In fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn grey printed wraps strengthened at the spine with brown tape. Headings include 'Provision for training in Economics and Political Science', 'Character and Objects of School', 'Methods of Organisation', and 'Property of the School and the Library'. Also the 'complete curriculum of the School', pp.9-17, and list of lecturers (pp.17-20). 'A Brief Description': 7pp., 4to.

The collection in fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. With labels, stamps and shelfmarks of the Board of Education Reference Library. A broken run of twenty issues from 1919-1920 to 1930-1931 (12 issues), issue for 1931-1932 lacking, and from 1932-1933 to 1938-1939 (7 issues), and finally the issue for 1945-1948. Octavo, in uniform cream wraps, and ranging in length from 104pp. (first in series, 1919-1920) to 283pp. (last in series, 1945-1948).

The two items bound together in green morocco quarter-binding with marbled boards. On aged paper, with front board and title leaf of first pamphlet detached from rest of volume, and lacking spine. Label, shelfmark and stamp of the Board of Education Reference Library. ONE: 'The Common School Acts of Upper Canada; and the Forms, Instructions, and Regulations for executing their Provisions; together with the Particulars Addressed to the Various Officers concerned in the Administration of the School Law; By the Chief Superintendent of Schools.' 143 + 1pp., 12mo.

Nicely printed on thick watermarked laid paper, roughly 56 x 78 cm. Plate dimensions roughly 40.5 x 64 cm. Even creases from folding of map four times. Fair, with a little discoloration along folds and very slight wear and loss fold junctions. At foot of plate: 'The Scale is 96 Rods to One Inch.' Only two copies of this item located: the first, in the British Library Department of Maps describes it as showing 'existing and intended drainage systems. Engraving style and date suggests hand of Charles John Downes, engraver for maps accompanying Hasted's History of Kent'.

One punch hole to top inner corner of each leaf (for the attaching of the item to others), affecting two words of text, pencil shelfmarks and the number '16.' in red ink at head of first page. Lightly creased on aged paper, with three horizontal fold lines. Williams and Madan 282B ('The Lewis Carroll Handbook', pp.198-199).

Both items bound together in nineteenth-century worn brown-cloth 8vo binding, with 'THE JUBILEE 1827' in gilt on the spine. Ownership inscription on front pastedown of the actor and theatrical writer Hallam Fordham, dated Oxford 1942. The four plates (each 29 x 23.5 cm) are loose and unframed, in fair condition, aged and worn, with no margins, chipping to the edges, and with the corners cut off at a diagonal. Each title written in pencil in a contemporary hand on the reverse of the print, each with a price of '6d'. The subjects are not depicted in unattractive style, and are certainly not grotesques, but they are shown as 'simple', untroubled individuals, with the usual happy, gleaming brown faces and shiny white teeth.

366pp., narrow folio (16 x 40 cm). 43 lines to the page. In original vellum binding, with covers ruled in blue. On front cover printed label of 'PERKS & LLEWELLYN, | Dispensing & Family Chemist, | HIGH STREET, HITCHIN.' Marbled edges and endpapers. First leaf with 5 cm closed tear. Written out in black ink, in two or three different hands, with the granting of credit recorded in red. Containing a mass of information about local history, product and price. Early entries are stamped with date, later entries have date written out.

56 items, comprising an unbroken run of 53 issues from 1911 to 1963, together with the issues for 1967 and 1969, and a copy of the 'Report of the Buchan School Commission | July, 1951'. In two sturdy green cloth boxes ('Supplied for the Public Service'). All 56 items with stamps, shelfmarks and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library. The first eleven issues (ending in 1921) are more substantial than the rest, and are housed in the first box.

216pp., 8vo, paginated i-viii, 6-212. With numerous engravings of views and plans of schools, 'school architecture' (desks, blackboards and so on), and diagrams and illustrations of gymnastics. Divided into three sections: 'School Architecture', 'School Economy and Discipline' and 'Selections for public Recitation in Schools'. Two-page appendix: 'New Brick School House at Simcoe, County of Norfolk'. In original printed wraps of cloth backed with card. In fair condition, on aged paper, in heavily worn wraps. The volume contains an interesting selection of stamps and labels.

On aged and brittle paper, archivally repaired and bound in sturdy modern blue buckram binding by the Ministry of Education Reference Library (whose stamps and labels the volume carries), with white typed label on front board. Binding in very good condition. A detailed report, with numerous tables, and eighteen case studies including financial and other information including 'Teacher's report' and 'Investigator's report'. Scarce: no copies on COPAC or (other than eBooks) on OCLC WorldCat.

The records of the firm of G. and G. H. Crowther, Land Agents and Surveyors, Huddersfield, are in the West Yorkshire Archives in Kirklees, which also holds other Crowther material in the papers of the Clarke-Thornhill family of Fixby Hall. Local historian Edward J.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn grey paper. The only reference to a 'Tory' in Christabel Coleridge's 'Charlotte M. Yonge, Her Life and Letters' (London, 1903) is to one of Yonge's two kittens, born on the Queen's birthday in 1900. In a letter to Coleridge, 17 July 1900, she states that 'Tory is banished', and on 1 August 1900 she reports that she has seen 'Tory in his new abode - also stepped on him'. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the letter is a playful one, addressed to his new owner.

8vo: 49 pp. The last page is mispaginated '54', but there is no gap in the text, and the catalogue of the Bibliotheque Nationale confirms that the number of pages of text is 49. Good, in modern marble wraps. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title-page 'A Monsieur Maison Secretaire général de l'administration des hospices hommage respectueux | [signed] P. Mondat'.

2pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. A florid apology, beginning: 'The very kind consideration extended to me by yourself and the other managers of your admirable association appears to demand from me something more than a renewed Confession of incapacity on my part.' He has been 'at work almost all the time that other people have been making holiday, without finding time to leave my more imperative labours for the compilation of the paper which I should have wished to present'. He continues in the same tone, with the reminder that he 'at first expressed to Mr.

Both items 1p., 4to. ONE: 26 May 1904. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He has always shrunk from 'giving advice to anyone concerning investments', but would consider 'the £10 shares of the London Necropolis Company at 7 1/2 as being safe to buy for investment.' He discusses the state of the company, and also suggests 'Japanese bonds'. TWO: 2 August 1905. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with short closed tears to a central crease. 'I am doing what I can to ensure the permanency of our work, but you are doubtless aware that the O.G.A.

According to Smiles's entry in the Oxford DNB, he was 'prominent in the negotiations for the amalgamation of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway [by which he was employed] with the North Eastern, which was effected in 1854 and abolished his own office. Thereupon he left Leeds for London on being appointed secretary to the South Eastern Railway (11 November). He held the post for twelve years, in the course of which he successfully arranged for the extension of the line from Charing Cross to Cannon Street (1858–9).

2pp., 8vo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. She apologises for not being able to be 'helpful on any of your questions'. She does not even possess a copy of her own 'Designing and Making Stage Costume'. 'I have no Motley designs at all, as every one which was in my possession has been sold to the University of Illinois, who have taken the whole collection of about 3000 swatches.' She is glad to hear that he has some of them, 'as it means that there are a few still in this country'.
