The first page is headed 'THE ACID TEST', and carries an announcement by Maurice, Roberts and Dryhurst, reading: 'The Georgia Committee, first formed in 1906 as the "Georgia Relief Committee," was revived in 1922 by the friends of Georgian Independence, and is open for membership to all supporters of the Rights of Small Nations.

A loose 8vo leaf, roughly 26.5 x 19.5cm. In fair condition, on aged paper, with the edges strengthened with cream paper strips. The cover is decoratively printed, in a variety of types and point sizes. Priced at two shillings, and stated to be entered at Stationers' Hall. At the foot of the page, in capitals: 'The present arrangement is copyright; and the only correct edition of this beautiful negro melody in which the words are faithfully true to the original story, so popular among the negros [sic] in Alabama.' The reverse carries the beginning of the song, by 'Edwd.

4pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He gives his 'best thanks' for his correspondent's 'watchful kindness'. As his 'acquaintance with Academicians is very limited', he has 'not yet solicited any one to propose me at the R.A.', and he 'would gladly accept Mr. E. M. Ward's obliging offer - and think Mr. G. D. Leslie or Mr Dobson would second me'. He made 'such a mistake' the previous evening, by going to the Vestry Hall, Chelsea. He found, 'on reading the circular again how I had erred'.

With fold-out map of North America, and numerous plans and diagrams laid down in text, as well as several full-page plates. In original blue buckram binding, with 'REPORT ON AMERICAN VISIT | 1946.' in gilt on the spine. Good, on lightly-aged and spotted paper.

A well-produced item, well-typed and with clear diagrams, bound in navy buckram with 'REPORT ON AMERICAN VISIT | 1954' on the spine. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The text is preceded by an Index, a map of North America, and an itinerary. The 'objects of the visit' are given on the first page as '(a) To obtain information on the current production practice in Woodpulp and Paperboard Mills.

2pp., 16mo. On bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. After presenting his respects, Lane states that he'regrets that he is so engaged for three or four months that he must not undertake any more - / He has found the copying miniatures so injurious to his eyes and the drawings so unsatisfactory in the printing that he is at all times unwilling to engage in very small Drawings -'. He concludes by thanking her for 'her most kind & gratifying note'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Fair, on aged and chipped paper. As 'Mails for India leave at the end of the week', he considers the letter to be more convenient for her to forward. What attracted his attention to 'Mrs. Dighton's advertisement was the mention of African Stamps which she wished to obtain in exchange for those of Travancore'. He describes his own interests: 'I am especially strong in African Stamps having much correspondence from the West Coast'. He lists sets he would be willing to send to Mrs Dighton 'in exchange for 3 or 4 full sets of Navancore'.

2pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed in a neat hand at head of second page. Binyon writes that he cannot be with her on the Friday, as he has to 'go down to Winchester on business. And I am so driven I don't know where to turn.' He has 'had Huxley's Barren Leaves in the house for days', but hasn't 'had one moment to look at it'. He has 'managed to read [J. R.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter concerns Goodrich's 'The Tribute Book: A Record of the Munificence, Self-sacrifice and Patriotism of the American People during the War for the Union' (1865). He is sending 'proofs of the pages Corson desires to see. 'The first few pages are printed & cannot be changed: in the others, anything vital can be corrected.'; He thinks Corson 'will find that I have fallen into none of the errors you are apprehensive of'. To do so would have been 'unpardonable', as Goodrich 'had full information from which to make my articles'.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He has Greenough's letter to hand, and has examined his 'Belcher memoranda, and find that my whole stock is invested in the Hist. of Camb.' He regrets that he is unable to assist Greenough in his enquiries. He closes 'With pleasant memories of your Grandfather, and with the Compliments of the season'. The engraved portrait of a bearded Paige in late middle-age, has beneath it a facsimile of his signature. It is in good condition, neatly presented and lightly attached to a paper mount.

Preface followed by list of 'Past Officers, Roster of Members, etc.', 'Chronology of The Old Book Table [1931-1970]' and 'Alphabetical List of Guests 1933-1970'. The loose leaves mainly consist of 'Extracts from the Minutes: 1931-1954'. The preface begins: 'Five members of the antiquarian booktrade in New York City met for a friendly dinner on the night of 9 January 1931. They were: Ernest R. Gee, a leading specialist in sporting and color plate books; E.

3 pp, 12mo. 41 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper with a couple of closed tears. He is sending 'the trans. of the Baghobahan together with the Original', and trusts that Robinson will keep his promise 'and not detain it long'. Considers it fair that Robinson's friend 'should pay the carriage thereof from & to London'. 'The younger Stewart is to send me up a book of mine in about a week - the best way will be to send the Bagh along with it as it will be the same expence'. Suggest sending another book with 'the Bagh to Haileybury', rather than to Portman Square.

4to, 1 p. Twenty lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper, with slight traces of mount on reverse. Having read Humberstone's article on the London School of Hygiene, he is 'sending it to the printers to be set up'. He commends the article for dealing with the subject 'in an interesting and useful way'. He rejects the five plans Humberstone has sent, as they would not 'reproduce satisfactorily', and a photograph which is 'too large to go across a page', and would like 'a photograph of the elevation of the School' and 'either a photograph or an electro of the design of the Seal'.

Both 4to, 1 p. Texts clear and complete. Both on aged and worn paper. Autograph Letter: He apologises for not acknowledging her letter ('I have been so busy and away a great deal') and regrets that he does not 'for the moment remember anything which would be of service to you'. Typed Letter: He regrets that 'the present is rather a bad time for what we call the free lance in literature'. He is not himself 'very much in Fleet Street and the neighbourhood', the 'bulk' of his work being done 'far from the madding crowd'.

Cheque, printed in blue. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Written out for ten pounds and signed 'Ella R. Christie'. With various stamps and perforations, not affecting Topelius's signature. Christie's translation from Topelius, 'Fairy Tales from Finland', was published by T. Fisher Unwin in 1896.

All texts clear and complete. All four items in fair condition on lightly-aged paper, with occasional light wear along folds. ITEM ONE: Autograph testimonial by 'F. G. Lucas | Brigr. General | late Comdr. 42nd. Infy. Brigade M.E.F.' Dated 26 April 1919. 12mo, 1 p. Text and images clear and complete. Publishing details, with price of '1/2d' printed upwards along inner margin of last page. On aged paper, with slight damage to the margin of the first leaf. This single issue scarce: no copy on COPAC. Chambers Miscellany was originally published between 1844 and 1847.

4to, 4 pp. Printed on thin paper. Text clear and complete. Originally a bifolium, but the pages had been separated and the margins trimmed. Repaired with archival paper. With a list of members of the 'Restoration Committee'. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copies on COPAC at King's College London and the Guildhall.

8vo: xii + 416 pp. Fair, tight copy, on lightly-aged paper, in worn contemporary brown leather binding with the school's arms in gilt on both boards, marbled endpapers. Inscribed on flyleaf: 'To my very dear Mother from her loving son Norman. August 10. 1909.' Loosely inserted are two newspaper cuttings, the first being a 30-line undated term report, and the second a Daily Telegraph obituary of the school's headmaster Sir John McClure.

12mo, 3 pp. Bifolium. Aged, and with fraying to extremities, causing minor loss to one word of text, and date of letter. Returning 'the volumes of Lowndes' Manual'. The firm has 'not yet been able to make use of your notes, as we received the volume too late for the new edition, which is moreover little more than a reprint of Mr. Bohn's with a few corrections'. They have, however, 'copied the notes, which will be useful when we bring out as we hope to do, a completely revised edition'. Apprarently signed, on behalf of the firm, with the initials 'PEB'.

4to, 1 p. Thirteen lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged and lightly-creased paper. The letterhead features an engraving of Chaucer with a lion and eagle. Stating that 'the Pilgrims Society has no funds available' to pay for the sending of 'a representative to the Conference that you are holding with the object of preserving the Old Cottages of England', although 'individual Pilgrims might be willing to subscribe' and the Society is 'in full sympathy with your object'.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed in pencil on reverse 'R. A. Bennett re T. P. O'Connor'. He is enclosing 'the promised note to "T. P". I see that he is ailing and going to the Riviera at an early date, so you had better try and catch him at once.' Bennett had to get the recipient's address from his publishers, as O'Connor left without passing it on.

The story on nine numbered 4to pages, with a covering page carrying the title: 'THE BATTLE OF THE WAVES FOR FREEDOM. | By Maxim Gorki.' On the rectos of ten 4to leaves, attached by a brass pin. Text clear and complete at 26 lines to the page. On worn, discoloured paper (watermarked 'CONQUEROR | LONDON'), with loss to extremities. Mrs Gill's purple oblong stamp in bottom left-hand corner of reverse of last leaf: 'Mrs.

Folio, 2 pp. 38 lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair, on browned high-acidity paper, with slight chipping to extremities and slight internal wear.To be folded into packet. Docketed 'Recd 22d. October 1855 | [initialed signature] | Doorga Churm Curr - | - v - | Ob Mullick | Letter from Mr Fisher -'. Difficult hand. He acknowledges to various documents relating to the case, as well as 'two Bank of Bengal notes', in a writ of Fieri Facias. Explains his requirements ('I must have one man with me to Gard [sic] my property').

12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. On aged paper, with a spike-hole with closed tear from hole to edge of both leaves. No loss to text. He is sending 'a list of the books that I wish to part with in order that upon the exchange for a Dyce's Shakspeare, one settlement of our account might suffice.' There follows a list of the books over around 40 lines, beginning with 'Tyndewood's Procinciale Fol. calf. neat. Best edition' and ending with 'Kennet's Impropriations 1 vol calf'. Includes 'Solomon & Perseda 1599'. The recipient has written '£6 .

12mo, 32 pp. In original yellow printed wraps, with engraving on front. Front wrap gives title as 'Guerilla [sic] Spy', with full title on p. 1. Unopened. Very good, with slight fraying to wrap and at foot of first leaf. American Civil War story, beginning in 1861. Back cover advertises 'Cheap New Edition of the London Library. In Penny Numbers, every Number a Complete Story, and every Number containing Thirty-two Pages of well-printed matter, in book size, folded into an Illustrated Wrapper.' Excessively scarce: no copy on COPAC or WorldCat.

Both items good, on lightly aged and creased paper, with both texts clear and complete. The Minstrels' Gallery referred to in the letter was held in the vicinity of Hamilton's estate Sandon Hall, Staffordshire. Written a few months before Hamilton's death in the celebrated duel with Lord Mohun. Bromley to Hamilton: Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, 1 p. 23 lines of text. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To his Grace Duke Hamilton in St. James's Square | London.', and docketed 'Mr: Bromley 7:th June 1712 about the Minstrill court & that Holden the Attorney had with drawen'.

In original buff wraps, with white printed label on front cover. Text clear and complete, but in poor condition: worn, dogeared and lightly-stained, with loss to margins.
