Printed Ephemera

Card with illustrated portrait in brown and black of the Prince (in English military uniform with 'V[ictoria] R[egina]' badge), 10.5 x 6.5 cm, mourning border. Good, with a little pitting at head (not affecting image). The five postcards, all roughly 8.5 x 13.5 cm, are all very good, on lightly discoloured card. They are captioned 'The Tomb of the Prince Imperial', 'Mausoleum Farnborough', 'FARNBOROUGH HILL. Residence of H.I.M. the Empress Eugenie', 'The tomb of H.I.M Napoleon 3' and 'Residence of H.I.M. the Empress Eugenie'. Also included is a thirty-two-line biographical cutting by 'R.

On a piece of paper 24 x 15.5 cm. Dimensions of image roughly 6.5 x 6 cm. Paper heavily foxed and creased at foot. Image clear and uncreased. Titled 'CHAPELLE.' Head-and-shoulders engraving of a tousle-haired Chapelle, with open white shirt, waistcoat and cloak hanging off shoulders.

Foolscap bifolium (leaf dimensions 33 x 20.5 cm). Good, on aged and lightly creased paper. The letter, the printed text of which invites the recipient to 'forward to this Office a clear description' of his invention, is on the recto of the first leaf. Particularising details and signature by Hall, who has addressed it to 'Commander Paterson R.N. | Brockhurst House | Brockhurst | Gosport | Hants'. Docketed and initialed by Paterson at head. The recto of the second leaf contains a printed 'Memorandum' by W. G.

Approximate dimensions 37 x 35 cm. Cloth backed and divided into twelve rectangles of 12 x 8.5 cm each, arranged in three rows of four. The folded map fits into a contemporary pouch, crudely made for the purpose from card and marbled paper, with a signed label on the front reading 'A Map of England with the Roads | C. H. Patesson <?>'. On aged paper and with the edges of the rectangles curling slightly, in worn pouch. Scale roughly forty miles to an inch and three eighths. Shows cities, boroughs, market towns, villages and roads.

8vo: 3 pp. Lightly creased and aged, but in good condition overall. Text entirely clear and legible. Headed ''African Affairs | Book Review (Pollock)'. A knowledgeable and readable review, for the magazine 'African Affairs', beginning 'Thomas Leask was a modest elephant-hunter with a passion for scribbling. [...] he never seems quite to have got over his surprise at finding himself transplanted from his native Orkney to the land of the lordly Matabele and miserable Mashona.

On one side of an 8vo leaf. Worn and creased, but with text clear and entire. Printed in red ink, and headed 'POST OFFICE TELEGRAMS, S. RHODESIA.' Four strips of text, reading 'CHAMBERLAIN POINTS AT BERCHTESGADEN HITLER SAID THE SUDETENS MUST HAVE SELF DETERMINATION AND RETURN TO THE REICH IF THEY DESIRED AND THAT RATHER THAN WAIT HE WAS PREPARED TO RISK A WORLD WAR = END MESSAGE'. On one side of a piece of green card, 9 x 11 cm. Perforated section at left, for name and address, 9 x 2.5 cm. Very good. Reads 'JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE | (British Section) | EAST LONDON COMMITTEES. | You are cordially invited to attend a presentation of NEW LIFE IN PALESTINE (A Film showing Palestine before and after the Riots) at the RIVOLI CINEMA, WHITECHAPEL, E.1 on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD, AT 2.30 P.M. Speakers: HARRY GOSLING, Esq., M.P., Mrs. I. M. SIEFF, (President, Federation of Women Zionists) Mr. MORRIS MYER will preside. Doors open, 2 p.m. ADMIT TWO. M.

Bifolium (dimensions of the two leaves 14.5 x 22.5 cm), 4 pp. Printed on light-green paper. Lightly worn and creased with one short closed tear. Contains 14 photographs of riders engaged in impressive stunts, including riding through flame, riding upside down and in a pyramid formation. No trace of existence of the troupe appears to have survived. Although in costume, to the ignorant eye they do not look particularly Cossack, and their signatures are not written in Cyrillic. The names, which do not yield any clues either, include 'A Boulanoff' and 'N. Golouboff'.

12mo, 8 leaves opening to make seven sets of columns running across seven pairs of facing pages. Stitched, and within original yellow printed wraps, with rough cloth weave. Lightly aged and worn, but in good condition overall, and free from any manuscript entries (i.e. not filled in). The front wrap is headed by a governmental crest, and carries eleven lines of text. Five lines of text, and the slug, on the back wrap ('The Officers engaged in the discharge of their duties under this Ordinance shall not disclose, except to the Governor, or in due course of law, the name of any Depositor.').

Printed on piece of thick paper 31.5 x 22.5 cm. Dimensions of image 24 x 18 cm. Removed from mount, and with glue adhering to reverse and in thin strip at head (not affecting image). Small closed tear in border at foot, just beneath Mascagni's dating of his note. Soft-focus black and white head and shoulders shot, showing a firm-jawed jowlly bow-tied Mascagni staring abstractedly to his right, with a medal in his buttonhole.

All five items in good condition, with a little rust spotting from a staple. A little wear to the edge of item two, not affecting text. Four of the five stamped with Horton's call sign '2AHN'. Item One: a printed leaflet (4to, 2 pp), dated GENERAL POST OFFICE, | London | March, 1939.', headed 'B | EXPERIMENTS IN WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY | [...] | AUTHORITY FOR SENDING AND RECEIVING | SUMMARY OF CONDITIONS OF ISSUE | NOTE. - All sending stations must also be equipped for reception'. Item Two: Typewritten copy of Horton's 'Application for Experimental Licence 25th.

The sepia photograph, 10 x 7 cm, is a head and shoulders shot of Aslan staring at the viewer in the character of Hamlet holding Yorick's skull. It is neatly mounted on a leaf of cream paper (24 x 20 cm) removed from an album. The whole attractive and in good condition. In a firm, bold hand Aslan has written, across the page beneath the photograph: '"Zu was für schnöden Bestimmungen | wir doch kommen, Horatio"! - | (Hamlet) | Ein Erinnerung | [signed] Raoul M. Aslan: | Wien, Oktober 1923. -'

The sepia photograph, 11 x 4 cm, is a full-length shot of a radiant Jeritza, posing stylishly in Grecian décolleté dress and sandals. It is neatly mounted in the top left-hand corner of a leaf of cream paper (24 x 20 cm) removed from an album. The whole attractive and in good condition. In a large, bold hand Jeritza has written, diagonally across the paper and upwards towards the photograph, 'With best wishes | [signed] Maria Jeritza | 1923.'

One page, in two 62-line columns. Octavo leaf with blank reverse. Good, on lightly aged paper with slight nicking and creasing to edges. Satirical account of 'simple soul' Michael James's dealings with his hypocritical neighbour Susan Elizabeth, who hands him a white feather when he refuses to enlist in the British Army during the Great War. On 'the Day' of the Easter Rising James fights and is wounded and 'thrown into the interment camp at Frongoch'. Susan Elizabeth then becomes 'a great Sinn Feiner.

Attractive image roughly eleven inches by ten wide, captioned 'VIEW OF THE INTERIOR OF THE GREAT INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION, DUBLIN - OPENED MAY 12, 1853.' On piece of paper roughly fourteen and a half inches by eleven. Good on light-foxed aged paper with two neat vertical folds (perhaps indicating removal from a book). At foot of page list of twelve measurements of the 'PRINCIPAL DIMENSIONS OF THE BUILDING', from 'Main Frontage' to 'Width of Outer Gallery'.

Dimensions of image 15.5 x 11 cm. On piece of shiny photographic paper 17.5 x 12.5 cm. Sepia-coloured and slightly faded, with a little creasing to extremities, and minor fading to margin in bottom right-hand corner. Shows a thoughtful Coogan in a head and shoulders shot, with his arms folded, wearing a hat, tweed jacket and bow tie. Message, bottom right, reads 'Good Luck Ken, [signed] Jackie Coogan | 1947'. A carbon, in the hand of the wireless operator, on an official printed 'Post Office Telegraphs' form ('FOREIGN AND COLONIAL TELEGRAMS ONLY'). Good, on aged high-acidity paper, dimensions roughly 12.5 x 19 cm. Neatly laid down on a piece of brown card. Sent on Pickford and Fairbanks' honeymoon voyage to Europe.

Written in pencil by 'Mayhew' on an official printed 'Post Office Telegraphs' form, stamped with telegraph number and dated postmark. Good, on aged high-acidity paper, dimensions roughly 14 x 21.5 cm. Neatly laid down on a piece of brown card. Sent on Pickford and Fairbanks' honeymoon voyage to Europe. The couple have 'received so many lovely messages from friends in England' that Pickford's 'Life Long dream of visiting the old country seems to be all [she] had hoped more [sic] and that saying great deal Douglas is ready to jump from the Top mast the minute we sight Southampton'.

Printed handbill, 2pp., 8vo, edge attached to card, bottom edge curled but text complete. At the top the words "N.B. This narrative of events is not to be taken into the trenches". Obviously an account of a German atttack dealt with and returned by Indian regiments, issued in this form for morale-boosting. Laid down on reverse printed Christmas greetings from Sir John French, Xmas Day, 1914 (a "Special Order of the Day"). Two items,

One page, 4to, closed tears, slightly stained, text complete, a list enclosed in a gold border. Two variants, one headed, "For the Inspection of Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness the Prince Consort, and the two Princesses, on the Occasion of their Visit to Leeds, Sept. 6, 1858" and with footnotes acknowledging the loan of items from "John Young, Esq., Vanburgh Honse [sic], Blackheath" and "the Collection of William Tite, Esq." The other copy has no such information.

One page. Dimensions of paper roughly six and a half inches by eight wide. Spotted, aged and creased, and with some closed tears. Addressed to Wreden at 'Box 56, Palo Alto, Cal., U.S.A.' For '3 reg'd bookpost parcels', and headed 'Hodgson's Sale 25th Nov. 1954'. Lots 204 and 205 purchased for a total of £27 9s 9d, including an apparent commission of 15% on an item under ten pounds, and 10% on one over that sum. Items ('French Documents & Autograph Letters' and 'Autograph Letters from Lord Brougham and contemporaries') described in nine lines.

On wove paper, with watermark '179< >'. Dimensions roughly 22.5 x 39 cm. Very good on lightly aged paper. One small unobtrusive spot of foxing. The illustration is within an oval roughly 21.5 cm wide, enclosed in a decorative box of dimensions 18 x 27.5 cm. A couple of bishops with croziers and a mass of nobles in ermine look on in a vaulted castle hall while Henry II presents what looks like a pie to his bemused offspring, who is seated beneath a canopy.

The cutting consists of the two outer columns of pp.11 and 12, measuring 42 x 15.5 cm, with the article on Marie Lloyd, consisting of forty-four lines of text, covering roughly 12 x 6 cm of the inner column. Good, though a little aged and frayed at extremities, with the article with one small spot covering a word, but with the text entirely legible. First sentence reads 'Percy Courtenay, of 196, Wickham-terrace, Lewisham High-road, was brought up on a warrant before Mr.

Wigwam Club flier on one side of piece of paper, roughly 20 x 13 cm. Very good. Headed with humourous illustration of crowded wigwam on which is written 'No admission except on business'. Jealous, as Honorary Secretary, states that the club, with William Hughes in the Chair, will meet at Anderton's, in Fleet Street, on 19 July 1892. 'In Memoriam' card on both sides of card roughly 9 x 11 cm. Good, though a little grubby, with traces of grey paper mount at foot of reverse. Small sepia photograph of Jealous, roughly 3 x 2 cm, in top left-hand corner of recto.

Quarto: 4 pp. Unbound bifolium. Grubby and creased, with a couple of pin holes and small closed tears, and a little ink staining to the margins (not affecting text). Five illustrations, including full page engraving of two cherubs, entitled 'L'Enfance de l'amour'. Claims that 'neither labour nor expense will be spared to achieve and maintain the highest standard of literary and artistic excellence', and that the magazine will be 'strictly non-political, in the sense that it will champion the views of no particular party'.

The collection is in good condition, with occasional light creasing. The 'Regulations' ('ON HER MAJESTY'S SERVICE') consist of four pages printed on a folio bifolium. The other printed item, in facsimile handwriting, dated '15.11.51' (and dated in manuscript 'Horse Guards 1st.

All items unbound, grubby and creased. ONE. Handbill (12mo, 1 p), dated 'August 1894', annoucing as 'NEARLY READY' William Jolly's 'Ruskin on Education'. TWO. List (quarto, 4 pp), dated 'December 1, 1894', of 'Books Published by George Allen [...] During the last Twelve Months'. THREE. Pamphlet (octavo, 32 pp), dated 'December 1894', of 'Works by John Ruskin, Augustus J. C. Hare and others, Published by George Allen'. Includes full-page advertisement announcing as 'in preparation', T. J. Wise's edition of Spenser's 'Faerie Queen', with illustrations by Walter Crane.

Dimensions of photograph 9 x 5.5 cm. Good sepia image, on backing card with Mayall's details printed in red at foot. Reverse of card mostly covered with remains of previous cream paper mount. This image does not feature among the three portraits of Martin listed in the National Portrait Gallery's online catalogue of its collection.

8vo (each leaf roughly foolscap) bifolium: 3 pp. Well printed on good thick watermarked laid paper. Good, though a little grubby and lightly creased. Thirty-five pieces of business (signed in type by 'CHARLES ABBOT, Speaker'), from the 'Strensham (Worcester) Inclosure Act Amendment' to the 'Irish Lunatic Poor Committee', followed by seven Notices of Motions, ten Orders of the Day and the second reading of a Private Bill ('Dublin Gas Light Bill').

4to: 4 pp. Unbound bifolium. On lightly discoloured and spotted paper, lightly worn at extremities. Central horizontal fold. Gives details of eight lectures, by, successively, H. Finer ('Impressions of America'), Montague Fordham ('The Rural Problem'), R. B. Forrester ('Co-operative Marketing'), Professor R. Peers ('Can we educate the Community?'), Arthur Greenwood, M.P.
