3pp., folio. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Bottle | Overseer | Leeds', with Maidstone postmark, and docketted 'Burr's Bill | £24 14s 8d'. In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. Headed 'The Overseers of the Poor of Leeds'. Closely and neatly written, with the forty itemised entries going into unusual detail. The first entry, for 6s 8d, reads: '[April 1817] Att[endin]g. you on Stonham's Son in law hav[in]g. applied to a Magistrate for an Order for relief of his Grandchildren & aftwds upon the Magistrate with you & him & advis[in]g.

One page, 15.5 x 26.5, black-bordered, minor staining, good condition, laid down on detached album leaf. The Times Companionship express their sorrow at John Walter's son's death and give their condolences (January 1871) and John Walter responds, enclosing a translation of a poem written by his deceased son (translation by him from the German of Spitta). The text concludes with the line "In memory of John Balston Walter, who died December 24, 1870, aged 26." The compiler of the album has added "*Mr.

4pp., 12mo. 55 lines of text, written in a neat, clear hand. On bifolium, with second leaf neatly placed in paper windowpane mount. The letter begins: 'I herewith send the electrotype of the Trowel, [not present] which is I think a beautiful specimen of the peculiar but slow process.

2pp., 12mo. In very good condition: lightly-aged and creased. Writing to 'My dear Blumenfeld', Gough begins with a few lines on 'your correspondent, Muir' (with reference to Blumenfeld's 'Yankee' origins -which also included strong anti-Communist sentiment), before giving a general analysis. 'This is a most complex situation out here, as there are so many interests pulling different ways - it is not always easy to see one's way clear.

2pp., landscape 12mo. On cream paper. In matching envelope addressed to 'Miss M. Lynd | 5, Keats Grove | Hampstead | N.W.3' Good, on lightly-aged paper, in worn envelope docketed by Gaster 'From Rose Macaulay re Fascist meeting in the Albert Hall 1935 [sic]?' The letter is addressed to 'Dear B. J.' ('B. J.', short for 'Baby Junior', being Maire Lynd's family nickname). Macaulay begins: 'Many thanks for this, which I return in case it is wanted.

The Oxford DNB entry on Sir Walter Besant states that, 'Concerned to cultivate better understanding with North America, Besant worked in the last two years of his life for the Atlantic Union.' In fact it was Besant who founded the club in 1900, with Conan Doyle and others, with the object, according to The Times, 22 February 1900, 'of drawing together the various English-speaking peoples and strengthening the bonds of union by the formation of ties of personal friendship among individual members'.

7pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums, each with embossed letterhead of the Cambridge Union Society, and 'Joynson Superfine' watermark. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to the Duke of Devonshire, the speech to be found in the collection of Powis's speeches and articles published in 1892. Numerous minor autograph emendations (for example 'shrine devoted' to 'temple dedicated'). This version would appear to be the final draft, as it does not appear to differ from the version published in 1892.

4pp., 4to. Good, on lightly aged and worn paper. With numerous autograph emendations. A significant letter, in which Streeter carefully expounds his position on schism and the union of churches. Streeter divides his response into three numbered sections, the last of which is subdivided into three more. The first section discusses the question of whether the fact that the Church of England 'only allows Episcopally ordained persons to minister the sacraments' is only 'a matter of discipline and Church order'.

Both items in good condition, on aged high-acidity paper. The handbill is printed on one side of a piece of 30.5 x 19.5 cm. paper. The meeting is said to have been 'Presided over by Admiral The Lord Beresford, and there is a list of fifteen individuals by whom the resolutions were supported, beginning with 'J. Havelock Wilson, C.B.E., (President of the National Sailors' and Firemen's Union)' and 'Commander HOUGHTON, R.N.R. (Marine Service Associatio - Masters and Officers - Liverpool)'.

Printed on both sides of a piece of paper., 75 x 102cm. In very good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper. Designed to be placed on a barrack wall, but with no evidence of having been put up. A striking piece of graphic design, with a boldly-coloured map beneath a thick green curving masthead on the front, and another black and white map in the bottom left-hand corner. Headings to the text read: 'Churchill's Return', 'The Russian Tide', 'The Nazi Line', 'After Tunisia . .

2pp., 12mo. Very good, on two leaves of lightly-aged paper. In a difficult hand. The recipient is addressed as 'B. F. Ainger, Delegate to Editorial Committee, <?> Excursion'. The first two pages of the letter only, hence lacking Brainard's signature. Having seen Ainger's name 'among the delegates from Pennsylvania', he is 'strongly reminded of a Maj B. F. Ainger formerly of the 2nd. <?> Artillery with whom I had the pleasure of an acquaintance long ago when we were watching the Defences of Bermuda Honduras &c.

She has been 'struck down by a return of a trouble that I thought I had been cured of 15 years ago - entérite or colitis - and so I have had to have a doctor and go onto a régime'. Her husband is 'staying on to take the girls about' and they will all return to England in a week. She thanks her for recommending a hotel, but fears that 'the Boulevard Montmartre would be too noisy'.

Crisply printed on one side of a piece of 9 x 14 cm card, with Boyd's signature in blue ink, and Vassall's name typed. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Having been expelled from the Communist Party in 1941, Driberg joined the Labour Party in 1945; he would be elected to the National Executive throughout 1949-72 and was chairman of the party in 1957-8. The collection is in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with occasional minor rust staining from paperclips.
