool for the British textile industry. It received a Royal Charter the following year. In 1826 it was granted 350,000 acres in the northwest of the country. It established its headquarters at Circular Head. The company retains much of the original land grant and is believed to be the last chartered company still operating in Tasmania.

8vo, 40 pp. Unpaginated. Stitched as issued. In original blue wraps. Fair, on lightly-aged and foxed paper, in grubby and stained wraps. The examination papers, covering fields including Latin, Greek and French; scripture; ancient and modern history; mathematics, chemistry and chemistry, cover 31 pp, and are of more than enough difficulty to support those claiming a decline in British educational standards. Also present are lists of the school's governors and masters, and of prize scholarship winners, with the last page giving the subject's for the following years prizes.

8vo, 4 pp. Neatly printed on watermarked laid paper. Fair, though slightly grubby and creased. The words 'First Issue' are in the top left-hand corner of the first page. The heading reads 'Trinity College, Cambridge. | June 21 and 22, 1899. | The following Members of the College have accepted the invitation of the Master and Fellows to dinner on June 21. The date placed opposite to each name is that of the year in which the first degree was taken, and the order is that in which the names stand on the College Boards'. The earliest graduates date from 1858 and the latest from 1865.

4to, 2 pp. On a bifolium. Neatly printed on watermarked laid paper. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The first paragraph reads 'I BEG to inform you that you will be [last two world replaced by 'are'] of standing to take the degree of M.A.

4to, 12 pp. Stapled pamphlet. In original green printed wraps. Text clear and complete. On aged, creased and spotted paper, with rusted staples. Giving the prices ('Rs. As. P') of items ranging from 'Asparagus French tin' to 'Zymale tooth paste'. The last page lists prices for cigars, cigarettes and tobacco. Ownership signature of 'Mr. Lewis' at head of front wrap.

The flong is 31.5 x 19 cm. Stamped on reverse 'LIGHT'S - "IDEAL" | HAND CASTING | DRY STEREO FLONG'. Small triangle missing from the top left-hand corner, causing the loss of the first letter of the first line (the 'P' in 'PRINTERS'); apart from that text clear and complete. Top right-hand corner slightly dogeared, crease along one rule, and thin strip of wear at foot (not affecting text). An interesting piece of printing ephemera.

12mo, 2 pp. In bifolium. On yellow paper. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with slight traces on the second leaf from the mounting of the letter. An amusing and characteristic piece of Roycroft ephemera. The letterhead describes 'The Roycrofters' as 'Makers of de luxe books, hand-made furniture and ornamental iron work. Printers and publishers of the Philistine and Little Journeys'.

On one side of a piece of paper 28 x 22 cm. Text clear and complete. Aged and creased, with two small areas of slight loss (not affecting text) and closed tears. Part of previous mount adhering to the reverse. Twenty-four lines beneath the title, with the whole enclosed within a border. Begins: 'It is proposed to establish, in the midst of the dense population of Bedminster and Redcliff, a nursery for children under three years of age.' Ends 'Rev. A. H.

Printed on one side of a piece of laid paper, 24.5 x 20 cm. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with 3 cm closed tear at edge along fold line. Nicely printed. Twenty lines in Latin, including five graces. The first reading 'Placeat vobis, UNDERGRADUATI, ut Dominum PROCANCELLARIUM non plus quam natura jamdudum est ludibrio habeatis.' In manuscript on the reverse: 'Ask William to translate the enclosed to you | All Well. | CL.' From the album of Rev. William Done Bushell (1838-1917).

Crisply printed on one side of a piece of laid paper (27.5 x 15.5 cm) with watermark 'C ANSELL | 1854'. Margins trimmed. The Christ's Hospital crest at head. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with minor evidence of previous mounting on the reverse. Twenty-six lines of text. Addressed to 'Worshipful Sir', who has been 'Nominated, Approved, and Appointed a Governor of CHRIST'S HOSPITAL'.

12mo (leaf dimensions 19 x 12 cm), 3 pp. Bifolium. Printed on pink paper. Text clear and complete. Creased, and with the blank reverse of the second leaf adhering to a leaf from a contemporary album. The first page is headed 'Clifton College. Choir Concert, Wednesday evening, December 20, 1865.' It gives the names of the stewards, organist, conductor and members of the choir (divided into 'Treble, 1mo', 'Treble, 2do', alto, tenor and bass). The programme, in two parts, covers the central two pages, with music by Mendelssohn, Rossini, Handel, Spohr and others. From the album of Rev.

4to (leaf dimensions 21.5 x 17.5 cm), 3 pp. Bifolium. On green paper. The central two pages carry a 'arms', 'motto' and 'biography' of each of the 'Dramatis Personae': 'Sir Attaboy de Walloper', 'Sir Kolynos Dent', 'Sir Bottholm Duster' and 'Sir Guinness Comme-Boisson'. The targets of this lighthearted satire are lost. Beside each character is an Indian name (the last being 'L/Def. Mohmed Sultan Khan'). There are also nine Indians named as playing herald, pages and varlets. No copy on COPAC.

Both items would appear to date from around the same period. ITEM ONE ('Entrance Scholarships.'): On one side of a piece of paper 21 x 13 cm. Good, on aged paper, with slight loss to one margin, and part of leaf on which it was mounted still adhering to the blank reverse. Laying out the details in six sections. Signed in type at foot: 'H. MONTAGU BUTLER, | Head Master.' ITEM TWO ('Form'): On one side of a piece of paper 18.5 x 11.5 cm. Good, on aged paper, with part of leaf on which it was mounted still adhering to the blank reverse. Numbered from 1 ('Psalm.') to 11 ('The Blessing.').

Printed on one side of a piece of wove paper, 20 x 12.5 cm. Good, on aged paper, with remains of mount adhering to the reverse.

In fair condition, with a little damp-staining at the head of the first leaf (with minimal effect on the text), and a tiny dab of the same staining continuing at the corner of each leaf (not affecting the text). Title-page on cover illustrated by C. H. Dennis, showing Uncle Sam sharpening a razor of 'GOOD CUTS'. Note on page 2 begins: 'THIS CUT BOOK contains a few of the many varieties and styles of cuts which we carry in stock and use on your printing free of charge. We have many more and are constantly adding new designs. [...]'.

The collection assembled by William Done Bushell (see Item Nine), later a senior master at Harrow School. All nine items clear and complete. On aged paper, discoloured by the glue used in mounting. The first eight are printed, and the last is in manuscript. ITEM ONE: 'Classical Tripos. | 1861.' 4to, 1 p. Names the examiners, and those of the students (with colleges), under columns for the first, second and third classes. ITEM TWO: Headed 'List of Honors at the Bachelor of Arts' Commencement, January 26, 1861.' 4to, 1 p.

The collection in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with occasional wear and chipping to extremities (but see Item Fourteen below). Text of all but one item clear and complete. The first seven items were formerly attached through a pin-hole in the top inner corner of each. The others carry traces of the stubs and leaves to which they were attached in an album. Ranging in size from 26 x 21 cm to 19 x 12 cm. ITEM ONE: 'St. John's College Kitchen' by 'Wm. Garnett, Steward'. 12mo, 2 pp. On bifolium. Undated.

Printed in double column on both sides of a wove piece of paper, 44 x 28.5 cm. Clear and complete. Very good, on slightly-aged and grubby paper. In a variety of types and font sizes, but mostly in small print. The whole clearly laid out for folding as a packet. Includes a description of Dorrington's business, in which he boasts that his is 'The Cheapest Establishment in London for Wood Engravings', supplying 'Lithography in all its branches, At lower charges than by any other Artist'.

Printed on one side of a piece of grey paper, 22.5 x 16 cm. Text clear and complete. In fair condition: lightly-aged and with remains of stub adhering to the blank reverse, on which a clean closed tear has been unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Nine regulations are listed, from 'I. No Person will be nominated to a Cadetship in the Royal Navy, who shall be under 12 or above 14 years of age at the time of his first Examination.' to 'IX. After having completed twelve months' instruction, exclusive of vacations, in the Training Ship, a Cadet will have to undergo the final examination.

Large 8vo (33 x 21 cm), 6 pp. Four-leaf pamphlet, with the final leaf blank. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged and worn paper, with minor rust marks from removed staples. On the first page are twelve sections under the headings 'Letter Air Mails' and 'Parcel Air Mails'. The following four pages carry the table of 'Letter Air Mails', in columns with headings including Route, Air Fee, and Observations. The final page contains a table of 'Parcel Air Mails' and further observations.

Apparently originally on a bifolium, the two pages are now each trimmed and on a separate leaf (the first 21 x 10.5 cm and the second 17.5 x 11 cm), and each laid down on a page removed from an album. The reverses are blank. On aged, discoloured paper. The first page is headed 'Great Western Cooking Depot, Specially opened for the Working Classes.

Around 140 items, laid down on 53 pp of a contemporary 37 x 25 cm stapled scrapbook. In original red and orange wraps, with 'Edinburgh Festival 1958' in manuscript on front cover. The collection is in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with occasional items a little discoloured from mounting. The scrapbook itself is slightly grubby and ruckled. Collected by Victor Conn of Eltham, London, who was presumably responsible for the neat captions to some newspaper cuttings and other items.

Gallup C552. 4to (leaf dimensions 28 x 22.5 cm), 40 pp. Stapled. In original blue printed wraps. Worn and dogeard on aged paper, with minor staining at foot of front wrap and first leaf. The 'Calendar' at the front lists, on 4 July [1950], the 'Lecture by Mr. T. S. Eliot, O.M.: "What Dante Means to Me," with H.E. the Italian Ambassador in the Chair.' The printed version, titled 'TALK ON DANTE | by T. S. Eliot', is in small type, and covers pages 13 to 18, with p.12 carrying a full-page photograph of Eliot shaking hands with a smiling figure (presumably the ambassador).

A curious document which, whether it emanates from the British Foreign Office or not, provides valuable insight into informed British opinion on China in the period following the First World War. Printed on fourteen 34 x 21.5 cm leaves, paginated 1-13 with title on fourteenth leaf. On paper with the Britannia watermark of Waterlow and Sons Limited, London. Stapled. Text clear and complete on aged and foxed paper.

On one side of a piece of wove paper roughly 18 x 12 cm. Headed 'ADVERTISEMENT.' and signed in type 'LEWIS CARROLL. | Christmas, 1893.' Twenty-eight lines of text. In good condition on lightly-aged and spotted paper. Begins 'For over 25 years, I have made it my chief object, with regard to my books, that they should be of the best workmanship attainable for the price.

All but three of the silhouettes are laid down on 23 pages of an album of 32 leaves (leaf dimensions 31 x 25 cm) bound in worn brown buckram, with attractive metallic cobweb endpapers. In very good condition. The three silhouettes not in the album are laid down on a loose piece of blue paper (22 x 27 cm) and consist of three full length portraits of infant girls. One of these is the largest silhouette in the collection at 14.5 x 7 cm. The smallest, less than a centimeter high by half a centimeter wide, is of a golfer taking a swing. A delightful collection, including portraits of 'J.

An attractive and delicate piece of ephemera, dusty and slightly tarnished, but in very good condition overall. Skilfully manufactured and giving a convincing metallic appearance. 15 cm wide from opposing points of the star, which is of gold card overlaid with silver silver card, both types embossed in a pattern of pearls of different sizes radiating out from the centre, over which sits the Reichsadler, of embossed black card, 6 cm high by 7 cm wide, crowned, with wings outstretched, orb and sceptre in its talons.

All three items good. Item One: Prospectus and application form, headed 'The Anti-German League. Introduction by the Founder.' Three pages, in a bifolium. Leaf dimensions 27.5 x 21.5 cm. Printed in blue. The 'Introduction' covers the first two pages, flanked by columns bearing the words 'Lest We Forget.' and 'MOTTO: "Everything German Taboo." ' It includes the headings ' "Made in Germany" - The Mark of the Beast' and 'The Alien Menace'.

Printed on one side of wove paper roughly 41.5 x 17 cm. Text clear and complete. On aged, creased and grubby paper. In two columns, headed by the title and royal crest. Begins 'Bannatyne's Key to the Almanack gives the following account of Sts Crispin and Crispianus, brothers, [...]'. Concludes: 'In a short time Crispin ascended the throne, [...] he was sainted and the Shoemakers, through gratitude for the privileges conferred on them, made him their tutelar saint'.
