Folio volume of 127pp. (paginated in red pencil) of typescripts and manuscripts, with three printed items extracted from magazines, bound in black cloth, with the front cover stamped in gilt with the title 'John Belfield Gadd | 1895-1918. | Some Of His Published and Unpublished Articles'. A good-natured and entertaining collection of seventeen essays and two plays, strongly hinting at unfulfilled promise.

Printed on one side of a piece of 15cm square card. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Four numbered instructions, preceded by: 'There would be a great need for extra bed coverings for children should evacuation ever take place. Suitable covers can be made by sewing together squares knitted up from scraps of wool. They will always be useful even if, as we all hope, they are not needed for their original purpose.' This initiative can be dated from a reference in 'Home & Country' magazine, 1939. Scarce: no copy traced in the Imperial War Museum or elsewhere.

Main headings: 'General Conditions', 'Special Notes' [sub headings for Chairman (Elocution and Manner; Subject Matter; Procedure; Manner of Handling Meeting); Speaker; Proposer and Seconder; Team Work], 'The National Anthem', 'Marking Sheets' and 'Declaring Result'. Scarce: no copy traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

Clifford was introduced to the laying of Atlantic telegraph cables by Sir Charles Bright, whose wife was his cousin. He served as an engineer on all the Atlantic cable expeditions from 1857 to 1866, designing the paying-out machinery used on the Great Eastern in 1865 and 1866. He worked at Greenwich as chief engineer for the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company until his retirement in 1894. ONE: From Blackheath; 6 April 1892. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Signed 'H. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. On aged paper, with short closed tear at head of first leaf and traces of mount on blank reverse of second leaf. Written in a hurried and difficult hand. The letter begins: 'Dear Senior | We are most happy to hear that we are to have the pleasure of seeing you and Mrs Senior.' After discussing arrangements he comments: 'You will find Ireland much improved, abundance of employment every where.' He concludes by suggesting two railway stations to alight at, as 'our branch is not yet finished'.

Duplicated typescript. 5pp., foolscap 8vo. On five leaves, pinned together. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Apparently typed up from shorthand notes of the lecture. A couple of manuscript notes were added before the item was duplicated (including the words 'Seize the object' on p.3). A reference to the response by 'Roland' to Frederick Scott Oliver's 'Ordeal of Battle' fixes the earliest date of publication at 1916. A surprising piece: combining an openness to new military ideas with an old-fashioned militarism.

ONE ('Table Card'): 6pp., on three 22 x 9.5 cm leaves. In good condition, on aged paper, with small punch hole at top inner corner. Intended for officers directing physical training, and consisting of four tables (one to a page), numbered I to IV, with 'Notes on Physical Training' on the last page. Each of the first three tables is divided into 'Introductory Exercises', 'General Exercises' and 'Final Exercises'. Table IV is headed 'PRELIMINARY BOMBING EXERCISE.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper, with some repairs to the chipped extremities. Begins: 'I have carefully examined this account and various papers connected therewith: and have received detailed verbal & written explanations thereof from Mr. Wood; I have carefully considered Messrs. Byrne's & Darley's report thereon; [...]'. Concludes: '[...], I am of opinion that Mr.

5pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with the last leaf tipped-in onto a piece of board. An interesting document, filled with valuable detail. The RAMC is not mentioned, but from the context Stephens would appear to have been a member. Writing from an unidentified location, he begins by explaining that his division 'came out of the line a few days ago, and has been making its way slowly back for a rest. [...] we are staying on here for a bit, and are busy transporting civilians to their homes from villages all over the countryside.

[44]pp., 8vo, paginated 487-530. Rebound in modern red cloth binding, with red leather label on cover, with title 'ADDRESS TO HRH PRINCESS CHARLOTTE' in gilt. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn.

The three items come from the papers of an Anglo-German City of London stockbroker, with Item One, below, indicating that he was based in Germany between 1898 and 1909, and that he had moved to England by 1917. A major point of interest is the fact that the material has been assembled by an educated, intelligent and well-informed individual with good knowledge of both German and English economic realities, at a time of high conflict between the two nations. The petition, in Darwin's hand, reads: 'To the Manager of the Great Northern Railway Company | We the undersigned residents at Cambridge have often occasion to pass the day in London, and frequently make use of the admirable train service provided by your Company. | The afternoon is the time usually devoted to our business, and we are often pressed for time or compelled to stay over in London, because there is no train leaving London after 5 p.m.

4pp., 4to. On four leaves attached at one corner by a brass stud. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The proposal of the 'scheme' covers the first two pages, with the first page headed with the associations name and address, with a list of the eleven members of the 'Central Committee', headed by the Marquis of Lincolnshire, and including 'Sir RIDER HAGGARD' (who must surely have had a hand in the document's composition), and the secretary E. T. Brown.

2pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. A florid apology, beginning: 'The very kind consideration extended to me by yourself and the other managers of your admirable association appears to demand from me something more than a renewed Confession of incapacity on my part.' He has been 'at work almost all the time that other people have been making holiday, without finding time to leave my more imperative labours for the compilation of the paper which I should have wished to present'. He continues in the same tone, with the reminder that he 'at first expressed to Mr.

Chappell gained a degree of fame with the publication of this poem in the Daily Express of 22 August 1914. The poem is addressed to the German people, and concerns the supposed toast among German army officers in the lead-up to the First World War, 'Der Tag' (i.e. 'the day' on which the war with England would commence). The poem is printed in portrait alignment on one side of a 14 x 8.5 cm postcard, within red and blue ink borders, giving a 'red white and blue' effect. Beneath the title in square brackets is the following: 'The author of this magnificent poem is Mr.

Internally good, in worn wraps with front hinge torn at head around a third of the total length. Inscribed on front free endpaper: 'with affectionate remembrance | from | F. W. Bourdillon'. The booklet contains ten poems, tastefully printed, and all relating directly or indirectly to the Great War. Titles include: 'The Coming of the Oversea Armies', 'A Lamentation over Belgium' and 'Lord Roberts'. Not common: seven copies on COPAC.

The envelope is 27.5 x 12.5 cm, and the cartoon is printed lengthwise (around 15cm long including caption) on the front in brown ink, with facsimile signature. In good condition, lightly-aged and worn, with the flap of the apparently-empty envelope gummed back into place. The stamp is attached in its customary place, with the address in Thomas's autograph beneath it: 'Wm. Booth Esq | The Rosery | Cambridge Rd. | Felixstowe'. Thomas's original cartoon had been drawn in ten minutes for the Weekly Dispatch 'Smokes for Tommy' campaign.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on aged, creased and worn paper. The poem features under the title 'Liberty Imperilled' in Roberts's collection 'Charing Cross and Other Poems of the Period' (1919), and the context suggests that the poem was composed at the commencement of the First World War. The sonnet begins: 'Not without cause just and unshakeable | Will we surrender up the cherished prize | Of individual liberty, so well | and nobly held'.

Henry Wentworth Windsor Aubrey was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Dorset Regiment Militia on 21 April 1875, and resigned his commission three years later. He qualified as a Doctor in 1885 and practiced in Clifton, where he was a keen cricketer and golfer. During the First World War he served in the RAMC, reaching the rank of Temporary Captain (Home) on 1 December 1917. 2pp., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with a couple of minor water stains to one corner.

19pp., foolscap 8vo. Found in a tatty file marked 'War Office' (discarded!). Not duplicated, rather a carbon copy in purple ink of a typescript, with the indentation of the type apparent on the reverse. Minor correction on p.14: 'practises' to 'practised'. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with each of the nineteen leaves carrying punch-holes for a ring binder. An important document, written in characteristic style, quoted in the fourth volume of Churchill's 'World Crisis'. Divided into 31 numbered parts, beginning: '1.

1p., 8vo. On grey paper. Aged and worn, with chipping, glue stains and remains of gummed label. Laid down on leaf removed from album. The document reads: '548 [i.e. the number of the despatch] | Kabul 28 Decr | To O.C. Jagdalah. | In continuation of this office No 544 the O.C. is directed to request he will at once arrange to send a sufficient party to hold Seh Baba. | He is also to arrange to escort the <?> sent with Capt Tucker as far as Lataband or Butkhak if necessary, on their return journey. | They should return on Wednesday'.

2pp., 4to. On worn and aged paper, unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. The prospectus is on one side of the leaf, headed in capitals 'Money obtained by the sale of war savings certificates will be used by the Commonwealth for war purposes only.' The reverse carries the 'Form of Application for Commonwealth of Australia 4 1/2 Per Cent. 3 Years' War Savings Certificate.' The form has been completed and signed by Lieutenant J. Moss, at Selborne Chambers, Howard Street, Perth, with an application for £875.
