4to, 10 pp. On one side each of ten leaves, attached to one another with a pin. Texts clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with light rust staining to the first leaf, which carries Milne's printed covering letter. The other nine leaves carry a testimonial letter each (the last two being by Henry Russell Andrews and Hubert M. Turnbull), all couched in glowing terms. Eve describes Milne as 'one of the best House-Surgeons I have ever had', and Bertrand Dawson states that his 'record is one of brilliant success'.

4to, 2 pp. On bifolium. Twenty-two lines. Text clear and complete. In good condition, on aged paper. Lady Popham has written her opinion of the letter on the reverse of second leaf: 'Lord Melvilles cold hearted answer -'. To modern eyes the letter would appear to be a model of tact. Melville begins by expressing 'deep regret' at 'the late most afflicting addition to the loss you had already sustained' (the Admiral had died three weeks before).

Typescript (folio, 2 pp), with a couple of manuscript corrections. Fair, on aged paper, with light marks from a paperclip at head. Thirty-six line poem, in heroic couplets, with 'W E G. Christmas 1869' at end, beginning 'Happy the gamester, on whose earliest throw, | Grim Fortune frowns, and cuts his treasure low; | But hapless he, whom luck shall onward lure, | She only means to make his ruin sure.' Made for Sir Robert Joseph Phillimore, of the Courant, Henley on Thames, judge, Liberal MP and lifelong friend of Gladstone's.

4to, 31 pp. In original grey printed wraps, with the bookseller's ticket of Messrs. Bolster of Cork. Text clear and complete. A fair, tight copy, on aged paper. In worn red calf quarter-binding, red cloth. Neatly priced up in manuscript (the sale totalled £803 4s 6d), and ruled with red lines.

12mo landscape, on leaf of pink paper removed from autograph album, with one set of rounded corners. In good condition. Butt's inscription is above Rumford's, and large in comparison. Reads 'Clara Butt - | Rumford' and R. Kennerley Rumford | 11 Oct. 22.'

On piece of light-blue paper, removed from an autograph album. Firm signature. In good condition. Reads 'Robert Easton.'

Folio, 4 pp. Bifolium. On laid paper watermarked with the date 1800. Worn and aged, with small closed tear to second leaf, but with text clear and complete. Ownership inscription on first page of 'Thos. Adam Esqr | Alnwick Northumberland'. The respondents' case, signed in type by William Alexander and Robert Montgomery, is laid out in detail in small print over three pages.

12mo, xi + [vi] + 46 pp. Stitched as issued, in original marbled-paper wraps. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The title leaf is followed by a nine-page preface, taking the pagination to p.xi. The page following p.xi (on the verso of the leaf) is blank, and this is followed by three unpaginated leaves carrying a six-page 'Act of Parliament in Favours [sic] of the Maiden Hospital, Founded by the Company of Merchants and Mary Erskine.' This 'Act', which precedes the 46 pages of the 'Rules and Constitutions', would not appear to be present in all copies.

Both items in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Letter ('Tuesday Mo[rnin]g'): 12mo, 3 pp. Bifolium. Slight trace of previous mount on blank reverse of second leaf. She wanted to offer her 'a box for the Opera of "L'Elixir" this evening, but as we are not to give it I shall postpone sending to you 'till Thursday when we perform the "Trovatore" hoping you will do me the favour to come out and listen to my first attempt in that Opera'. Mentions 'His Excellency The Admiral' and the news of 'poor Mrs. Clay's child'.

12mo, 3 pp. 28 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper. He does not understand how they can have 'a record of a second edition [of Burns's poems] dated 1786, for the book was not published until April 1787'. He describes the two issues of the second edition ('a stinking or a skinking issue') and concludes that he will be glad to hear from them, should they 'meet with a 1786 second edition, or with a copy having the addenda incorporated in the list of subscribers, or one having Roxburgh spelled correctly'.

Handbill, 2pp., 8vo, chipped, fold marks, small closed tears, but text clear and complete. Recruitment of men for Territorial Army (established 1908), giving qualifications, etc: age, height, terms of enlistment, annual requirements, pay during camp and on embodiment (serjeant to Drummer), addresses of committee. Overleaf the Reasons for Joining (defence against ainvasion etc), adding, The heroism of Captain Scott and his gallant comrades in the Antartic [sic] regions should rouse the energy in every Britisher ... This is presumably a reference to the 1904-8 Expedition.

Landscape 8vo, 1 p. Text clear and complete. Fair on aged vellum. Engraving of royal crest in top left-hand corner. Printed in small type and completed in manuscript. Three witnesses, including 'Rich. Robinson' and 'Walt: Robins'. Red wax seal of head, and government stamp on blue. Brief modern notes accompanying the item state that the elder Shaw was born in 1685, the son of the headmaster of Lichfield Grammar School (Johnson's old school), who died in 1704. There is no record of anything published by the Shaws, who do not feature in BBTI.

Most in fair condition, some in poor. The collection comprises: A. One ALS and 3 draft ALSs from Wood (2 apparently incomplete), total 16pp. with some notes, not an easy read: to unknown correspondent (1877) on "public works questions"; to Syed Hussein (1878) checking facts about cultivation in Hyderabad for newspaper article (prob. annotated by Hussein so ALS not a draft); to "Mr Machen[?](no date) about a pamphlet he's just published on the issues of the day; to Col. C.

Large 8vo, 1 p. Thirty-eight lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. '43.' in manuscript in top right-hand corner. Begins: 'As a Proof of the Veracity of Sir Robert Wilson's Account of the tremendously inhuman MURDERS perpetrated at JAFFA by Order of that most sanguinary Monster, and detestable Tyrant, BONAPARTE'. There follows a long quotation from Wittman's 'Narrative of his Travels'. The second paragraph begins 'Englishmen, can you possibly read this Account without Horror?

Folio, 1 p. Bifolium. Text on recto of first leaf; docketed on reverse of second leaf. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged and worn paper. Headed 'Longhoughton | Northumberland'. Signed at foot by the Earl and Countess. Begins 'Licence is hereby Granted to Elizabeth Adams to Lett Lett or Assign over to Robert Adams All That Messuage or Tenement and the Lands thereto belonging with the Appurtenances Lying and being in Longhoughton held of us by Lease for Twenty One yeares from Ladyday One thousand Seven hundred forty and Nine'.

4to, 1 p. In bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf with circular 'RUSHYFORD' postmark in black ink. On aged and creased paper, with traces of mount adhering on second leaf. Giving details of the 'allowance to the Trade', which he admits is 'small', for volumes in large and small paper. 'Only 500 Copies being printed it is not worth my while to push the sale by a large allowance'.

Folio, 1 p. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Removed from an album, and with docketing on second leaf slightly obsucred by thin strip of paper in margin. Written while Huskisson was Secretary to the Treasury, and requiring Sweetland to provide to the Lords Commissioners 'an account of the Revenues of Gibraltar for the last three Years distinguishing the amount under each head of Revenue and also a Statement fo all Payments charged upon the said Revenue'. Despite his achievements, Huskisson is now best-remembered as the first railway fatality.

8vo, vii + 23 pp. Stitched as issued. Text clear and complete. Internally sound, tight and clean; spotting to first and last leaves, with a gummed strip of white paper strengthening the spine. Thin strip along head of title removed, presumably for presentation or ownership inscription. One annotation and two corrections in a contemporary hand. Dedicated by Durrant to John Thomas Wharton of Skelton Castle, 'Bloomsbury Square, London, July 1844.' Three pages of notes at end. Long letter by Tollot, in French. Two Sterne letters, 1764 and 1766, both to Stevenson.

Book: 8vo: xi + 259 pp. Eighteen plates (with the seventh plate, 'A Death Trap', as frontispiece). Fair copy, on lightly aged and foxed paper. In original green binding, gilt, with wear to hinges, corners and head and tail of spine. With autograph inscription of 'V. R. Balfour-Browne, Oxford. February 1901.' A nice association between two notable individuals in the world of field sports. The letter, addressed to 'Dear B. B.', is 12mo, 2 pp, in bifolium; in good condition; laid down by the blank second leaf to the recto of the book's fly leaf.

One page, 4to, dingy paper, fold marks, text clear and complete. Mr Phillips sent a few days since an enrgaving [sic] to Mr Bentley relative to 'Man as he is Vol 4 [Robert Bage, Man As He Is (1792)- he now wants Mr Bentley's reply, as he wishes to [?] out what is become of the Volume. Bentley adds WB never Saw Man as he is, nor Woman as She Should be.---. The note added in a different hand, Note from Richard Phillips afterwards Sir Richard to Mr. W. Bentley & Mr. Bentley's reply written by himself.

8vo, 8 pp.Stitched and disbound. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with slight loss from margins of first leaf. Final paragraph sums up the paper: 'Expressing these data in simpler terms, it appears that for twenty shillings the apothecary should receive 295 doses of Battley's solution, 1700 doses of laudanum, and 1840 of muriate of morphia. The muriate of morphia is at once, then, cheaper and more efficacious than any of the preparations of opium now in general use.'

4to, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged and worn paper. He apologises for 'not sooner answering Capt Grindlay's note and thanking him for the very beautiful drawing which he sent him'. He reports that he showed the drawing to Prince Albert, 'who expressed himself much pleased with it, & admired particularly the grouping of the figures', referring to one of the original drawings for Grindlay's 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, Chiefly on the Western Side of India' (1826-30).

12mo, 1 p. Bifolium. Ten lines. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Addressed, with three postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Capt Grindlay | North Bank | St John's Wood'. Letter of introduction for 'Mr Vivian a Subscriber to the Oriental Translation Fund', who is 'turning his mind to Hindostanee Architecture'. Suggests a date for them to meet, when 'any of your Drawings &c he would be glad to see'. Grindlay was author of 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, Chiefly on the Western Side of India' (1826-30).

12mo, 2 pp. First leaf of letter only. On worn aged paper, with slight loss and chpping to extremities. Docketed by Melville in red at head of first page with date 'Feby 1829'. Begins 'Sir Thos. Lawrence presents his Compts to Captn. Melville Grindlay, [...]'. Thanking Grindlay for the gift of 'his Works from the Scenery and Architecture of India; and from the Sculpture in the Cave Temples of Ellora'. Lawrence has 'received great pleasure from the frequent inspection' of the works. Ends abruptly, at foot of second page, 'and very particularly, from the view <...>'.

Landscape 12mo, 1 p. Fair, lightly-aged and with a punch-hole to the top left-hand corner. 'You will be grieved to learn that Walton excised my boy's sigmoid on June 19 and that he died of acute ileus on June 23.'

12mo, 1 p. Bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of minor traces of stub adhering to one edge. Franked, with remains of red wax seal, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Messrs. Ridgeway | Piccadilly. | [signed] Js Stuart Wortley'. Giving instructions for the sending of newspapers to Wighill Park, Tadcaster, and to Wortley.

12mo, 3 pp. Thirty-three lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of mount on reverse of second leaf, which is docketed 'C. Fane to G. Joy | 19 Augt. 1844'. A significant and interesting letter, on a topic later tackled by Dickens in 'Bleak House', by a judge who was an active member of the Law Amendment Society, and whose decisions, according to his entry in the Oxford DNB, 'were frequently the subject of comment', although 'very few of his judgments were reversed on appeal'.
